Description
She saw the corpse of the huge beast before she'd even touched down. Proud, even in death, her scales glinted in the failing sunlight. Stepping closer, she saw something that made her heart sink.Egg shell, crushed underfoot.
Gingerly, she picked up a piece of the fragile shell and examined it. To her joy, itl was dry - no yolk, no sad corpses of unborn dragonets to be found.
Sadly, she closed the huge mother dragons' jewel-like eyes for the last time and left. They had to be around somewhere. A nagging voice reminded her that dragonets commanded a great price on the black market, but she chose to ignore it; she had to be sure.
Taking to the sky once more, she cursed the dragon slayers. They came for excitement and for glory, without realising the damage they did. She strained her eyes looking for tiny, iridescent bodies in the failing light, hoping against all hope that at least one had escaped.
Movement. Could it really be the flutter of tiny wings? With her heart in her mouth, she landed as quietly as she could. Slowly she crept towards the base of a gnarled, old tree. To her delight, three small bodies huddled together, their wings wrapped around each other in comfort. In her joy, she quickened her pace, starting two of the little dragonets into the branches of the tree, whilst one remained huddled at its base.
"Oh, little ones... little ones... I had dreaded the worst! Come here... there is nothing to fear... I am here to help you".
The dragonets regarder her owlishly as she extended her hands to them. She smelt... right. To her delight, the smallest fluttered down and regarded her warily. She crouched, allowing him to assess her on his own terms. He then cocked his head at her curiously and hopped onto her knee. Smiling, she looked above her head; his sister had decided to make use of the lowest branch, and was regarding her with interest. The only one who remained wary was, ironically, the largest of the three. She outstretched her hand to him, offering him a welcoming, encouraging smile. Still he cowered back from her, the events of the day still obviously fresh in his mind.
With a smile, she whispered.
"Do not worry, little one. You are safe now. I will not hurt you."
Blargh.
I screwed this one up. This has not turned out the way I wanted it to! I wish I had the time to paint it digitally, then I could fix the horrid anatomical errors and actually put some bloody detail into those poor dragonets. Such is the short comings of coloured pencil when you are limited to an A4 scanner...
Saying that, this took me longer than I thought it was going to - about 15 hours over 3 days.
Still.. those dragon slayers never think about the poor baby dragons left behind, do they? So this is what I like to think happens to them - that there is a dedicated race of people (who or what they are is kind of up to you...) who looks after them and makes sure they're okay. Either that, or she's some kind of dragon Angel... but that means the dragonets are dead, and that makes me sad! So I decided that she's a guardian.

I love the description, the coloring, shading, and highlighting and her dress. I also love the texture and the white border, yet the dragons, leaves, and her wings slightly go over it, leaving it a non-constricting border. I love her hair and armor, too. This is fantastic!

Very cool. I love the wings (on both the guardian and the dragonets), and I think you did a beautiful job using colored pencils. They are very cute dragonets.

it's darling! I love it! The colors are so soft... poor lost dragonlings. I love their delicate little heads. And yes... real media is rather... annoying that way isn't it? Just when you think you've got it right... you put blue where you wanted green and that's the end of that. I'm SUCH a ctrl+z junkie now....
BUT! Remember you can always go back to your original pencil scan and do it digitally if you want to! This is one of the reasons I always scan my pencil sketches. Just in case, after I go do something to them later, I can start with the original again.
In any case, I think this would be a lovely addition at EMG. Dragons ftw!

The concept is so sweet it's almost enough to melt my black and shriveled little heart. Maybe I'll think of the little buggers as being dead then...and NOT be sad about it...just so I can reclaim some of the darkness in me.
Seriously though...no damned wonder you're so freakin good at coloring digitally, if you can make colored pencils look THIS good then you're obviously crazy good at coloring. I mean really Elysia, how many colored pencil drawings have you seen that looked this good? I know it can be hard to get crisp and smooth colors out of those damned pencils but you've totally managed it here. I don't know what the hell you were hoping for, but this looks terrific to me. You're (once again) being too hard on yourself.
You going to try and get this one added to EMG as a print? I think they'd approve it.
*slinks away to go draw evil eeeevil naughty things to counteract the cutie sweetness I've been exposed too.* Hehe.

I think it's very beautiful....I like the little "story" you put with it; the picture is inspirational enough but couple with the story it really has a wonderful air about it. I understand what it's like to not get something to look quite like how you wanted it to but I personally love it still

Hey, I think it's wonderful. You did a fantastic coloring job with the pencils and the wings and costume is really good too. You did a good job with the work's description, the story that went with it. It's great when artists do that!

A very beautiful and endearing concept.
Almost makes me want to continue a 'series' of these and create my own guardian.
*scratches head* ...If I had time.
Either way, I still think you did a wonderful job, CG-ed or not.

Thank you. I think the problem is that I had a very clear idea of what this looked like, but it didn't want to play the game! I have to say, that is the joy of digital painting... you can muck around with things knowing that you've got a back up incase things go wrong. With traditional pieces, you don't have that safety net, so when the colours dull (which is what this did) you're kind of stuck with it. Ah well!
