Description Okay, for the sake of you folks under 40, back when i was a kid LONG before 9000 channels on your cable TV, video games, IPODS, computers, Photoshop 3D Studio max and all that other crap, we had netwoek TV, pencil and paper and MODEL KITS you bought at the store! I built a lot of model its when I was a kid. AURORA Products was well known for their TV and Movie tie-in kits. They did all the Universal Monsters, lots of TV and Movie spaceship and vehical kits, BUT the one kit they NEVER did was the JUPITER TWO! Rumor has it, someone suggested it to some big shot at Aurora, who response was:"It's boring. Who'd want to build it?" And that was the end of it. Aurora did kits of just about every other Irwin Allen TV show vehicle, and made great profits off of them, but never the Jupiter Two. I know a lot of guys who desperately wanted to build a kit of the J2 but until the last few years there was never one available in the USA. ANyway I thought it would be fun to create a FAKE Aurora model kit box for a fictitious Jupiter Two model kit, usimg the Jupiter two artwork I have been working on for the last couple of months. The box style is from Aurora's 1970s period, a period, oddly enough, when Aurora did not offer any kits from any Irwin Allen shows. So it really is a work of fiction on many levels.

YOUNGSTER???? You do realize I am just as old as you are? I still love looking around in model shops. We have a fairly good one in my area, and while I rarely buy anything, I do love to look and window shop. I built a lot of kits(badly)
as a kid. I could afford the kit, but rarely the paint. So I had a lot of white model cars on my shelves. I liked all the MONSTER kits and sci-fi kits too, those were my favorites, but I built all sorts of kits over the years.
Glad you like the faux box for the J2 kit.

The only thing lacking in the J2 box illustration is there was no female derriere to be seen. An obvious oversight...

MJBivouac In reply to DaveMail42 [2010-02-21 17:33:14 +0000 UTC]

And in very small print: "Female derriere not included".

I actually spotted a shot in a third season LIS episode, where Penny(puberty had hit Miss. Cartwright pretty hard by season three) and Judy are in those oh-so-tight silver space suits, and both are bending over doing something, and oh those asses! They could have made Dr. Smith turn STRAIGHT! I know they made something on me go very straight!

Most of the Aurora kits were on the decline by the early eighties when I can remember first seeing a few. There was a series of re-releases though, some time in the late nineties or early double-o's ? I remember that the robot kit was redone, along with the super-hero, Godzilla, and Universal Monster kits.

Too bad that they never took the opportunity to do some new kits in that style like the Jupiter Two here. This is a great mock-up.

On a side note, your work on this has actually gotten me to break out my dvd sets as something to throw on while I'm working on things. It's been fun to watch the series again.

Indeed they were! The last Hurrah for Aurora was during the 70s...the era of the SQUARE box. But they had stopped producing any LOST IN SPACE kits at that time...so my box mock-up is even MORE of a fantasy than it might be. During the early 80s they did re-release some of their Sci-Fi kits...The SPINDRIFT from Land Of The Giants, the INVADERS UFO, the Pan Am Space Clipper form 2001, even the SEAVIEW, but none of the LIS kits were re-released at that time. As I recall, there was not a lot of interest in these re-releases...the STAR TREK and STAR WARS franchises were HOT, but no one seemed too interested in the OTHER old 60s TV stuff.

If my art got you to drag out the old LIS DVD collection, then that is a POINT for me!

Thanks for the kind words...the posters are being printed as I write this, They should be available for purchase before the end of the month. Check out ALPHACONTROLPRESS.BIZ to see OTHER fun books and blueprints from those wacky old Irwin Allan TV shows.

aw this takes back to a simpler time, when my mom left my dad, and the courts made me spend the weakend with him. He strapped me into a chair and made me watch ever episode of this and all in the family. I believe thats a form of torture today.

Though the words take up space, it is worth it! But is there a way to frame the white Jupiter Two with a black outline, like a superscript?

You've got the box art perfect. I built many an Aurora kit and always found "Fit The Box" scale to be a royal pain in the butt. Ah well, the joys of youth. Thanks for a great little side trip down memory lane.

Yeah, I loved all those Aurora genre kits when i was a kid. I didn't care much for the military, aircraft or car kits. They were not very good. But the figures and sci-fi stuff was a blast.

I was very partical to the ship models. The U-505 and the Coast Guard icebreaker were actually quite well done kits.

I never made any of the figurines but I've seen them in display cases at hobby shops. Pretty impressive quality there.

And it loooks like the real deal.
Very detailed and nice colours.

The only model kit I've ever made was a TARDIS.
My brother is mad on Warhammer though.

Ha Ha! I guess I wish I was a kid again as well. I loved model kit box art! Still do! I know I bought many a model because of the artwork! Those guys were incredible artists! There is a NEW JUp[iter Two kit just made available recently, from Mobeius. I did a little reasearch and learne dthat the box artwork is a Photoshop composite of an actual Death valley photo and a photo of a built up kit itself. The art looks fine, but it's not REAL painted art ike I enjoy. So I feel a bit smug that MY J2 painting is the real McCoy.

MJBivouac In reply to nunheh [2009-12-29 03:41:31 +0000 UTC]

Ha Ha! My Mom got all freaked out at news stories about kids sniffing glue so she insisted I use the Lemon oil based glue that was more healthy, but not as good at gluing plastic parts together. Frankly, the regular airplane glue kind of gave me a headache. I never wanted to sniff it. I never got into drugs, cigarettes or booze at all! But my Mom is a reformed alcoholic and smoker...go figure!

nunheh In reply to MJBivouac [2009-12-29 04:50:48 +0000 UTC]

At the time I had no idea about glue sniffing, and when I did I feared it would harm the cognitive processes...so I opted for Acid, alcohol to encourage rage, and opiates and valium to calm the rage.
those vices however led me down a thorny path that I have no desire to re-explore.

nunheh In reply to MJBivouac [2009-12-29 13:22:46 +0000 UTC]

No. No good times. Incarceration in a number of state sponsored institutions, scars, broken friendships, relationships, and not even mentioned by my family, such that when I got sober everyone was surprised that there was another son. Only my brother maintained something for me, because on his road to succesful lawyership I imagine he said to himself "There but for the grace of God go I."

But it all did leave me with a healthy fear of where drugs and alcohol could take me. And the knowledge that if I don't take the first drink I won't get drunk!

Been sober for a long time. I don't regret any of it, and if nothing else all of that fueled writng and painting, and gave me a perspective I wouldn't have otherwise. I don't think it was luck or unluck...more like the only path possible for me, both the troubles and the escape from them. And the opportunity to do something useful in helping others who have fallen into the same syndrome.

Funny, I grew up resisting most of my urges, as I thought it was the right thing to do, or maybe I was just too scared to follow through with them. I was a virgin until almost 30....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nunheh In reply to MJBivouac [2009-12-31 04:22:40 +0000 UTC]

That's why alcohol was invented...to kill fear. It allowed me to lose my virginity early, although in fact I really didn't care much, punch the bully in the mouth for no other reason than he was there, pull a knife on my father the last time he went to hit me, but until I took my first drink at 12 I was a little ball of fear. And when the little 12 year old first drank a grand vision came to him: "I'm not afraid of anything." So I bumbled up to the age of 31 never once thinking about the price I was paying. By then it was very close to being too late. I was 'lucky' to find a way out. Or better it found me.

To this day, though, when someone brags about their sexual exploits, I always say "Who cares? It doesn't do me any good." Or..."That's funny....I didn't feel a thing." Most of the things we take pride in or are ahsamed of are usually of little or no importance. What is important is giving at least one cat a good home.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MJBivouac In reply to nunheh [2009-12-31 08:55:18 +0000 UTC]

Well, you certainly won't hear me bragging about any sexual exploits...don't have any to brag about. And bragging about sex with your wife is like bragging about the great gas milage you get in your Ford Focus...who cares!?

nunheh In reply to MJBivouac [2009-12-31 18:26:54 +0000 UTC]

I'd like to brag, but if I don't even care what would it sound like? And I've taken a vow of charity or is that chastity and serenity has become far more important than compulsion.

Been through a couple of common law marriages. It's probably a combination of me and the times, but I rarely see a "relationship" working out anymore. Especially my own! I think it demands a level of self-sacrice that is antithetical to the modern world.
