Description Uploading it because someone actually cares! w00t XD

Solid State Scouter's coloring process, step-by-step. As I said before, it was a really simple image to color and an example of how I color my sketches quickly, minus that I don't usually do such strong lighting... or draw such dark sketches. But toned sketches are really nice to work with!

The steps toward the end (last row) all look the same, kinda... the differences are hard to make out because they're all relatively small changes (and because the previews themselves are tiny .__. sorry).
Basically, 14 adds white highlights (best seen on the gloves), 15 a second layer of brown outlines and 16 fixes all the tiny imperfections I left till the last minute. You can probably see the biggest difference throughout the row in his left armor plate (?) on the bottom right.

Let me tell you, after experimenting with coloring in about 50 other ways... this was extremely simple! It doesn't get much simpler than this, really. I am totally serious.
All it takes is a bit of knowledge on layers and done!

Hm but 20 layers

Mizutori In reply to bayjam [2009-10-07 19:16:58 +0000 UTC]

It's only to keep things tidy and organized... XD There's no actual need for that many layers, after all.

Just don't be so quick to give up...! It does take some practice... I'm sure you can do it!

I'd like to learn to use my Photoshop like that o__o I'm just too lazy to do it. And my head explodes if I have to use more than 4 layers in one pic

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mizutori In reply to Tundris [2009-10-05 14:31:43 +0000 UTC]

WHAT. FOUR LAYERS.

My head explodes if I use anything less than 10, and THAT is stretching it!! I'm too neurotic about things. If I have my way, every color/area in a thingy will have its own layer. It makes changing and fixing things later waaaaaaay easier...!
With only 4 layers.... THAT WOULD KILL MEEEE~~~! YES it would...

But yeah, I think this has like... 20 layers or so. That's discounting the layers I duplicated when I made massive changes and wanted a backup (there's probably around 10 of those). Most are just base color, but then there's the 'effect' layers (BG gradients, outlines, white and yellow highlights and hard shading).
It sounds kinda overkill but the truth is it's really simple and not hard to learn at all! Anyone could do it. I'm not a Photoshop wizard either so I go with what works for me.

The thing with toning the sketch itself is that it takes care of most of the shading for you when it comes to coloring. It kinda feels like cheating, lol So then all you need to do is add some color and shading details. :>

...Now why did I just type a wall of text.

But... but that just sounds so complicated! 👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mizutori In reply to Tundris [2009-10-06 21:33:39 +0000 UTC]

We are all guilty of going into wrong layers.... ! That's why I always name my layers and, when I'm seriously paranoid, color-code them. I've had some truly horrible experiences with half parts being in the wrong layers...
Although actually when I'm done with the picture I nearly always do superficial touch-ups on the JPG version - the one-layer-only bastard child of the PSD file XDD lol

But yeah, the more you practice... You should go for it! I'd like to see the fruits of using more layers!

I admire those that can work without layers though. It must be so freeing somehow. Kinda like working with paper, another thing I can't do. I think I'm too scared of messing up, so I need to be able to go back on a whim... Hey, I just realized why I use so many layers. .__."

Tundris In reply to Mizutori [2009-10-07 18:31:34 +0000 UTC]

I name them, too, but I always either forget to change the layer or simply just jump back to previous layer by undoing some mistake.
Haha I've already tried it I must admit that it is pretty handy after all. But it takes a hell of a lotta more time x__x

Paper working = best working. Tho' I haven't really finished a single work since I was 12. I mess up all the time, maybe that's why I'm used to it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mizutori In reply to Tundris [2009-10-07 19:26:45 +0000 UTC]

OMG, I hate it when that happens!!! It's always when you make a new layer and undo by accident.. and you end up fucking up the previous layer soo much!! AGHHHGHHAHAJ!!! But the history can save me... and the SAVE STATES, YES!
I now make it a habit to look at the Photoshop window bar (which also has what layer I'm on written on it) before doing anything (because looking in the layer bar takes too long, since I dock it)... Call it a survival instinct.

Hell yeah, it's handy! XD And hell yeah, it takes longer... But I gotta say, since I've done it this way since forever I don't even know the difference anymore, haha.

...I'm so jealous of your mad paper skills... And whaddaya mean you haven't finished anything since you were 12??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tundris In reply to Mizutori [2009-10-08 12:37:24 +0000 UTC]

My Photoshop's history is too short to save me in most of the cases. Then I just need to take the previous save point and then I notice that "Oh, I saved this piece if shit last time an hour ago!"

Well, maybe I'll get used to it too, someday XD

*chough* They really aren't all that mad.
And I mean that I haven't really colored any of those works so that I could've scanned them and put them here XDD All of them are mere sketchs. Messy sketchs.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mizutori In reply to Tundris [2009-10-11 17:02:24 +0000 UTC]

Damn! Another hateful thing.. saving too little! I hope you do get used to it... although, isn't there an option in ps to make your history longer? Maybe in the options around where you can choose to have save states? I have to look.

Haha, sounds a lot better than me anyway! Any paper stuff is better, tbh...
You should upload some of those sketches for the sake of it! I'd love to see pencil stuff, no matter how messy~ You should just color them on ps anyway!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tundris In reply to Mizutori [2009-10-11 18:16:40 +0000 UTC]

I don't even find the options XDD Photoshop is above my English skills. Last time I tried to do something like that, I fucked the brushes up. Though that was a long time ago, when I didn't even know what a word "brush" ment.
...
Hey! Now I found History Options! And what the hell does all these things mean... I don't understand these words even in Finnish Well, I'll try every option.

I hate to even think about trying to scan those sketches with our scanner. It's so slow XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mizutori In reply to Tundris [2009-10-12 21:32:55 +0000 UTC]

Well, let's see if I can help! *goes to her Photoshop history options*

Hm, it appears I have no option to make the history longer... .__. I only have the snapshot options (which is what I keep calling save states btw) and a few more. What Snapshots do is that they save a copy of the document in the history at that point in time, so you can go back to stages from a really long time ago! Much longer time ago than the history has space for, so it's really handy! They pretty much work like save spots in games, lol. But you do have to make sure to save... that's the only catch, haha.

As for the non-linear history stuff... it seriously confuses me. I always end up going to the wrong timeline and screwing everything up! Coupling that with Snapshots is hellish and confusing too! You end up with saves from different timelines and things thrown all between each other and... ACK... @.@ Not recommended, unless you're a wizard! lol. Okay, maybe not... But you should try these anyway and see if they suit you.

Aww. Slow scanners ftl...

Tundris In reply to Mizutori [2009-10-13 16:02:10 +0000 UTC]

Well now I know what were those Snapshots for XDD I gotta start using them. Thanks for the tip

No, NO! Such a word as "timeline" makes my brain hurt so hard. I just... It's too confusing I'm too simple for something like that. Combine that with Photoshop and I'm done.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mizutori In reply to Tundris [2009-10-14 22:03:15 +0000 UTC]

Haha, timelines... I agree, just the sound of them is enough to terrify me for life! I understand wanting to get away as far from them as possible. lol.

Always interesting to see things step by step.

I must say, I rather like number two with just the bands colored in. It looks rather symbolic.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mizutori In reply to moonbunny31 [2009-10-05 08:12:27 +0000 UTC]

I was thinking the same thing about the red bands! XD It's the kind of thing I'd really like to do more, but I never know when. I'm too trapped in the 'either colored or black and white' mindframe...

Thanks for looking! :3
