Description
Here's that surprise I told you guys about! A full-body sketch of our intimidating puppy, Frostbite! Thanks again to CuriousCucumber! (that $25 design fee was so worth it)Frostbite:
"Proud and not very chatty" is how many describe Frostbite. As a Well Guardian serving under the mighty Predaking, Frostbite takes great pride in his Predacon heritage, and the highly-honed senses he has been gifted with as a beast. Consequently, he doesn't take kindly to those who view him as a simple "savage" useful only for keeping vermin in check. He is a warrior to the bone, so enemies beware angering him – his giant saber fangs are for more than just raw damage output. His incredibly keen sense of smell also means that hiding from him is quite a challenge; it requires both an understanding of how his tracking abilities work and special means of evasion by trickery.
Despite being a warrior born and bred, and a successful hunter to boot, Frostbite is famous for his reluctance to issue true harm. Rather than claw and shred, he is happier paralyzing foes and dragging them away from innocent bystanders. Indeed, his freezing, paralytic bite even has medical applications that his rescue crew in Iacon regularly utilizes. His kindness and protective nature is also well respected in Iacon, both by his rescue crew and by the Iaconian people as a whole. Known officially as "the White Hound of Iacon," among his rescue crew he is affectionately nicknamed "Danger Doggo." The wolf, on Earth, has always been a symbol of defensiveness, companionship, and loyalty, and no one better embodies it than Frostbite.

REVELATION: Frostbite has been revealed to be a special individual known as the Hyenhet ki Honv, or "Horn of the Hunt" – a living lieutenant of the ghostly, grim Onyx Prime. He is now able to summon the Wild Hunt, select individuals chosen by Onyx after death to serve him, through his howl. As such, he has also been named as Finhuz ki Relkan, or the Blade of Fidelity, for his unwavering loyalty towards his allies. To cement this title and his newfound powers, he was gifted with a massive 2h greatsword he has called "Mauling."

Why else do you think his crew back home call him "Danger Doggo"? ^-^
fair warning: if you try to use that nickname on him and you're not one of his rescue crew, you'll be in for a bad time

So freaking epic! I wish I could draw Predacons this well! (Perhaps I need to work on simplifying designs...?)
I'd love to see a full-color version of this--Considering Frostbite already looks like he's about to step off the page, how epic would that be?

It's funny 'cause Curious thinks she isn't all that good at drawing Predacons xD (Predacons look quite complicated in the show but Curious likes to work with slightly simpler designs, so that equates to her using larger plates wherever she can get away with it. Maybe you can use this as a "study" for yourself on how to draw them in future?)
I would give it a go but I don't have any digital art programs aside from Paint 3D, and I don't have the correct colors to work with hard-copy, not to mention I'm fearful I'd ruin it because I don't know how to wok with light reflections on metal. But hey, you're free to download it and try to color it. Use it as practice if you want!

I think it might be a case of Curious not giving herself enough credit--she's clearly got a firm grasp of the Prime-verse style! And considering that there are so few Predacons in the show to use as examples (and it seems a lot of artists favor Draconians, understandable considering how much time Predaking got onscreen, plus, you know, dragons), that just further proves that she's got skills.
(That might work. I tried to do that a bit with Spritelight's design, especially because it fit with the insect motif he had going on...I think part of the problem, particularly with Infernus, is that I can't quite get the hang of the style yet, plus I'm possibly overthinking how his plating should move--I may be trying to make it too "organic", in a sense...I'm also wondering if perhaps one of the reasons the plating pattern doesn't quite fit yet is because it might not fully reflect Infernus himself...Think about Optimus, his character/background in both Prime and FoY, his design, and hopefully that makes a bit more sense when applied to Infernus--and if that's the case then I'm kicking myself for not thinking of that sooner, because that's kind of the point of designing a character. Apologies for the rant...)
Yeah, light reflections can be tricky. I'm still trying to figure out light-on-water...And thanks for the offer! I may take that up at some point--probably once I get Infernus's design and Sprite's swords and shield fully figured out... (Plus, you know, college and all that)

She did a Lion Predacon recently as a commission to someone. Give that beauty a look for further study. Grimlock from RiD2015 is another good example, even if he is a bit blockier than someone like Prime Predaking, that might be helpful to work with
(That might be your problem -- overthinking how his plating moves and thus that keeps the design looking too "organic." It doesn't have to be. Like you can tell Frostbite is a wolf but there's a distinct Cybertronian spin to it. He just feels stiffer. Magnus and Optimus too, and if you watch how Op's hips move you'll note that movement isn't quite human/organic. Just watch him walk in a few moments of the opening mini-series "Darkness Rising" and you'll see what I mean. Arcee is the only one who's design is mostly tinier plates, and that's why she's so agile and mobile, but you can still feel a bit of stiffness in her movements; everyone else is much more block-ier in their movements, especially Ratchet, Breakdown, Magnus, and Bulkhead. Praxcrown actually points out there should be no way for Magnus to cross his arms because of the way his shoulders are designed. Think on that -- metal bodies are stiffer, and if you design a body part one way it can impact how that part interacts with others. Frostbite, for example, you can tell his back legs have more mobility because of those round swivels on his haunches and lower leg, while his front legs appear to be stiffer and more designed for pure thrust to pull then launch him forward because they lack those round swivels. That means he's pretty much operating in the Predacon equivalent of "real wheel drive," and that's the complete opposite of how organic wolves operate when running. So there's no reason for a Cybertronian animal to obey the usual anatomy laws of Earth animals.
(I see what you mean about the character design. Where Optimus was more of a "civilian" in design -- he actually has the most non-aggressive body design of the lot, next to Ratchet. He was a reluctant fighter, more preferring to negotiate than cross swords, and that's reflected in his design, but of course that didn't stop him from getting serious in a brawl; you'll note he uses his greater size to his advantage a lot, like every chance he can get, even in vehicle mode. Infernus on the other hand is basically the body equivalent of "if negotiation won't work, then let's give Megatron a real fight." He's got a far more aggressive design; lean, like his previous shape, but sharper and has a lot more jutting angles. Spear tail. Claws. Fangs. Horns. He's got more joints than Predaking does especially in his front limbs but there's still going to be a stiffness in his movement because plates rub against each other and prevent movement in certain direction. Like, humans can reach up and around to our upper backs but I'm pretty sure most Cybertronians can't due to the fact they don't have an entire system of tendons and muscles and ligaments that provide for a fuller range of motion; they only have things like hinges and swivels and stuff, ergo their motions are going to be stiffer. Reaching up to scratch your head in confusion only really requires the use of your elbow and shoulder, an almost entirely vertical movement -- try it for yourself to see -- and you'll note his wrist motions are probably the stiffest of the crew, i.e. when he does that movement his wrist hardly moves at all when doing the actual head scratch. Ratchet on the other hand proved he has full mobility of his shoulder and can swing it 'round like a pitcher before he throws a baseball, evidenced in that episode where he concocts that synth-en for the first time. Makes sense; a medic needs to be more mobile.)

I've been re-watching Prime to try and get the feel for the style and character movements again--it helps, but I will take a look at some of RiD'15 because you're right, looking at Grim's design would probably be pretty helpful. I'll look for that lion commission, too--the wider a variety of Predacons I can find, the more examples I have to study. Thanks
(True. That might actually have a lot to do with it--even though dragons and other such creatures don't exist, one cannot help but model designs based on living creatures simply because they are what w have to study. Of course a Cybertronian dragon would not move like an Earth dragon--if, of course, dragons and Predacons actually existed--but because all we know is the Earth dragon and its movements, it makes the most sense to us to mimic that. Although that does, as you said, bring up an interesting point about Ultra Magnus's design--I'll have to pay closer attention to him, but perhaps there is a socket joint otherwise hidden beneath the overly large pauldrons? Because otherwise that raises a lot of questions about some of the larger 'Bots in general...)
(That's a part of it, yeah. But there's also the fact that Optimus's design also reflects Orion Pax--there wasn't a huge physical change, after all, and as such the events of the Orion Pax arc, as far as character design was concerned, was still really believable (try that post-Darkmount and I feel it might fall a little flat). It's a bit harder with Infernus, I think, first because it's such a drastic change, and also because, well, there is a certain 'impressiveness'--for lack of a better word--to a Predacon, and to a Prime as well. I've been trying to balance that with Infernus's personality, and Infernus's personality with Smokescreen's--which sounds a bit odd, but even though he hasn't changed much there still is a change. Plus, if you really think about it, Orion and Smokescreen had quite a bit in common when it came to being chosen as Prime--This carries on to them as Optimus and Infernus, and part of that does appear to be personality and mentality regarding their rank. I'm not sure if this is me reading into things or if that was actually intentional--which would explain a few things--but it's one of the things that made me pause and wonder if I needed to redesign Infernus (again).
That being said, I've prettymuch got his facial plating sorted, since that's obviously the most important for expressing a character's personality and thoughts and that's been 99% set for a long time since it was the first thing that I worked on because of how important it is to convey said personality and thoughts, but I'm wondering if that's why I'm having trouble with the plates on his body and limbs, as strange as that may sound...
Well, there's that and then there's trying to find the balance between plate size, density, and dull and pointy bits, and the whole thing with joints, but maybe if I figure out this other stuff that'll all sort itself out... Is there such thing as an mid-life crisis for art projects? Or maybe I'm just overthinking things again... )
