Edit: I'm sorry to keep you guys waiting, really sorry T_T--
"Well, that was refreshing," Roe said as she was adjusting her ponytail. "You just gotta let it go sometimes."
Artemisia smiled slightly, although the smile did not quite reach her eyes. It had been over a month since she was sent to this place by her parents, and it would be a major understatement to say that she was going nuts not knowing what happened to them. Well, she knew that life had come to a standstill after her departure, that everyone fell in a deep slumber, but by all means, if someone decided to attack Vivieldis, her planet was defenseless. A shiver that had nothing to do with the cool early evening breeze went through her spine, and she felt dangerously close to a breakdown. An ancient prophecy brought down from generation to generation in Primaveria rang through her mind; a princess will lost all she has, all her hope, and the region of spring will succumb in an eternal night with only the living dead to accompany the lifeless plants.
"Do you feel alright, Artemisia?" Rosie asked on her other side, worry shadowing her light blue eyes. The two had just taken Artemisia out to a movie to relax, and then had a drink at one of the cafés near the beach. But still, the lavender haired fairy didn't really keep her mind on the movie and didn't have anything to say on it afterwards when they were sitting in the café, stirring her drink absent-mindedly for five or six times and only taking a couple of sips. Rosie could feel that her friend's hopelessness and unhappiness was turning into something darker, something like a depression if she has to put a finger on it, and this was saddening her.
"I... don't know, to be honest," Missie said, leaning her head back to look at the newly appearing stars. She remembered counting each constellation with Perse on Vivieldis. A lump formed in her throat as she hugged herself. "It's just that... It has been so long... I wish we had heard something... I wish I could see that monster one more time and make him pay back!"
Her voice rose an octave and she felt a sting as her nails bit into her skin with the force she was holding her arms. Roe came in front of her, putting her hands lightly on the younger fairy's arms. "We will make him pay back." She corrected in a soft, determined voice. "You don't have to worry about it..."
"Yeah, but when?" Artemisia snapped, pushing the pink haired fairy's hands away in a rather harsh way. "We do all these pretty small talk all the time, when are we going to get him?" A lone tear made its way down her cheek. "When my planet is all but wiped out?" Her voice cracked in the end.
"Artemisia..." Rosie began, but she had no patience for this.
"Guys, just... Please give me a moment alone. Go ahead, I'll catch up with you."
Roe and Rosie looked at one another, then came to a decision. Rosie looked back at her friend once more before turning to go. "Stay safe," she warned in her soft voice, and then they were gone.
Artemisia walked by herself along the ocean for who knows how long, taking off her sandals and letting the waves tickle her feet, making her alive again, calming her down a little bit. She felt embarrassment settling in the further she walked. She shouldn't have shouted at her friends, while all they had done was to try to cheer her up. She sighed, kicking small pebbles out of her way.
That's when her eyes landed on something on a shadowed corner, something so huge that if it weren't for the small number of people populating this part of the beach, someone might have had a heart attack. It was a beast - seemingly fast asleep - its scales glowing dimly under the setting sun. This and the strange beauty of the creature was not what attracted her attention, though - it is the impossible feeling that it seems so familiar somehow.
And then it clicked to her mind. She gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "You..." she whispered as a tremor came over her body, unable to control her feelings. She yelled as she transformed in her recently acquired Believix.
Her voice wasn't enough to wake the sleeping creature up, but the blast on its nose was more than enough to do the job. It blinked lazily, and roared once as it straightened on its rear legs, clearly annoyed. Artemisia flew to the other side as the dragon flapped his wings, and prepared another blast, her fist high in the air. That's when she made eye contact with the creature. The dragon halted in the middle of inhaling to throw a fireball at the fairy, confusion clear in its eyes. Artemisia didn't flinch as she sent the next attack over the beast's eye. The creature roared angrily and flapped his paw in front of his eye, much like what a human could do. Then it turned to Artemisia and bared its teeth, making the fairy think that it was grinning.
"Well, then," the beast spoke in a raspy voice, and the lavender haired fairy hold her breath. "I guess you prefer me this way."
Then it started morphing. The scene was so horribly painful that Missie stood frozen still. The beast got smaller, its form defining into more like a human shape, its mane growing shorter until it reached only his lower back. The only aspects that gave a clue about his dragon form was the sickly green scales on his chest and his vertical pupils. Artemisia took all these in only a minute, because the next, she was on the offense again, with an enraged roar that almost equaled her rival's.
The man blocked her attack with a fire wall he created by raising his hand. "Do you really think just because you caught me off guard once, you can beat me?"
"We will see!" Missie yelled, shooting blast after blast. Each one, the man blocked effortlessly.
"Oh, come now, princess," he said tauntingly, a maniacal grin on his face. "Can't we two have a normal, civilized conversation once in a while?"
"We can have a conversation when you are safely locked in an asylum." She was running short on breath, which wasn't a good thing. She stopped attacking in random to gather herself up and prepare for a bigger assault. "WHAT have you done to my family?" she cried out, angry tears almost clouding her vision. She refused to show any weakness in front of this guy.
"Ah, they are of no use to me now," the wizard said, waving his hand dismissively. Artemisia flew to the side to avoid the fire ball directed to her. "I left your planet to its own once you were sent here. The essence of life triumphs over everything."
"You'll never have it, I won't let you!" she said through gritted teeth.
"You cannot protect it," Reuben, now she remembered his name, said in delight, and the brightness in his eyes made her cringe a little inside. "Mark my words, the essence of life will refuse to be protected by the cursed one."
That caught her completely off guard. "What?" she asked in surprise, despite herself.
"Oh, so you don't know," Reuben continued, and by all things holy, that smirk was getting on her nerves even more. "Your father made an agreement with your protectors to rid your realm of the evil sprites threatening your elder sister. And your protectors, in turn, called on my help." Seeing that she wouldn't say anything, the elemental continued. "Of course, when I saw what your little planet offered... Well, sprites are easier folks to deal with, and you should know they hate your father and his rule, with everything they got. So instead of being the henchmen of your protectors, I went for the big prize."
"That's... not... I don't..."
"I'm not the real enemy, princess." Reuben said, delight coating his tone. "Your father decided to pledge his allegiance to your population, whose thoughtless decision cursed you and your realm. So next time you're in Vivieldis, princess, you will be lucky if they are not hunting for you!"
"LIAR!" Artemisia yelled and shooted with all her might. The light of the attack lit the whole beach and for a moment, it made the hallucination of daytime. But when the light faded and Artemisia was on her knees on the sand, in her human form, Reuben was nowhere to be seen. Instead, she heard a low chuckle and a fading away voice.
"Maybe next time, princess."
