Description
Hi guys! As promised, here is a compilation of the different locations of the Island of Sodor, and how I will describe the way they look and how they are all connected. So for the first one, we definitely have to start off with none other than our own Main Line, but also the Ffarquhar Branch, tied into one, as there was no way I can separate the first half of the Ffarquhar Branch in it's own piece. So both the first half's of the Main Line & Thomas's Branch will be described in this first picture. And to make things easier, I will put different number marks on each location in order to talk more in depth about them, with the Main Line highlighted in red, and the Ffarquhar Branch in blue. I will talk about what each place looks like to, but I'll go more in depth in them in the individual layout maps. Oh, and another, this will contain spoilers for future seasons, so don't say I didn't warn you. So without further or do, let's start our journey on the Main Line, once again highlighted in red.Main Line:
1) Knapford Station-Oh yes, I had to start here now, didn't I, and rightfully so. Like in the TV Series, Knapford is the main terminus and headquarters of the Northwestern Railway, and where the Fat Controller's office is. It has the same look from the classic series, but I love the idea of the big signal gantry, switches and cross sections from S18 onwards. The way it faces from the front like normal going with the signal gantry and where platforms 3 & 4 would end at the bookstall, that would the entrance going down the main line along the coastal track (we'll get to the later). But all I can say is the obvious in that this is where Gordon starts with the express, but going down.
Knapford Sheds- Knapford Sheds from S7 is obviously here, and any engine can sleep there, but as of late since I'm introducing the characters from S6 & S7, you can bet this is where they sleep. It's the residence to Murdoch, Emily, Bear, Harvey, and later this is where Tamara will mainly reside. And occasionally any engine can hang our there, like Donald, Douglas, Arthur, Salty, etc. and this is where one of the carriage sheds would be to, especially Gordon's express coaches. There are 10 sidings in the sheds here to account for the vast variety of engines that live or stop to rest there. Visiting engines like Stepney, Wilbert, Flying Scotsman, and Spencer for example can reside here on occasion, whenever they visit Sodor. And like in the RWS Tidmouth sheds, there are special coal bunkers there were coal trucks would be shunted on an elevated ramp in a shed, and used to refill the steam engines.
2) Knapford Harbor and Shunting Yards-The idea of those two being here by the sea makes a lot of sense, especially for the harbor. But this is definitely where the railway's main shunting yards would be, and Vicarstown to, but we'll get to that later. Just like in the concept art, I imagine both Knapford's harbor and yards would be behind Knapford, as well as between Tidmouth itself. The Shunting Yards will have the same looks from S2, S3, S4 and the CGI series, but once I plan out the individual map for it, it'll make a lot better sense, as I love those versions of the yards best. As Knapford Harbor. I'm gonna go for it's S2 look like in the Trainz version, as I feel that design looks a lot better for it, and thus it would have the same closed off section from Percy Takes the Plunge where Percy went past the danger notice and feel into sea. It also has the same pier section Special Attraction in S4 where Percy's trucks broke loose and fell into Bulstrode. For now, Stanley is the main station pilot, but then later Jinty in S3, and the other shunters seen here would definitely be Rosie, Paxton, Diesel, just too name a few, but of course, being the main yards and harbor, any engine would be seen here. Oh, and like how the express leaves from Knapford, fish is also collected here and brought into vans, meaning this is where the Flying Kipper starts, mostly pulled by Henry.
3) Tidmouth Station-Tidmouth would be a main junction and starting point for Ffarquhar.. As for Main Line trains, well, local trains would stop here, as Knapford is the big station in my series, but the express doesn't start from there. In fact, because I have Gordon leaving the express down the coastal track, that means he doesn't stop at Tidmouth. But hey, he could alternate if there was a change in the schedule, it could happen. Tidmouth of course will have the same look it did from S2 & S3, so the yards there will remain unchanged, but its on the right of the line as you can see. The Branchline Sheds for any of the Ffarquhar engines, particularly Thomas, Percy, Toby, and later Emily would sleep here. But then again, and engine could rest there if they need a breather. Trains for the Little Western can stop here, but they would end their service at Knapford. Like I said back at Knapford, the shunting yards and harbor are shared by both Knapford and Tidmouth, so passengers would come across through that bridge in the yards from S2. This is also the main place to refuel the engines, like what I mentioned at Knapford Sheds, but honestly, every station on Sodor has a coal bunker, water tower and diesel fuel pump, as they gotta refuel somewhere when taking trains, right. Also, thanks to theUnluckyTug, I decided to create a main line section ascending from Tidmouth in a curve, which we will get to later. But I'll sum it up by saying that this finally puts the whole Knapford-Tidmouth controversary to rest for me, so halleluiah.
4) Tidmouth Sheds-The main roundhouse and home for the engines. The main line engines usually rest here, especially Gordon, Henry and James. But it is the main home for the original 6, Thomas, Edward, Henry, Gordon, James and Percy. Yeah, you here that Mattel, Edward & Henry, so stop being selfish and focus on what made the original series great. Other engines could also reside here to if need be, and Toby would even visit there soon to, but in the siding next to it like in the original series. Though I will say in future, I might add an extra berth, as I have been taking a liking to Emily, so soon she might be based here. I wasn't planning that, but since I plan for her and Thomas to hook up, I might change that very soon in the future. But on top of that, Tidmouth Sheds remains unchanged, mostly having the look from the classic models seasons, mostly S1-S4 of course. The carriage shed is located there to, and mainly where I decided can be the home for Annie, Clarabel and Henrietta, and not the carriage sheds at Elsbridge. Though they also can rest at Ffarquhar to if you may remember. But yeah.
5) The Three-Way Bridges-For any local trains going up the line from Tidmouth, this where I decided to place the really breath taking and creative Three-way Bridges from S3. I loved this set as a kid, and I still do today as I just had to add it into my series. The design of the bridge is the same from S3, and god, I just can't stop looking at it (Laughs). Now if you guys remember one of my recent episodes, Splatter & Dodge, you'd know that I already talked full in depth on these bridges. In fact, at the time I was writing Splatter & Dodge, I was multi-tasking and creating this map the same time I wrote the episode, which is what gave me the idea for how I described it. Both the Top and Bottom Bridges are special shortcut routes to Tidmouth Hault on the Little Western, when not taking the Castle Tunnel through there, as it would make sense to as most fans, myself included, associate these bridges with the Little Western. But after writing the episode, I figured it out;
-Top Bridge-The top bridge as you all can see goes over the main line and diverts onto the bend, so given that it goes to Elsbridge, you can say it's also a shortcut to Thomas's branchline to. In fact, in Elizabeth the Vintage Lorry, Duck traveled on the top bridge to get on to that line that goes to Elsbridge, and broke down a few miles later, where the old shed where Elizabeth was in was located.
-Middle Bridge-The Middle Bridge, also the viaduct is the main line, so engines from the main line can travel on that bridge with ease. Explaining why we see Gordon, Henry and James on that section. I imagine that's the section of main line the engines take, or any engine traveling on that section to get to Tidmouth itself.
-Bottom Line-The Bottom section by the canal is an entrance to get into to Tidmouth Hault if the engines took another section to get there if wanting to take a shortcut or if the lines at the Castle Tunnel were out of commission. But I could say it's mostly a goods line as UnluckyTug predicted.
6) This isn't really anything to major, but I just thought I could mention what is here. At that section as I mentioned, the old shed Elizabeth was stored in is around there, but past that right at that bend before Elsbridge Junction, this is where the large open field would be. It's the very same field that James crashed into on his first day, and where Thomas would rescue him with the Breakdown Train, and how he got his branchline. James's crash though happened on the other side of the field though, opposite of where I placed the number as I don't wanna change the direction of how the crash happened, so right where it says "Wide-Arched bridge", that's the spot James crashed in.
7) Coastal Route-So now we'll get back to the line descending from Knapford, which is the express's main route, along the coastal route. But don't worry, other trains would come along this line to, including goods trains. First the express would pass over the bridge of the Branchline Harbor on the Ffarquhar branch, but we'll get to that later. Then we go down along the sandy beaches of the Coastal Track that has the exact look it does from S3 onwards. But it has most of the S6 design onwards, especially since we see main line trains passing through there. Inconsistency, yes, but it did give me an idea of how said inconsistency from the show could work. It passes the lighthouse you see on the bottom here, along this coastal track. It was also this same area from Something in the Air where Henry ran over some tracks damaged by tides and plunged into the ocean. Now I know that the crash happened when Henry came in the opposite direction, but I didn't have a choice, so I retconned that by having Henry travel up the line, where he takes that big splash. Besides, it's a fan adaptation, so we can get away with whatever we want at this point
8) Coastal Tunnel-I thought a tunnel would be great here, and since I wanted to stick with RWS logic on that section, Henry's Tunnel is still outside Vicarstown as I think it makes sense there. However, the tunnel here is similar in design. I called it Coastal Tunnel because it is by the coast. But after I talked with GBA2000onDeviantArt in the comments right after I uploaded the map, he pointed out it could be Tidmouth Tunnel from the books, so yeah, I guess it could be, but with a name change. And thanks to that idea, it's at this tunnel where Henry came across that escaped circus elephant that would spray him full blast in the fact with water.
9) Elsbridge Junction-Now we come to the final part of the Main Line in this section, Elsbridge Junction as I like to call it. Elsbridge is one of my favorite locations, and I can understand why lots of people would disagree with it being the junction station for Thomas's line, but I feel it being here for the TV series could make sense, like in the middle perhaps. Hence why I drew the lines the way I did so they could connect. It's a dying shame we never saw this again after S4, as I love this layout. Everything about Elsbridge remains unchanged, it's got the same design and functions as it did from S1-4. It's the junction for Thomas's branch between the main line, or other trains from other lines, and where trucks would be stored in. Especially goods from the branchline itself, like stone from Anopha Quarry, milk, farm produce, etc., and other engines would make goods deliveries from there to, so you get the idea. The shunting yards and carriage sheds from S2 are also present, but Annie, Clarabel and Henrietta don't sleep here, simply because since I have either Thomas or Toby at either Tidmouth or Ffarquhar, then their coaches would be shunted in the carriage sheds at the same locations, because let's face it, would they really waste so much coal, time and speed to get there? But yes, Elsbridge is one of the most important locations in my series, especially because Thomas is the main character in it.
Ffarquhar Branch:
1) Now the terminus for the Ffarquhar Branch is gonna start at Tidmouth, as I'm beginning to think since the Branchline Sheds are located there, and where Thomas, Percy, and Toby reside at sometimes, I think it makes sense there. But one thing for certain, passenger services do stop at Knapford, but it doesn't terminate there. The line bends a bit like in S1 or in SI3D, where engines would switch onto the branchline itself. The Bus Depot is located in that section where the #1 is. The same bus depot where Bertie the Bus lives, and where Thomas first met Bertie, and started their famous race. Speaking of which, the line curves down, and as mentioned before, the level crossings are represented by these black X marks, so this is the crossing that Thomas first past Bertie.
2) Valley Bridge-Same bridge from S3 in episodes like Thomas Gets Bumped, Thomas, Percy and Dragon, Time for Trouble, etc., would be placed. I wish I added this bridge before, but thankfully, especially after looking at the Unlucky Tug's map, now I know. It can be above the goods line to the branchline harbor, which we'll get to later.
3) Dryaw Airfield-Next up is Dryaw, the Airfield Station, and not much has changed, though a road on the opposite of the rails would be there, but the airfield itself is still present. The main home for Harold the Helicopter as well, though being a patrol helicopter, of course he has other helipads in different locations.
4) Lead Mines-The lead mines I thought could go here. I was gonna place it on the goods line, but I had no room, so I thought placing them in the middle of the branch would be a good idea. It's the same place Thomas foolishly past a danger notice and fell through an old mine. The hole Thomas created is still there, but the mine is still active. But I might close it someday, who knows. Another reason for placing it there, is because the section of Thomas's branch in the picture is the only area where main line engines like Gordon can travel through without any harm. So how could Gordon be able to get there to save Thomas, right?
5) Goods Station-Another change from the old map I wanted to amend. I disagree with theUnluckyTug, as that station with a single track I believe is Toryreck, but we'll get to that later. This goods station however from Thomas gets Bumped would be placed here, and it can be separate, but it's in the town of Toryreck. Like mentioned before, it's a station only for freight, not passengers, except for that one emergency in Thomas Gets Bumped. My design of the goods station however is different. It has the same look it did from S3, but it also extends away from the bridge with a special dairy platform we see in the newer series. I think combining those two would make sense, as there would even be sidings at the back and a hosepipe for milk. It was also at this station where Wilbert accidentally took on milk and was "foaming from the funnel", so to speak. I'll go more in depth on this place in my sperate layout picture for it. I also decided that since it's the goods station, that a line separate from the branch would be here. In fact, away from the goods station going down that line is Crowe's Farm Crossing where Percy crashed into a cart of lime that he used to play a trick on Thomas later on. This line headed down the goods line, which we'll go more in depth on first.
6) Before Crowe's Farm Crossing is the Windmill and forest from Ghost Train that Percy travels down. And through the valley from S2 that you remember in Woolly Bear. I think that spot would've been perfect for a valley, hence why that bridge I mentioned in 2 is right there. Of course, being a goods line, Percy, Toby, and Mavis would usually use this line. But occasionally Thomas or Daisy can to.
7) Branchline Harbor-Now here's the Branchline Harbor as I call it. an extension of Knapford Harbor, but for the Branchline, hence why I gave it that specific name. This was the harbor that would be reopened by Sir Charles Topham Hatt II, and were Percy would help with the construction along with Thomas & Toby once he became part of the branch, and where later Trevor would help in Thomas & Trevor. The line would continue from under the Valley Bridge, past one of Harold's helipads, under the bridge of the Main Line that goes down the coastal track, then to the branchline harbor. This could be the same spot from Something in the Air where Thomas is collecting fish for Henry, only after his, ahem, unfortunate accident. The harbor has the same look from S2, and it's so weird some locations were just one-offs for only a certain season, I mean like, come on. I don't care about the budget, but I'm sure they could've used it again. Now one thing I will admit that's confusing, if this is a goods only line, how come passenger trains come here? I mean to carry the workmen or take people to the seaside here I guess. Oh, and it's also where Bulstrode now resides after he was terrorized by the Seaside Spectre. There is also a line along the coast that extends from this harbor to the main harbors and yards back at Knapford Station. And I imagine that seaside village from S4, in Special Attraction could be present here so it's not some generic coastal track. It is a goods shortcut though
8) Toryreck Station-Last is Toryreck, and wow, it's funny how I evened out both site of both lines to 9, which the last spot would be Elsbridge, and I didn't plan that. Before Toryreck and right after the goods station at that bend, is that area with the signal and siding we see Thomas run past in S1. The one where the double track ends, but more will continue down the branchline itself. Toryreck will have its regular looks that most of us fans would consider when we think of Toryreck. A single tracked, small station with a passing loop for oncoming trains, and a small shed there. This shed is private area for Daisy, as well as the Ffarquhar Sheds. I decided being the self-obsessed diva we know and love, she would want her privacy for her beauty sleep. Oh Daisy, the things a dame does to achieve her own needs and wants. So now passengers trains can stop here regularly, and as for what Hackenback would look like, I'll talk about that later. But one thing I will get out of the way though is that in Train Stops Play, Stepney collects his trucks from Knapford Harbor, and instead of going to Toryreck, goes to Ffarquhar. But after Toryreck, we go under the Wide-Arched bridge from S1, that's the same road bridge that Bertie travelled on when he was beating Thomas at first in the race.
So that pretty much sums everything up. It was hard, but a lot of fun to explain how things in my head canon work. So far, I'm quite proud of it, especially since this was the challenging one to kill two birds with one stone. But one thing I should mention is that this is indeed the 1st loop line for the main line. Okay, technically three as we'll see later on, but this is one big loop, with an outer loop, highlighted in red, and the inner highlighted in blue for Thomas's branchline, as that's the only section of the Ffarquhar branch main line trains can go on without any trouble, but it's also where Gordon got switched on by mistake in James & the Coaches. And both loops terminate at Elsbridge, so that's pretty convenient, eh? But proud of it. I hope you all enjoyed this, and please feel free to leave any comments or ask any questions about my head canon. Take care guys!
