Description
Eh...my Quarter Project for my advanced drawing class. It's a photo, but you get the general idea. It's a surreal portrait of one of my literary idols. Edgar Allan Poe. Done entirely in black/white Charcoal on 24"x18" paper.
As always, brutal honesty is appreciated.

Hi!
Sorry for this cut and paste comment! I featured this awesome deviation of yours in my news article βA Tribute to Edgar Allan Poeβ. I hope you donβt mind the feature. If you prefer not to be featured in this article, tell me please and I will do my best to get your deviation removed from it. You can find the news article here: [link] I chose this drawing, because I like the surrealistic touch you gave Poe and especially the way you drew the ravens. I love the movement in this drawing.

I have no problem with that at all, on the contrary I'm flattered and pleased that you selected my work along with such talented artists. I appreciate your interest, and the comment, thanks.

Interesting, but it looks like something from a Monty Python sketch--Poe with a black eye? A raven slapping him in the face? It looks like a parody of him. (Even though I never really liked him all too much.) I'd remove the black eye and change his and the raven's expressions, that could've made it perfect.

Eh, most of it was supposed to be an ode to him. I'm just not very good at illustrating it. Example being his "black eye" was intended to be an eye of a raven, just illustrating he and his work was one.
But I do appreciate the criticism, thank you for the feedback.

Mr Poe Has some amazing literature, and your picture captures the kind of feel his writing gives to the reader, simply amazing!

Alright, time for a pseudo "advance critique" First of all, I must say you really did well catching his head and face essence, perhaps the only thing I would change a bit would be that his jaw is a bit more prominent, yet, he does seem to have a way bigger forehead. His right eye gives a lot of expression and all the markings in his skin as well as the eyebrows look great.
Anyway, about the concept and title, it's fun, that even most of the non-readers can hear a squeaky voice saying "Nevermore!" and know it's a quote from Allan Poe. I think we all tend to associate him subconsciously with the attributes and darkness that surrounds ravens; and nonetheless, he is a master transmitting the precision and sharp intellect of the most morbid psychopaths, he was one of the few able to understand and write about the most angsty, morbid feelings, those feeling that some evoke when hearing or watching a raven looking into their eyes, even flying close to them.
His left eye, I don't know if it was associated with one of his writings? But it gives me the impression that it symbolises the facility he had to watch the world from another, perhaps sick and morbid point of view.
Finally, the strong shading works perfectly with the mood and concept, maybe this is just, as you say "a crappy" photo from the original, but everybody can recognise when somebody does a magnificent work, even when they can see the original work.
Kudos!

Hmm...well first off, in my defense....it was supposed to be a surreal caricature. He was supposed to look exaggerated, so his narrow shoulders, wide forehead and all that were just me playing with the photo I was using. I could have gone strictly realistic, but what fun is that? I do thank you for your thorough critique. It's delightful to read another's take on something you spent a good 10-15 hours drawing (though most of that was me staring at it not knowing what to do with it...that and drawing with charcoal and avoiding smudging it all....patience indeed).....
Thanks for the fave, and thanks again for the thorough review.

Hehe, that's why I didn't mentioned the narrow shoulders, wide forehead and such, I know it's a surrealistic work and it all looks great, but, I was simply mentioning his jaw is kind of prominent >.o.
It was my pleasure, and yes, the hardest work to do is finding a good concept to portray!
