I read somewhere that she was a tribute to an old comic called Pogo from the 50's.

I read two different reasons she was changed to a cat. One was to avoid a lawsuit from the Kelly Estate. The other was because Marvel thought the idea of a humanoid skunk was gross. They didn't want a character that could maybe spray musk from her bottom.

The new look is just poor design! And with her original design being that of an Alien with skunk like markings and not an actual skunk ; I think the only thing she might spray at her enemies is a few laser blast. heh heh
