Thank you for the tutorial, it's always nice to see how others work.
But I don't know if I would say that using filters is a way of cheating. From my point of you, filters are there to help you just like any other tool available in any digital medium. As an artist, you make the best with what you've got, so it think filters do indeed give a helping hand and at the same time, do not exclude the work you've done before hand. Some artists are able to use colours and achieve contrast without using filters, but I guess one achieves that level after years of experience (or is simply born with an innate talent ).
Also, digital and traditional are different in terms of workflow, at least in my experience so far. They are comparable only up to a certain point, but I don't think any less about one or another. They both put the creative mind and artistic skills to the test
Sorry for the rant and please excuse my English, it's not my first language.

I totally agree with you. It's this little argument I've had with my friend for quite a while now. It depends on how you look at things right? People who do traditional a lot may think that filters are kind of like.. quick and dirty shortcut, while digital artists love it. I absolutely love filters! Don't get me wrong, but I wish I can achieve good colors without using filters I hope you weren't offended or anything.....

Oh no, not at all!!
And yes, you are right, it does depend on one's point of view, and I understand what you mean.
I'm sure you will get better, all it takes is exercise. I try to use filters less too these days, so I can challenge myself into getting the right colours I want from the beginning(but I still use them sometimes for better contrast, etc )
I can suggest you find a good photograph and where you find an atmosphere that you like, or colours, you can use it as inspiration. Colour pick from it and while painting, adjust your colour to be more saturated and start painting. It was a fun way for me to learn and eventually I got courage to colour on my own. Hope this helps!

Usually don't read tutorials or comment ( not a huge DAer), but I actually liked reading this. Makes me want SAI. Thanks.

I don't know why, but I have less confidence about doing art with that much detail

it's actually not that detailed. it looks detailed, but it's actually very simple. you just have to brush with the flow of the hair
