the guides are interesting, the vertical line is the center line going from the spine or center most between legs. The ground lines decide the stride/foot placement?

In this design it's merely just a way of grounding the creature but in some of the others it's more noticeable for keeping the anatomy in check as you point out. Breaking it down the center line, grounding the creature, helping to mirror the anatomy for symmetrical designs and just helping with the general point of view/perspective. I may add 2x2 lines to create a real grid, but this simple 2 line cross grid with a center vertical line serves its purpose.
