Description Interestingly enough, it was this armor design for a Paladin NPC for my D&D campaign which lead to the the Anduris campaign world I created having "Divine Engines" powering the world. I decided to borrow heavily from Games Workshop's "Sisters of Battle" Warhammer 40K character designs and that lead me to want Tech Priests and from there I though of using the movie Dark City as inspiration for how the world exists.

I'm planning on adding this character as a Defender to the party. She'll be around because the old priest of Whitefield (the heroes' hometown) was killed by goblins and their sister city, Brannen, agreed to send somebody to take over his duties and picked a young Ordo Sororita Paladin since most of their Ordo Fraternis Paladins have joined the Emperor in expelling the goblin hordes and the regular priests are less willing to replace a more experienced priest who just bought the farm doing what they would be asked to do (defend Whitefield's Divine Engine). She'll probably come off as more of a "stick in the mud" cadet type but over time we'll see how she develops.

FYI, the six geared wheel is the good holy symbol of this world.

Wow, awesome outfit design. Greatest paladin I have ever seen.
She is macefighter, ha? Personally I dont like hammer as a weapon.

Thanks. I've kinda gone back and fourth on what weapon she should use. Longsword, warhammer, and maul have all been in the running. Personally I like batons and hookswords though I could probably go for a medium shield and sword also.

You like exotic weapons, eh?
I love spears and their variations.

A round shield and a mace looks cool together.

Spears are pretty cool, they just rarely are that good in game mechanics but they are still great weapons.

That they do.

Unfortunately you are right. In games, spear fighting animations are mostly awful. This makes me sad, I cannot play with my favorite weapon, bad animations do disturb.

The exception is Dynasty Warriors. Spears may not be great dueling weapons in DW but a fast character with a spear can cut through enemy soldiers like a hot knife through butter.

In the western tradition spears are static defensive weapons. They were primarily used in large coordinated formations (i.e. the Phalanx) to receive charges from infantry or cavalry. In the far east they were often more flexible weapons used in a manner more like a bo staff (i.e. as an impact rather than a thrusting weapon). This is why in Kung-fu spears are goon killing weapons and occasionally dueling weapons but they are regimental weapons in western applications.

F-ing cool character, dude. Great design.

I'm also digging the background, I like what you did with your map and the lighting of it.

Thanks.

It started with the Fighter WP. I had the burst in the background but no map. As I was submitting it I though it needed more in the BG and so I added the map. I liked it enough I decided to use colors from the paladin pic and make sort of a halo of light on hers and it worked out better than I thought it would.

Thanks. Honestly, I don't see how people can make characters without at least some back story. What I have yet to figure out is what in the history of this character makes her not want to take the lead. She can't be supremely self-confident and let another character lead. Maybe she protected another sacred artifact and in doing so failed to protect the lives of her underlings. This way she would have a reputation for successfully protecting relics (so they can recommend her to Whitefield) but they have a reason not to keep her and she has reason to be afraid of taking charge (perhaps she chooses to keep it her dirty little secret). A healthy dose of shame and self recrimination would give her some good grounds for doubting her ability to command and prevent her from stepping forward to do so (so the party Warlord can fill that role).

Wow, true, having a colorful or at least believable background is absolutely necessary.

Sure. It need not be dramatic or traumatic but it has to explain their behavior. It either has to be consistent with their personality/upbringing or it has to be explicable by some circumstances of their history.

I agree. No story is like an empty character. And this fear of hers is typical though I never would have thought it could be applied to a Paladin as well. It's interesting since the Paladins are supposed to be brave leaders and guardians of Light with no doubts in their cause. Traumatized Paladin makes an interesting character.

Paladins may have a reputation for fearlessness but you know they must have fears just like anybody else. Fear of failure probably looms large for people who are seen by many as being able to do no wrong. And when you have to hide it from the world and never really overcome that fear it becomes an interesting sort of neurosis.

Psychology is the writer's toy box. The better you understand it the more you can branch out from your own persona when you write characters.

wow neat. I like her belt and knee braces. They are different but they still go well with the piece. Nice!

Thanks. I was trying for the medieval long belt style but I could not remember what it looked like and didn't have a long enough belt on me to tie it so I kinda cheated visually.

I like the color scheme and the overall design. I take it the armour is supposed to be flexible like what Tony Stark has?

It's a mix of laminated material and leather. The whole thing looks shiny but it's not all hard material.

jmsnooks In reply to mindflenzing [2008-08-11 17:38:05 +0000 UTC]

Ah ok, makes sense.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mindflenzing In reply to jmsnooks [2008-08-11 22:57:34 +0000 UTC]

If it all has a sheen it's harder to tell where the material is hard and where it is not allowing more soft material to be used so as to enhance mobility and keep down weight. She's in medium armor so having plates everywhere is not necessary and like most medium-heavy armors she wears a padded material underneath to cushion the armor and absorb impact damage.

jmsnooks In reply to mindflenzing [2008-08-19 15:28:00 +0000 UTC]

makes sense

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mindflenzing In reply to jmsnooks [2008-08-19 22:49:57 +0000 UTC]

Add to that the fact that the armor is not standardized as to what kind of armor is in what area (though it is required to look a certain way) it keeps opponents guessing how heavy the armor they wear is.

jmsnooks In reply to mindflenzing [2008-08-25 17:19:27 +0000 UTC]

That makes sense, and it's black so maybe the blood won't show up as well.

For the paladin orders it varies by their local chapter. Her chapter is the "Sisterhood of the Martyred Hero" or something like that so they wear black but white and crimson are also common colors.

great armor design. It's always tough to come up with something that looks like it can work in battle, but not be too taxing to draw

Cool armor. I like the coverings over the shoulders and upper arms. It is also a sharp hair style, one very similar to one I want to try in some of my work. The only difference it in my version the banks are long but are clipped back. But the effect is the same. It says "warrior" as loud as it says "woman."
