Description so i made this in zbrush after watching a ndo2 video on youtube. im intruiged by ndo2 and may buy it sometime. i wanted to see if i could use some very simple techniques in z-brush to work up something as fast as ndo2.

heres how it went
i made a polymesh plane in zb then subdivided it 5 times
i pulled up and down some masked areas in z
i used an out of the box curve insert brush to do some tubes and adjusted them. i turned on transform mirror x and they tiled across the edge of my plane. that was a nice surprise.
i used another out of the box mesh insert brush to do some bolts. turned of curve mode and just placed them where i wanted them
then i spearated the plane object from the rest by polygroup and subtool extract
framed my plane object up to the 2048 canvas then unhid my pipes
rendered on best with ao and grabbed the doc from the texture menu
dropped the model to the canvas
then applied the normal material with a white color using the simple brush to the model that was dropped to the canvas
went to the texture menu and grabbed the doc again
exported the maps to ps
in ps offset the doc by 1024x
selected the border artifact and some pixles on the side
filled using the menu fill option and used the drop down for content aware.
did some touch up and finito!!!!!!!!!!

simple believe it or not it only took about 10min maybe 20

obviously way more can be done to finish. but this shows you can get something out pretty fast once you know some zb stuff.

Well, I'll give Mudbox a whirl and see. Overall, I thank you Mike for being so accessible and open with your responses. I have actually learned some good things just from these exchanges and looking at your work.

thanks- thomas

very nice, just what I was intending to look for, for inspiration... I have Zbrush with my Autodesk Suite but it will not work in WinXP as everything else does so all I can do is dream of using it.

maybe you can use it when you upgrade. mudbox is good too. the thing is it really doesn't matter what you use. good results come from good research and reference and a clear idea of what you want to get out of whatever your doing. hell you can paint normal details inside a 16bit greyscale image and use crazy bump to convert it. sometimes i think that is just as effective as all this hi tech bs we use these days
