Description
little drops of oil make rainbows on wet concreteand i don’t know how beautiful you find that,
but sometimes you gotta learn that
the littlest things are the prettiest,
like the shape of your fingernails and the crinkles
you get at the corner of your eyes when you laugh and
when you grow old and i know i said “grow old”
like it’s a temporary thing, but that’s because it is.
you can think it’s forever but it’s really
a split second because you don’t matter, not when
the universe is still growing and speeding through a nothingness
we can’t even fathom, not when color doesn’t exist in space
but nebulas still explode in shades of gold and green,
not when there are stars who die
before their light ever touches our faces. you don’t matter,
not to anyone but the people who have fallen in love
with the way you walk and the way you breathe
and the way you keep doing both.
i don’t care that the universe is spinning and growing
and constantly changing and i don’t care
for our idea of time and life, this paradox of
knowing something for so long that we start to believe
it can last forever. i don’t care about how tiny and
insignificant we all are. i believe in moles boasting about how
they’ve made mountains. i believe in boys kissing their mothers
and boys kissing boys and loving them
and themselves and little kids watching rain drops race down
their windows and i believe in worlds ending
on tuesdays in the middle of family dinner and i believe
in picking up the rubble on wednesday morning and doing it
all again. i believe in listening to shitty music on the way
to work and writing poems in our heads about
every sunset we see on our way home. i believe in
going home, even if that’s a house or a trailer or a country or a person,
even if you stop along the way to get dinner
or admire the scenery. i believe in the fleetingness of life,
and the idea of worlds being small and private and
special because someone, somewhere believes
that oil drops on wet concrete are the most beautiful
thing they have ever seen. and i believe that even
if all we have on this planet is a split second,
i want to spend every moment with you.

I come back to this every now and again when I need inspiration to doodle or write, and it remains my all-time favorite poem ever. I love how at the end of the last stanza of the first paragraph( is it called a paragraph in poetry?) It says, " you don't matter," and it makes you pause for a milisecond (is it because of the line break inbetween?), like you're in a conversation and you're waiting for someone to explain something that would have been otherwise hurtful but just ends up being beautiful and takes your breath away, even though use of repetition should've made the reader expect it. I sure didn't and boy I was pleasantly surprised lol

*Sniffs* Oh... I was not expecting this such beautiful literature to be so moving. I was very livid when I read this. Now that your words have touched me, the horrid anger was washed away with emotional tears of mixed feelings, of happiness, sadness and forgiveness, or whatever else I felt. It's so amazing how several words can change you mood completely. Thank you, you just changed a life once again. I will never forget this. Each time I feel furious, I will think of these words. Thanks a bunch! *Waves of tears commence* Thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!!!!

I swear I'm not joking when I say that tears formed in my eyes as I read this. It's the most inspiring thing I've ever read. I often get these rough days where everything screws up and I feel like it's all my fault, but this poem has made me feel so much better. If I ever have another bad day I'm going straight to this. Thank you so much

this was so powerful.. everything from the title to how it was written, as i read it a little melody came into my head as if i were reading the lyrics to a song i knew. i really like the honesty of this poem, especially "you don't matter ... keep doing both" - i feel the same way, nobody cares about you unless you give them a reason to, that sort of thing. but that verse (? i'm sorry, i'm not very familiar with poetry, heh) didn't ring cynical or harsh like the way i tend to voice a similar opinion. just the way it was written, along with how it was enveloped by the rest of the work, it gave it this really... hm. i'm not sure how to describe it, but it was comforting in a special sort of way.
i really liked "i believe in going home ... admire the scenery". that whole section was beautiful on its own, but just those five words "i believe in going home", i don't know, they hit me hard! it's hard to articulate why, but it was very poignant, and struck a chord with me. i believe in going home too.
one more thing - i believe the title really highlights the whole work! it's eye-catching, it's curiosity-piquing, and while i'm not shaking with anger now, i'm sure this will take on a whole new meaning if i read it again while i am.
i teared up a bit as i read this, i really did. congratulations on the dd!! you really deserve it... i'm sorry to hear you've been having a rough time lately. i hope things will look up for you soon. wonderful work.

Whether it's the pretty, swirling colors of an oil spill in the rain, or the gentle, moonlit breeze of a late night bicycle ride, sometimes the little things in life are the best part of life.
