Description
Mycroft Holmes was a busy man. He was constantly working, protecting the citizens of Britain and even though he only claimed to hold a ‘minor position’ everyone who knew him knew better than that.Mycroft’s life was surrounded by threats so much so that on occasion he would almost fear for his life. So when it came to you, the one thing that could thaw the heart of the ice-man, he wanted to keep you separate from his work as much as possible. He wanted to keep you safe and protected and innocent from the things he heard and saw.
However that proved harder and harder as your relationship became more serious: and now, Mycroft was internally going out of his mind while he maintained a calm façade.
You should have been home an hour ago.
For most relationships this would seem controlling, but you knew enough about Mycroft’s work to understand his reason to fret about you. So the fact that you hadn’t returned home or, after checking, had actually been seen by anyone since noon, 8 hours ago, had left Mycroft reeling.
Normally Mycroft would have eyes on you at all times and he did today, but it seemed Mycroft had been so caught up in his work that he failed to check in and realise the eyes were missing too.
Over time you had gotten used to seeing the same man where ever you went, he would be sitting in the coffee shop across the road or simply be sitting on a park bench when you left work.
Once you had even asked Mycroft if you were able to befriend the man and speak to him, clarifying that it seemed a tedious and lonely job. That had ended in Mycroft’s refusal and he simply would not budge on the matter.
Mycroft started to pace up and down his office, his hands itching to do something to find you, anything was better than sitting here. You could be dying right now, you could be in a dark room bleeding to death calling out for him and he was simply here doing nothing.
He shook his head, as though he was trying to erase the dark thoughts about you. He had to believe you were alive and that he would see you again.
He simply could not live without you.
You reminded him that he didn’t need to be alone just because he was different. You kept him in line and reminded him that just because he was intelligent didn’t mean he was better than other people.
When he first met you through his brother and Dr. Watson, he’d thought you were a goldfish. You seemed unintelligent and Mycroft simply cast you away as unimportant and how wrong he’d been.
In your defence the whole meeting was terribly boring and you needed something to stimulate your brain, and sitting drinking tea and exchanging pleasantries between the four of you was definitely not stimulating. Mycroft left Baker Street without even remembering your name.
The second time the two of you met was completely by accident. It had been pouring with rain and you’d be hoping for rain for days, so when it started to fall you ran out of the flat and straight into Mycroft.
Again he felt unimpressed with you and thought you incapable of being sensible.
You, on the other hand, thought he seemed very dull and obnoxious because he believed he was better than everyone else. When you crashed into him you slipped slightly and he caught you.
It was when you looked up into his eyes that he realised he had been mistaken, they were so full of life and happiness that he felt you were the most interesting person he had ever come across, he wanted to know what it was that amazed you about life.
You saw him staring and a light blush crept onto your cheeks and a small smile was on your lips.
‘May I ask where you are going?’ Mycroft asked, still holding onto you.
‘I’m going to go for a walk,’ you tell him with a large smile and he frowns at you thinking maybe he had been right to start with, it was pouring and you were planning on walking in it.
‘You do realise that it is pouring with rain, don’t you?’
You rolled your eyes before answering, ‘To me that’s kind of the whole point, it hasn’t rained in days and I’ve been craving it so dearly.’
Mycroft stared at you in wonder for a moment before you spoke again.
‘So if you’ll excuse me Mr Holmes, I’d like to get going before it stops again,’ you said, giving him a small smile and after gently removing yourself from his grasp and walked around him.
You were a few steps away before you heard him speak, ‘may I accompany you?’
The question caused you to quickly stop and face him with a raised eyebrow. The rain had already plastered your hair to your face and he was completely dry under his huge umbrella.
‘You can, but not if you use that umbrella. The point of walking in the rain is to actually get wet Mr Holmes,’ you told him.
Mycroft closed his umbrella and walked closer to you.
He gave you what you believed to be a genuine smile and the one you returned left Mycroft with butterflies. It was only moments later that the rain started to get lighter and then ceased altogether and Mycroft could see the disappointment in your eyes as you looked up at the sky.
‘Well that ruins my walk,’ you said quietly.
‘Perhaps you would like to join me for tea?’ he asked, almost hesitantly. He was happy to see the disappointment disappear as you smiled brightly.
‘I would love to Mr Holmes.’
He gave you a smirk and offered you his arm, ‘(y/n), there is no need to call me Mr Holmes, Mycroft will suffice.’
You grinned and repeated his name several times and the way it sounded so safe and real on your lips, like it belonged there, almost made his heart stop.
It was safe to say that day was the day Mycroft believed he was actually lonely and that he didn’t want to be anymore.
