The Smoke and steam coming from the Challenger, it's a beautiful sight to see. Great photo of this beautiful engine.

I forgot to ask. Is this on the breakin run that they had a few years ago? I'd heard they were running it to and from Denver, and on the way back or something it had a massive boiler failure (I might be thinkin' of something else).

No you are thinking odd the 844 which they had out at steam days in California in 1999 and they had the failure. She was repaired and was finally pressure tested in late 2006 And then was re painted and made its first excursion in May on 2007. My photos of the 844 are of that trip.

Gotcha. One of my old coworkers had a friend who shot the 844 not knowing what it was (she wasn't a railfan), and she thought it was just some old train locomotive. She sent them to me and I about freaked.

One thing you can do to bring out the details in the shadows is (if you have photoshop), tweak the Shadows/Highlights (under Image), and that should actually help ease your burdens a little.

It's what I do to a lot of my shots, and it works wonders.

I just tried that and I am still fighting the same problem. the more I bring out the dark areas, the more pixelated it becomes.

Hmmm...Make sure you set the radius on both to be fairly large, as if it's too tight, it will cause more noise. How big of a res does your camera have?

That helped.... But it is still too much for my tastes..... This was shot on 35mm Fuji Film but my digital shoots up to 3504x2236.

ohhhhhhhhhhhhh...it's film.

heh, maybe when I get back I'll toy around with it and see what I can come up with...

alright.... give it a try.

I know most of the train nuts want to see detail. But I get it printed as is just for the image quality because most people like it for the subject, not the details.

could you bring out a little of the detail in the shadows? seeing more of the rods would be great.

Man... I have tried all I can to get as much detail out of it, but they really don't have their rails conveniently to put light on the right side for good photos.....
