Description
A client of mine wanted modernised representations of classic Indian Gods. This one is Kali.Painting from scratch in Photoshop. Reference was taken for the clothing, jewellery and weaponry.
Approx 10-12 hours to paint.

My question to the SO CALLED MODERN artist community...?
hello sir.
their is something about the art i would like to say . The artist are just trying to show the image off maa kali who is preserver of innocent (or destroyer of evil its your choice of what to use)in her fierce rage but what i want to say is you missed one thing .
the artist mixed "pauranik maa kali" (from durga shapshati written in 7 century BCE) with "trinatri maa kali " (from ling puran the 6th puran in all puran) .
their are 4 different avatars of maa kali
which differ in physical appearance and iconography . the artist mixed the two of them here .
1.) The "Pauranik Maa kali " ( the name is given in kalika puran "section kali ka arth tatva") who appeared from the forehead of maa durga . her physical form as described in "durga shaptashati and devi bhagwatam" states that "SHE IS WEARING A SARI OF CHEETA SKIN", has a schackel in her hand as weapon, her tongue is looling out she has sunken eyes , and very long hair covering all around her ad she is wearing a garland of human heads (51 to be exact) . (THE ARTIST used "the sachakle" and her looling "red tongue" and long hair ) THIS AVATAR OF MAA ADI-KALI STANDS FOR AS A "PRESERVER OF INNOCENT"
and 2.) the "Trinatra maa kali " (section LING PURAN SECTION -"shiva tandava vernan") this is who appeared form the third eye of bhagwan shiva , she is a spiritual part of maa parvati who just jot mixed with the "karal vish" present in shivas throat and emerged out from lord shivas third eye . SHE has two hands has Three Eyes on her forehead like bhagwan shiva., SHE IS WEARING A DEVINE DRESS, has a trishul in her hand , a crown of chandrama (moon just like lord shiva) and she has a sign of karal vish on her neck .and is wearing all different kinds of jewelry. her tongue is NOT LOLLING OUT NETHER SHE is wearing the garland of human skulls . she is dressed as a goddesses. (THE ARTIST used "the third eye" from here and "the trishul" and the chandrama crown) (AND THIS IS WHY IT IS SAID THAT MAA KALI IS THE AVTAR OF MAA PARVATI AND MAA DURGA. YOU ARE REFERRING TWO ENTIRELY DIFFERENT EVENTS HERE. )
Well this avtar of maa kali was requested to end demon daruk . but it is said in purans that all the world feared her seeing her rage after she ended demon daruk . and they asked bhagwan shiva to calm her down. bhagwan shiva knew that the fear of gods is just misplaced and to show that maa kali can never harm any innocent one he transformed into a helpless baby (this is called as "batuk avtar") and started crying while lying on ground . as soon as maa kali herd a cry of an innocent child she immediately find the child and start nurturing her out of motherly love. So THIS AVATAR OF MAA KALI STANDS FOR MOTHERLY INSTINCT. and this is how bhagwan shiva clearly showed the gods that maa kali "CARED" more for that helpless child than she cared for destroying demons.
AND FOR THE RECORD THE COMMON FORM WHERE SHIVA LYING BELOW HER FEET - THEIR ALSO SHIVA KNEW THAT THE FEAR OF GODS IS POINTLESS THATS WHY HE DID'NT STOP HER JUST LIED OF THE GROUND "PRESENTING HIMSELF AS A " LINE" BETWEEN PRESERVING INNOCENT & DESTROYING EVIL" - MAA KALI "NEVER, NEVER" CROSSED THAT LINE . BECAUSE SHE KNEW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRESERVING INNOCENT & DESTROYING EVIL... SHE IS OUR PROTECTOR .
NOW I STATE FOR THE IDEA OF "THIRST FOR BLOOD". DEAR ALL REMEMBER MAA KALI AND MAA DUGA WERE FIGHTING DEMONS LONG BEFORE THE ARRIVAL OF "DEMON RAKTBEEJ " AND AS IT PROVED HARD FOR MAA DURGA TO KILL RAKTBEEJ SHE ASKED THE HELP OF MAA KALI AND ON HER ORDERS (MAA DURGA IS THE GENERAL OF THE ARMY) TO CONTAIN ALL THE BLOOD OF RAKTBEEJ IN HER MOUTH. USING HER TONGUE AS WEAPON (LIKE THE NAILS OF BHAGWAN NARSINGH" OR THE THIRD EYE OF SHIVA) AND FOLLOWING ORDERS OF MAA DURGA SHE STOPPED RAKTBEEJ RE-ORIGINATION, AND SO MAA DURGA KILLED RAKTBEEJ (REF - DURGA SAPTASHATI CHAPTER 4 SECTION 8 - "RAKTBEEJ WADH" )
AND you Also missed the concept that she is the mother of all creation . all motherhood feeling comes from her.
EVERY MOTHER IN THE WORLD IS AN INCARNATION OF HER. EVERY MOTHER SHE STANDS FOR HER AND IN EVERY MOTHER SHE STANDS WITH US .

may be you feel that what i have stated is just same or may be people who try to justify them self may say that i m a narrow minded person. but I feel it is "Art which gives form to imagination". and is the best possible way to spread knowledge and teachings . but if you draw wrong art you are spreading incorrect information and teachings to the world.
plus I JUST WANT THAT OTHER PEOPLE SHOULD GIVE THE SAME RESPECT TO MAA KALI WHICH WE ALWAYS GIVE HER AS A MOTHER, MY MOTHER. IS IT SO WRONG TO ASK ? .But this is not possible if people who know who is maa kali doesn't describe her correctly. ( I AM NOT SPECIFYING THIS PARTICULAR ART ONLY)

2.) WHY ARE THEY DESCRIBING HER THE WAY THEY SEEM FIT AND CALL IT MODERNIZATION. they all are creative they can draw any thing what they want so why are they so obsessed with the destruction of evil idea , or about the sexuality or nudity idea . ???????????
3.) i find people blaming society about the ill it has and stating that they are only responsible about the art? but why their art is to bannerize the evil ? why not draw the idea which will prevent evil FROM BEING promoted ?
4.) and why not to understand art as a form of message they are spreading in this world.? why cant you relate the mother of all creation "maa kali" with the mother we all have AT OUR HOMES ?

brother , i gave the information because peapole are misleaded in the appearence of maa kali . and stated how maa kali is actually described in major puran's . i ment the conncept of mordinization as some clint asked , i think is not cool. I tried to say that maa kali stands for preservation of innocent , not for distruction of evil. so why great artist are not drawing the form of a mother, is the image you see can you see any motherhood emotions. plus the physical form ideology is all wrong , more over i stated clearly that by the orders of maa durga maa kali contained all the blood of raktbeej.
art is the oldest form of providing information(since indus times) and drawing wrong art will prove disaster. see for your own self many images posted by many creators who dont know any think about maa kali and are describing all wrong about her . thats why i in detail described her appearence so that people should know what is the real difference between what are they seeing and is the real physical appearence. (i gave full reference for that you are free to check .) may be some people of morden society may think that is the real biggy if some one tried to mordinize maa kali. i would say , WHY ARE NOT THEY SHOWING A MOTHER? (ok i know you are not clear on names thats why i stated the correct names ) next the story you are refering to is from shiva puran (shiva sect). i understand the reason for this confusion , i can explain it to you . in shiva puran their is a section called "UMA SAMHITA" now this is 10 section of puran - this section is famous for "shumbh nishumbh, raktbeej wadh like details" . but the story you MAYBE reffereing is when "shiva somewat teased her (on the request of brahma) by saying "tum to kali ho"? (you are black in colour) on which maa parvati decided that she will loose this dark complection and will again turn to "gauri" . (this section is written in "VAAYVEE SAMHITA" (SECTION 12 OF SHIVA PURAN) now further she loosed her dark form and that dark took a form who is called as "MAA KAUSHAKI" NOTE - IT IS STATED IN THE SAME SECTION THAT SHE HAS THREE DIFFERENT FORMS "SOMYA , GHOOR, MISHRIT " NOTE IT IS INTRESTING THAT IN WIKIPEDIA , THIS GHOOR FORM IS MISSUINDERSTOOD , WIKIPEDIA STATES THAT - AND ENRAGED KAUSHIKI IS "KALI" " IT IS TO INFORM THAT ALL THREE ARE THE STATE OF MIND OF MAA KAUSHAKI THATS WHY THREE 1.)
