Description =nevergetfooledagain showed me a great 3d coloring algorithm... She used it on her deviation [link]

This is my take on it. Thank so much, as this piece would never have come about without it.

As one of my favorite artists is MC Escher.. I wanted this to mimic the look as much as the geometry... hope I came close.

As always, all done in Ultrafractal.. no post work except text and border. Enjoy!

Like the twighlight zone.. this fractal was designed to make you think. Mostly it's because of the weird geometry.. but I like to think I monopolized on it a teensy bit and added to the effect. I am glad you like it.

You've got to tell me what coloring formula you used for this! Wonderful and unusual fractal.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

milleniumsentry In reply to LaPurr [2007-04-26 20:18:19 +0000 UTC]

That was my reaction when I first saw the coloring algorithm last friday! I loved it.. actually have been playing with it all week nevergetfooledagain was kind enough to share how she did the deviation I saw it in. (link above) Moosecall used it as well in a cool MC Escher-ish fractal I have in my fav's.. but I never got around to asking her how she did it.. really should have. Long story short story; Check out the 3d backdrops in the .jos coloring folder. There are like 25 variations... it's quite amazing. It is used best on a plain pixel formula (I think I remember you taking JP's classes though, so you know all 'bout that)

You can get straight lines and isolate the coloring just outside of the bail on a julia as well.

If you get bored.. let me know.. found some really cool ways to monoplize on the form while making something different. I will post something soon that utilizes the technique.

LaPurr In reply to milleniumsentry [2007-04-26 20:33:57 +0000 UTC]

Ah, thanks! I've played in that formula but never got anything like this. Those brick archways and stairs are wonderful! Very cool image!

LaPurr In reply to milleniumsentry [2007-04-27 06:51:17 +0000 UTC]

I've been playing around in that formula and can't figure out how you did the bricks. There's really nothing in there that would make them that perfect and also follow the lines of the arches and walls. I don't want to make this image, I'm just curious...really curious.

=littledeviltoo made me a wonderful journal, didn't she?

milleniumsentry In reply to LaPurr [2007-04-27 15:20:22 +0000 UTC]

*big grin*

That took some old fashioned cheating. With 3d backdrops.. each side can be assigned a color in the gradient... naturally, this means you can isolate each side for use as a mask. I then made a simple line gradient (gradient coloring algorithm)with one section getting darker (the line cutting into the brick) and the rest with opacity 0. This gives banding or lines if you turn up the color density. Turn up the density until it matches the size of the lines you want. Turning this layer 60 degrees and 300 degress (location, mapping rotiation) respectively will line it up with the hex pattern that the arches are comprised of and give you the squares for each side.... the walking surface for instance, would only have a 60degree and a 270 degree over it, the walls each would have one of the angled and the up and down banding.

The same effect was used on the stairs...

When you use a grid over FBM... it tends to make them look like colored tiles... which is all I did to give the bricks individual detail...

Hope this helps!
Cheers!

*and don't be curious unless you have a LOT of lives left. we all know where that goes! lol*

LaPurr In reply to milleniumsentry [2007-04-27 18:03:33 +0000 UTC]

Ah...I knew it had to be something like that. Thanks! Masking isn't cheating, it's one of the very cool tools available in UF. I really respect the time and the thought that went into this image. Great work!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

milleniumsentry In reply to LaPurr [2007-04-28 03:46:07 +0000 UTC]

Not a problem. And I totally agree.. the lack of masking in other programs pretty much keeps me from using them... and thank you very much for the compliment.. I feel much the same about a lot of your work.

You are one of the few artists I have met not confined to a particular style.

I read the entirety of tessalations.org.. great site. I didn't know about some of the weirder ones.

UF actually has tessalations... I have used it once.. in winkin, blinkin and nod (under the central glowing ball) but haven't really got my hands dirty as it was very hard to work with.
