what do you use as reference? Or are al your facial expressions and such improvised?
you have an amazing knowledge of the human figure...

For these photo-realistic projects, I cast the roles with models I hire to keep the faces and acting consistent.

Hey Mike, i find your work a true inspiration especially that i'm into realism.
Altought, i find myself stuck in a predicament. Now, it's obvious that you are working traditionally, so phototracing is out of the question, what do you suggest for someone who cant quite acheive uncanny likelness like you?
Does is take too much work?
Is there a way to learn how to do this without looking for refs to each panel?
What is your method, basically?
Thanks.

my method is that I do cartoony drawings to layout my pages or covers, then shoot pictures of models that I hire based on those drawings, and then composite the pics, often 3d assets I've generated, and then trace that on a lightbox onto paper. This is what I do for B&W art and painted art.

This is excellent! The layout is top notch and the pencil work is delicious.
Bottom left panel is a knock out = would make a great poster.
The late great John Buscema drew some amazing women, his Shalla Bal from the Silver Surfer series is a knock out - but this is up there with that work.
The expressions you're catching are absolutely superb.
Reminds me of the Mary Jane piece you did for the Judith O'Brian Mary Jane book - but this is even more subtle. Ace stuff.
Do you use photo-reference for any of your close up work? I can't tell cos this is so naturally rendered.

These pages look , Mike. What I especially like about this approach is the use of positive and negative space and the balance of light washes... You get all the emotive character and appeal of your more fully-rendered technique, but with greater efficacy.
