Description
Feel free to ask me any questions about Keuv, one of my most recent of finalized characters (aka, Characters that I have settled on THE design for, have personalities, histories, and all that jazz). Any questions about her will be listed here. :3ABOUT KEUV
Q:You only show one side of her. What does her other side look like?
A: Her markings are comepletely symmetrical, which is why I show her facing one way to save space. However, I do show her from behind so You can see her markings from above (as well as see what she looks like climbing trees and trying to blend in...)
Q:Do you Role Play Keuv?
A: Yes I do!
Q: Is Keuv 17 in human years, or Kerrmakya? If Kerrmakya, how old is she in human?
A: Kerrmakya years and Human years are actually pretty much the same. So she's JUST a Seventeen year old, still not fully grown. She's just mature for her age, since she's been hunting since she was old enough to do so for her pack.
Q: Keuv's parents -- What are their ranks?
A: Keuv's dad (named Akando) is the Alpha Male, being the strongest, largest, and wisest of the pack. He usually stays with the main group, which is more of a nomadic Civilization then Keuv's hunting party, which is more animalistic. Keuv's mother is the Healer for the main group, and not an Alpha.
Q: How large is Keuv's pack?
A: Depends on what you see as her pack -- there is her hunting party, which has her, Four Runners, Two Trippers. Her main pack has about 34 members, not including cubs.
ABOUT THE KERRMAKYA SPECIES
Q:What is a Kerrmakya?
A: Kerrmakya are a wetland dwelling dragon species from Draconia, and share a joint ancestor with the Merdrac. Like Merdracs, they are mammalian and poisonous. They are also called Marshhunters, Swampdragons, Waterwolves, and Eagle hunters. They are actually simular to the platapus, who is also a poisonous aquatic mammal. Like the Platapus, they are egg layers, but feed their hatched cubs milk. Because of the egg laying and color shifting abilities, they are often mistaken for reptiles.
Q:On the subject of gliding, about how much distance can they glide considering their size?
A: Kerrmakya are are actually hollow boned, like a bird. This gives them extra strength but also makes them lighter for their airborne travels. They also have two "extra stomachs" that store a lighter then air gas that helps make them even lighter. However, they usually can only glide about 200 feet from tree to tree, though the higher they get, the more they can glide. They are pretty good at controling the glide, so they could actually control it when chasing after prey, avoiding trees and attacking from above or behind, digging their poisonous sixth claws in (or slashing at the prey with the claw).
Q:Are swamps their only homes or can they reside elsewhere?
A: They live anywhere where there is fresh or mixed water. Everglades, rivers, swamps, bogs, lakes, the list goes on. They tend to avoid the ocean since, on a rough day they would have a hard time getting anywhere despite being very strong swimmers. They also avoid areas with swift currents, prefering lakes, slow moving rivers, and wetland to quick water where there are cascades and waterfalls.
Q: Are all of them generally based with the same color?
A: No, I just like blue so tend to use it more often.
Q: s there a certain range of colors that's common? Orrr do they just come in any color at all? Orrr do they come in camouflage-ish color
A:Usually the base color is a cool color, and the markings are basicly any color. Horn and hair are usually grey, black, brown, or, occationally, a light tan simular to their claws. On rare occations the colors are reversed -- light warm base color with cool markings. Its sort of like a black panther or a king cheetah.
Q: Are they all basicly the same build?
A: While their builds are pretty simular, Keuv is a spotter, but almost big enough to be a Tripper.
There are a few "Ranks" in the Pack
Alpha: these are the two largest members of the pack, male and female -- they dont always have to be mates. They tend to be the best fighters in the group, and their main job is protection and leadership.
Tripper: Heavier set Kerrmakya are often the Trippers -- they are the ones that usually make the kill when hunting, knocking over the prey and attacking it with their paws.
Spotter: There is usually only about two to four spotters to pack, and they take turns. They must be keen of vision and hearing, as well as intelegent and mature. They make the calls when off in a hunting party, and directing the group's attack. When a hunting party splits from the main group, sometimes for days, they usually only have one Spotter with them.
Runner: The swiftest of the Kerrmakya, they are lean and lanky. Their job is to tire out the prey and lead them towards the slower Trippers.
Buzzer: These are the lightest of the group, usually cubs and adolecents that have shown skill in hunting and gliding. They scare the prey and drop items on them from above.
There are also ranks that go from cup to elderly and everything in between, but they are just pack members and have no title (unless they are the healer or Drum maker).
Q: What do the males look like?
A: Here are some examples [link] [link]
Q: Any rules for the markings?
A: Only a few-- most of the ones in Keuv's pack have eye markings like a mask (hense the name "Melimika" or wise bitter raccoon for their pack) and tend to have more markings on their tail paddle, as well as eyespots on their frills.
Q: Is the Alpha male/female the only two Kerrmakya allowed to mate?
A: No.
Q: Then does the male or female have more then one mate?
A: What is it with you people and mating?! Anyways, Kerrmakya breed for life, and form pairs inside the pack. Because of this, they are very picky over who they mate with. The entire pack helps raise the cubs.

Anyways, THIS is why I don't really make refrence pages -- I get carried away so easily that I end up with a TON of work. XD
Keuv and the entire Kerrmakya species belongs to /Tyra A/me.

XD Heck yeah, starting with the basis of them being related to the whale like Merdracs and then going to the otter like prewhale of ancient times.. then just messing with things till it was something that seemed like they could be real (at least in my opinion of what "real" is XD)
*hug* thank you for the wonderful comment <3333

No, I've stated a few time to other people over time that The Kerrmakya are too close to my heart to let people make a draik to try and join unless I invite them to first. I may have a "Design a Kerrmakya" for NPC's in the village, but only people I invite to make one can.
This is namely because, as co-creator of the Merdracs, I've seen too many people create Merdracs but didnt read their biology, psycology, culture or anything, really, make designs that are basicly thrown together bits of existing Merdracs, basicly creating Mary Sue's with Cliche stories that are completely against that of the merdrac culture. and then, when we tell them "Sorry, your Merdrac isn't developed enough to be a member, please either try again or try and make your own species of draik"
They just continue using the Merdrac name and design, but give us no credit and claim they made it themselves.
Because of this... I'm keeping the Kerrmakya free from that. The merdrac were only opened up because Fatal and I made them together. The Kerrmakya are totally and purely mine. And I don't want people to claim them as their own...

Yeah, I see what you mean. I mght make my own species of draik but I'll only let my friends alowed to join the clan. That way I can trust them to read the bio and not copy any deisgns off of other members.

This is beautiful, what program did you use to make this? Photoshop, Corel, or something else? I'm not very good with photoshop, but I'm trying to get better at it - like you and Aura. (: Awesome reference for Keuv.

I used Photoshop CS. XD This took forever to do, and I didnt even shade it so the marking colors will be pure incase people wanted to use an eyedropper tool. X3
keep practicing. Not too long ago this was the best photoshop picture I ever did , and the lineart was done by pen and the color was one layer using multiply. I've advanced a lot since then. And with practice, your'll advance too.

Honestly, I didn't even notice that it wasn't shaded. I just love how much work you put into Keuv and her species, I'm working on my own creatures myself - since I've been inspired by Keuv. But thanks, I'll try alot more - I can't wait until I become as advanced as you.

Its always trying to create a species. Took me freaking forever to do -- before I really started developing her as a character, I spent a lot of time designing the species. About three months of sketches went into designing

Heh, a lot of the first sketches were pretty fugly -- I had been trying to make a lionfish/cuttlefish merdrac of sorts and couldnt get them to look how I wanted them, and I was over at my grandmas and watched Meerkat manor and Little Zoo that Could while making sure she didnt faint after having her galbladder removed. Her body type was designed from the Meerkats, and the fur came from sort of mountain sheep or goat or whatever they were -- some really agressive species. The males have the horns of the species too.

ravenclawxwhitewolf In reply to mindsend [2007-01-25 01:59:53 +0000 UTC]
Meerkats, I would've never guessed; that's rather original for a species close to the Merdracs. But I love both those shows, I mostly watch The Little Zoo that Could. I've also noticed the horns of the males, I like how they look on them; instead of the smooth horns that the females have, it makes them unique in their own species. If that even makes sense.
Hope your grandma is okay.

Oh, it was months ago -- I stayed for a week since my computer wasn't working for graphics so couldnt do any classwork anyways, so I hung out and she was fine within three days, it was mostly shock from losing something from inside the body and those wonky drugs they gave her.
Well, look carefully at the body and tail. The legs, neck, and everything else is from different inspirations (The head is a traditional dragon head with the eyes and nostrals higher on the body like an gator, The ears are sort of between hippo ears and cuttlefish tenticles <.< ... The Front legs are elongated tiger legs, and the back legs are a mix between tiger and bear with Squirrel-like feet with fingery toes for climbing trees, only not as long since they are retractable, making it sort of like between a Squirrel and a Clouded leopard, both of which have the rotating ankles that allow them to climb down things head first.)

That's just incredible on how many creatures you incorporated into the species; I like the part about the cuttlefish tentacles. I've never heard of rotating ankles before; well, now I know. Hee. Anyway, bravo on the entire process of creating Keuv and her species, I love it.

Oooooo I love all the scientifics you go in for this <3 It's fun getting as much detail in as you can even about anatomy and organs and stuff like that (I tend to do that with my own characters to help explain how they use certain abilities and stuff like that since all my stuff is Science Fiction, and yet a couple of them have "magic-like" abilities)

XD I know what you mean -- I often try to make my characters as realistic as possible most of the time - such as how I just couldnt bring myself to keeing Novadar's wings hovering behind him all the time. It lasted a good long time, but I've noticed that, when I doodle him, his wings have been getting larger and attaching to his back properly.
XD In her origonal design, The frills were actually her rib cage and curled up against her chest, much like that flying dragon lizard creature in.. Asia? I cant remember where exactly. But I opted for not making them her ribcage so they'd be more versitile.

I like this reference.^^ Also. is this kinda like the merdraik, like there can be a pod of them. But I don't think you would use the word pod for this species. Or are they solitary? Also while reading this, since they can bled into their surroundings like chameleons. Can they blend to newspaper? XD (so random.)

I havent decided yet -- Kerrmakya tend to make smaller packs, though the Melimika pack is sort of wierd now that Keuv has corrupted them with the whole "OMG COOKED MEAT" and "PEOPLE ARE NOT ALL TRYING TO EAT US" Stories. XD

I often enjoy reference work like this, and this one is particularly well thought out and fun to study. Excellent job.
Is the term "octopian" correct? I would have thought it "octopodan", as in, like the order Octopoda (octopus-- Mollusca/Cephalopoda/Coleoidea/Octopodiformes/Octopoda).
Cuttlefish (Cephalopoda/Coleoidea/Decapodiformes/Sepiida) have an amazing abilty to change color. They can strobe to hypnotize their prey or to give warning. But they do not change texture like octopuses.
On the plural of octopus, I quote Wiki:
Fowler's Modern English Usage states that "the only acceptable plural in English is octopuses", and that octopi is misconceived and octopodes pedantic. Octopi derives from the mistaken notion that octopus is a second declension Latin noun, which it is not. Rather, it is (Latinized) Greek...

XD I like saying "Octopian" cause it sounds like "people from Octopus" Like Floridian. XD
I knoooow <3 I love Cuttlefish. But, the Kerrmakya arent even as advanced in color changing as the Cuttlefish -- they really are closer to the Chameleon or Anole in color abilities.

I have seen octopi doing their disguise thing and seen cuttlefish shifting colors while diving. And been amazed at intelligent, inquisitive squid. On Grand Cayman, by the turtle farm, is a shore dive entry point. Squid hang out in that specific cove because they find the divers entertaining (and the divers scare off things that prey on squid). Several will follow you around when in the cove like bizarre puppies.
Cayman also is where I saw cuttlefish.

I plan on doing more work on her page -- because I didnt know your computer size, I made her page sort of narrow, and some adopts/fanart she's been getting are too wide for her layout..
And yus XD I had actually been rping my stb in the Masquerade as "Makya" (her family name) but once I offically got her I started Rping her as Keuv, letting her explore the clan a bit, and chatting with people outside of RP's too so I could get an even better feel of her personality outside of what I planned for her.
I'm also working on a list of things for her quarter of the Mindsend_elf gallery. So far, its mostly meat and a Tyrannian Indoor fountain. Likely going to go with lights and plants too.

Well, I've actually applied for pets before and have been told that I didnt get them JUST because the layout was too big for their screen/wasnt made with firefox in mind. XD
And many of my pets have last names, but of my draiks she's the only one with a true last name. Alohuaki has a title and Niltesh has nothing. XD Keuv has Makya... Which is a very common last name for the Tyrannian Kerrmakya, since one the first big packs was named Makya and those that decended from that grouping usually took the name as a family name so they wouldnt lose that identity when they broke into smaller packs or fused in with other groups with different names.
