Hi! Great question!
I use air dry clay (because I can't afford a kiln yet) and sculpt it. For the masks with a lot of negative/empty space I use additional wire under the clay for stability. In traditional sculpting I believe it would be called armature. I use lots of different mixed media-whatever gives me the texture/look I'm aiming for. So for these masks, silk flowers, shoe strings, plaster, chiffon fabric, crystals, beads...
