Description Hey! This was a shitload of fun to make

I was thinking about how creepy it would be if in the future, people start neglecting their real bodies to exclusively live in downloaded indistinguishably real simulations. There would be all kinds of interesting philosophical debates to have, and loads of conflicting opinions on the technology. It's an idea I might explore more, especially if people dig it.

Hope you like, please let me know what you think!

Im personally glad to see this idea revisited. techies, trekkies, matriculates (matrix fans) and so many more have pondered this. I would recommend a book for u. its called "The Last Book in The Universe" i believe. its post apoc and touches on this matter some.

I remember Spicey City (an HBO cartoon) did an episode like this, and of course the movies Gamer and Surrogates kinda have similar ideas too. There was a really neat short film I saw recently about people having apps in their eyes and being able to do everything we do right now with phones simply by blinking... which is kinda what they did on Futurama with eye-phones ^.^; I still think it's a whole neat genre that needs to be explored more. Love the painting, congrats on the DD

there's actually a movie on this, people replace themselves with robot's instead of going out themselfs, it's called β€œSurrogates”

I fear this is becoming the case already with some today. I personally use to play SL (while 3D and virtual it's not quite....realistic) and forgo a lot of important sleep and eating. Thankfully I got out of it and now have friends I can personally hang out with and visit. However there are still a handful of people I know that are incredibly obsessed with that virtual world over ours.

Brilliant one. The execution is masterful
And the idea - well, it could happen in really near future. More, people now - maybe not in that extreme way - but also live in 'simulated' virtual world: internet. Some of them barely even talk or go out.

Sorry for my english

This piece left me speechless. Not only the beautiful composition, but also the story in the picture itself. To me, I see a man who perhaps lost someone he loved or is using the technology to experience with the love he wanted to be with. The fact that it's clear on the other side this substation is causing him to neglect himself.. you've touched on an amazingly intriguing idea and a debate for technology of the future.
It's just amazing. The way it's done, the colours, the lucidity of the dream and how contrast it is to the neglected physical body which looks like the dreams are seeping towards.. incredible.
I adore this piece.

But it's a bit sad to live totally in your own mind believe me I've done it and I tend to forget there is a real world out there.

And hence why we should not forget about reality and indulge too much in these individual pleasures. I'm not saying that it is 'bad' to please oneself – of course one needs to keep oneself entertained before the symptoms of withdrawal start to appear – it's just a matter of controlling those desires to an extent that it does not bring harm upon oneself. I had almost fell for this trap once, and once was enough for me to realise the importance of this crappy modern society and not make myself look even crappier than others, which soon leads to the importance of one's own identity within a society. But I digress.

More can be said regarding this illustration of a very common 'wish' amongst the population, but I shall end my meaningless opinion regarding it here and just say that you – the artist – have done yourself a really impressive job on this picture and the Daily Deviation. Cheers, lad~

looking at our way of using of the internet, i come to think we are not too far away from that already...
yes, i do find it creepy sometimes...
when i look at my stepson (17 at that time, now he lives on his own) - he was good at school, he drove around with his bike all day, he went swimming, he played handball (and he was really good at that) - a fit guy...
then he discovered chatting via internet... from that time he wouldn't move anymore - windows and curtains closed day and night, at least six ashtrays in his room, heaped with cig butts, internet on, two mobiles on, tv on, music (hip hop) on... meals not before midnight... puh...
i couldn't get him out there...

a cool work you delivered here... bravo...
congrats on your DD...

Reminds me of Vanilla Sky and sollipsism from Orwell's 1984. I'd rather sleep alone lonely than living in an illusion. Yeah, great topic to discuss and great manifestation in this work.

Me too, partially inspired by 1984, as well as Brave New World. I partially buy into the idea that our suffering is an important part of giving our lives meaning and substance. Indulging in instant pleasures too much leaves me feeling a little empty.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

juditithil In reply to Miles-Johnston [2012-10-22 19:33:09 +0000 UTC]

I know both novels and yeah. I agree, I think suffering is a natural and necessary part of our lives besides joy. My experience is that the more effort I put into something, the more valuable the outcome is. It goes vice versa, too, just like what you say.

A part of a song comes to my mind: "He drops your dreams onto your eyes from a pipette, oh what an intoxication..." (Talking about the devil.)
I think rejecting reality in the long term is always harmful because it deprives us from the essence of life.

Slavery is freedom!

Freedom is slavery!

you are litterly speaking the worst doublethink from the 1984 novel itself. you are litterly wanting suffering and thinking it is good.

you are either mentally retarded or one of the most useless idiots only useful for 1984 opressive inhuman police system that is being put in Place by the establishment already. its unnatural and unecessary. you dont need pain and suffering to experience joy and happyness.Β  happyeness that is constant is good, even if there less euphoric dopamin and more is needed, it never reaches a certain amount where you cant feel a thing of happyness and need some pain. thats incredible stupid and illogical evolutionary biology. there is merely the absence of happyness, neutrality, not boredom just neutrality. then there is suffering. the middle part is not either neccesary, but that again is our normal standard of behavior, then happyness is a healthy natural and neccesary biological and psychological Life.
