A very nice robot, and an interesting toy as well.
So when the wheels move, the cog connects to a second cog under the fly wheel and makes the disc spin.

The only reason Hypno-Disc got less destructive were two reasons. Other opponents had better armor, and Hypno-Disc still relied on the weight of their weapon. I did mentioned bots like Supernova and Disc-O-Inferno being better, due to them having adapted to belts and/or chain drives. Hypno-Disc relied on the weight of their flywheel, and the bevel gears underneath to get it going. Plus, there was a vast difference within the speed they had.

I bring the facts. If I remember correctly, on 1:4 or 4:1 gear ratio, giving it roughly a top speed of around 900 to 1000 rpm. The rest were using chain drive or belt driven, giving them a lot more speed, ranging from 2500 to 3000 rpm on horizontals, while a few of the verticals were clocking in... 4000, 5000. I do know Black and Blue each had 6,000 rpm drums, but that was Series 7. Big difference in speeds as you can see.
Also, for that gear, it's around the 55 second mark: youtu.be/zqNYtI-0O2s?t=54

Similar concept, yes. We saw how effective it was in 3 and 4, but around 5 and 6, it just... lacked it. Every other spinner was able to outclass the hypnotizing spiral with pure carnage. Ripping pieces and chucking them out, tearing bots in half, the whole ten yards.

Carbide wasn't even meant to be as successful as it was either. The 2016 Cobalt was the main focus for the team during that time. Carbide was just thrown together for the event, and it would ironically become one of the most destructive machines in Britain. Up there with the likes of Pulsar, it was off to the races with teams making these nasty spinners. We all saw what Big Nipper could do in Series 10 as well.

Wait Cobalt from Battlebots?

IceandFireGuy In reply to MJLegacy [2020-01-20 04:59:14 +0000 UTC]
Yep. Cobalt was the main focus during 2016, but we all saw how its time was cut short. Carbide was essentially spare bits and bobs from Cobalt, painted black and green, a more standard bar, and... wouldn't fail to at least make it to the championship. Strangely enough, Carbide was the third and final robot to KO its opponent in the final. The others were Panic Attack pitting Cassius, and Chaos 2 flipping Hypno-Disc before the self-righting arm was in.

I act a bit like a guide to inform a few others on a few tips and such. I just didn't have anything clever to say for Tornado.

Expecting it, I see. I just didn't have many tidbits for it. I was going to mention it being the spawn for the awful Storm 2, but you mentioned that. I hate how cocky the team of Storm is. They're like we don't need weapons to win... you wonder why the series was cut off, that black box came around and ruined it. They even came out of retirement for Series 8 and still tried that strat. They also entered into Battlebots with Photon Storm, quite literally Tiberius 4 from the live events, the one Sam Smith of Team Carbide originally had. Ironically, one of the Tornado team members joined them for that outing.

I don't get what was bad about Storm 2. Tornado was a ramming bot and no one complained about them.

IceandFireGuy In reply to MJLegacy [2020-01-20 05:18:53 +0000 UTC]
Well, for me... rambots are essentially cheap ways to qualify for events. They were all over. Nowadays, unless you got into Robogames, got to put some kind of weapon that was impressive enough to get in. Watching Storm 2 during Series 8 was like watching paint dry, and I had more fun doing that. They're just so... nerve pinching to me.

Well to me its not about fancy weapons if its brute force affective enough then so be it. Beside they added a lifting arm in the 7th Wars what do they want.

IceandFireGuy In reply to MJLegacy [2020-01-20 05:29:32 +0000 UTC]
Well, there was a whole Storm 2 controversy going on after the New Blood tournament, hence why the active weapon rule was influenced. Too many bots were either copying each other, or coming in with no real creativity to them. There was actually a whole written article for their controversy being on the show in Series 7.

Man its stupid. Can't you people just leave them alone. Its not like they did something illegal. British people always trying to tell us what we can and can not do bow before an old hag.

IceandFireGuy In reply to MJLegacy [2020-01-20 05:40:04 +0000 UTC]
It was more the company that wanted it to happen. Mentorn, who held the original seven series, didn't want another controversial box taking the crown, after the cage Tornado brought to the finals... It was fairly obvious they had enough of it, and it would've been better to just kick the team out instead of go through all the bits and bobs on TV. Personally, I don't care, but they would later go to Robogames in 2008, five whole years after this mess. Weaponless robots can actually still qualify, but it looked like their luck of not using a weapon didn't help them against Sewer Snake, one of the better wedges during the down time.

Ah right. Fun fact, Alex Mordue has actually come out of the retirement from robotic combat. He's not competing with a big heavyweight though. Instead, he controls Saw Loser, a 3 lb vertical disc on an arm, kind of similar to Whiplash.

Surprisingly, Firestorm is still the only front hinged flipper to get an OOTA, as well as being the only robot that was able to flip Mr. Psycho. That's not an easy task, either. That thing weighed 1,653 lbs... talk about someone needing to be on a diet.
