They need it for detecting light but generally - compound eyes guarantee wide angle of sight. Their resolution is not so big but they are good enough to see some polarization of light and what is more important - fast movements :] Of course it is one of the miracle of evolution - this insects must be fast to survive so they must have very good senses and react quickly :]

I used some unsharp mask on lab channel here but it wasn't drastic because with high sharpening photo was very ugly.
The main point is to make a truly sharp picture of compound eyes and then - eventually - we can work with some sharpening but it is always limited because it is very easy to oversharpen the picture.

I'm using Nikon d70S. This picture was done with Tamron 90 lens and the set of extension rings (they give higher magnification).

I don't kill flies. They're too cute... in a pathetic helpless sort of way... That's the exact image I get from those eyes. He's probably disease ridden but I still want to hug him...
