And major props on the concept, I think it's a great idea.

I'm not sure how you added the Lens Flare, but I do mine on a separate layer with a black backdrop. This allows me to add any Layer Blending Modes to the Lens Flare that I want... which means I can use Linear Dodge to blend the layers really well. I'm not sure how you added your Lens Flare, but DO NOT ADD IT ON THE SAME LAYER AS ANYTHING ELSE! You loose control over your Photomanipulation, and that's never good.
If you added the Flare on the same layer as the guy, ditch the layer and redo it with the Flare on a separate black Layer, and use the Linear Dodge blending mode.
If you added the Flare on a separate black layer, use the Linear Dodge blending mode.
If you added the Flare on a separate black layer and you used the Linear Dodge blending mode, up the Brightness value of your Lens Flare...
and no matter which method you use, I suggest playing with Levels/Brightness/Contrast, because the flare is a bit too wide, and not bright enough in the centre.
Also, you might have added the Flare after brushing on some white in the center... this works, but just like using ONLY Lens Flare, you need to do it on a black Layer so you can manipulate the way it blends.
Oh, and if you don't have the Linear Dodge blending mode... GO GET PS7!
I like the darkened pupil, it does blend better. It looks less plastic than your other attempts.
Also, don't be *afraid* of it looking cartoonish... a realistic effect is really hard to achieve with ANY medium of art; in fact, only a very small percentage of artists can achieve a realistic effect, and of those, only a very small percentage really WANT to. A lot of photographers go through great amounts of pain to make sure their photographs DON'T look realistic. It's art.
Also... for some reason... it's easier to get a realistic effect with dark, depressing work. Wonder why that is...
