Description It's a bit old, here's a little tool I made back in early 2013 to teach how Bézier curves works, to help vector artists understand how they work in order to make puppets and backgrounds out of them.

This is really neat, easier to use than Flash itself it seems!

Do they use Bezier curves to make the ponies in the show?

Yup, with multiple Bézier curves you can make a Béziergon, with multiple Béziergon you can make an asset, and with multiple assets you can make ponies and backgrounds to make the show.

you can use them to do it, but is it what they actually use? (I'm using bezier curves to make ponies, doesn't mean Hasbro does...)

Yup, I've seen DHX at work and I can confirm that's what they do.

You've seen DHX at work? Woah, did you visit their studio or speak to one of the animators?

I couldn't visit the studios because DHX is too far from me, but I got to talk to some animators about the animation.

oh, okay.

DHX? Who's that? (I suppose someone working on the show)

Yup, DHX is the animation studio in Vancouver doing the core of the animation, while Top Draw, a studio in the Philippines animates the scenes.

Wait, is this what you're supposed to use to draw, say, the outline of a Puppet that you can use to re-shape it, like re-shape it's hooves and stuff? I've never made a Puppet before, but I always figured it was just the paintbrush and people were really smooth with it.

When you draw a line and you curve it, you are creating a Bézier curve, a curve generated by a mathematical formula following two fixed points and two control points. Puppets are made using these curves, often using the subselection tool, which works just like this tool. They look very smooth because they don't have a lot of points, and the artist has all the control over them, unlike the brush tool, which makes shapes by assuming what you want and as they are not properly optimized, they will generate a ton of anchor points in your shape that are a pain to reedit.

The problem is that many artists just curve the lines with the selection tool and don't use the subselection tool when it could help them a lot because it behaves differently, so I made this little tool to get them used to the subselection tool very quickly.

For someone like me who's never tried it before, that is DAMN confusing to understand xD But I appreciate the response and upload to help those who need it. I should look up Puppet building tutorials some time. THEN I'll know what you were talking about a bit better

Then if it's for a puppet building tutorial, I got this covered.

Oh, nice. I'll give the Channel a lil subby-subby so I don't forget I ain't checkin' it out right now, cos it's half 2am and I need to feel like animation before opening Flash, but this'll certainly help me out. Thanks ^_^
