I really think Operation Javier should have been a full game and part of the main series (same with Umbrella's End from Umbrella Chronicles, really) It seems like they took these really important events from Resident Evil's history, and put them as sub-chapters for a couple of sub-games.
And it was nice of them to bring back the Veronica virus and explore it a bit more. That's what they should do - come up with more stories about the viruses that already exist in the RE universe, not just keep creating more weird viruses in each new game.

I agree, I think any of the canon bits in both of the Chronicle games for the Wii could have been stretched out and put into their own games
Operation Javier should have absolutely been made into a full game and not a rail shooter. I thought it was a compelling story line and it didn't need to be bogged down with flashbacks to the older games that were basically just eye candy with no soul to them.
the horrible remakes of the original games with the exception of Hunk's 4th Survivor scenario should have been left out of the Chronicles games. I mean really they served no other purpose than to confuse new players and mess up what was and wasn't canon from the series. I also felt they did a huge injustice to the originals.
I mean if they were going to bother making a remake of RE0, RE2, RE3 and Code Veronica X they should have done it properly like the Game Cube Remake of the original Resident Evil.

Yeah, the chronicles did make a mess of things. For example: RE1 leaving out Barry Burton (but we still get to read files about him?) and Lisa Trevor shows up in Wesker's scenario, even though she was absent in Chris and Jill's game. And those extra levels with Rebecca were utterly pointless - a level where Barry is sneaking around contemplating his family and betraying his comrades would have been far better. There are so many things they could have done there - i mean, since RE1 only showed Barry with Jill and Rebecca with Chris, they could have ended it with all 4 of them escaping together and shown how the mansion incident really ended...
And RE3, they had Jill and Carlos going through the subway and ending with the police station. Nothing about Nicholai (even though there are files about him?) and no hospital level, and no further mutations for the Nemesis.
My ideal Umbrella's End would have been a game that brings ALL of the playable characters together (like Outbreak, but with the main characters), and have us organizing teams to take down Umbrella's facilities, with Wesker doing his shit in the background.

That's what I mean. They edited out entire chunks of the story lines in the originals just to make them fit that stupid rail shooter motif. It was all action and no substance for the most part.
On top of that they kept jamming Sergei into every single scenario for no goddamn reason which just made the story weird and stupid.
Not to mention the fact that Sergei's insane claim of every tyrant being based on his DNA flies in the face of the story presented in Resident Evil: Survivor and the second Wesker Report, both of which are still considered canon story lines.
So either Sergei was insane in making that claim or he only meant the silly disco goggle tyrants he owned or the writers are just sloppy idiots and didn't make things clear.
Also I find it ridiculous that they changed the scenarios around in Darkside for RE2 to fit the Claire A, Leon B scenario since for decades it was the opposite that was considered canon.
I honestly find the Wii rail shooters insults to the whole franchise.
And I agree totally with you. Umbrella's end should have been what was left of the STARS coming back and finishing the job. Same with RE5. Jill, Chris, Barry and Rebecca should have been the ones to finish off Wesker.

I really wanted to see an updated animation of when Annette shoots Ada and she falls from the catwalk. That scene was much more dramatic in the original RE2.
If they wanted to make a rail shooter just for the sake of having a RE game on the wii, I'd rather they just came up with an entirely fresh spin-off. I think they tried to squeeze too much into the chronicles, like they ALSO wanted the games to serve as an update to fans who are new to the series.
And yes, I was pissed off about how Wesker met his end in RE5, with Sheva taking part in his final downfall. Jill, Barry, Rebecca or Claire should have been sticking the knife in him, not some new chick who has no history with him whatsoever.

Yeah they completely boned that whole thing. You never get to talk to Kendo, meet Brad Vicker's zombie... it was just a shitty joke.
Honestly since they are so into remakes they should have remade the two first person shooters they originally had in the series. Can you imagine if they updated Resident Evil: Survivor and Resident Evil: Dead Aim with those graphics and expanded the storylines? They would have been epic and it would have made me want to buy a Wii just for them alone.
Exactly! If they had to keep her in the game Sheva should have left with Josh when he went for help and Chris and Jill should have finished the job.
It would be like watching all the original James Bond movies and instead of Bond finally killing Blofield some useless ass-hat he just met did it.

I only ever watched the cut scenes from Survivor. The story seemed interesting, it just had all that hideous voice acting, so yes, a remake would be welcome.
It seems that whenever they come up with a pairing in RE games now, they HAVE to stick with it, so Sheva couldn't leave Chris' side all the way through RE5. Same with RE6 - you get the same partners all the way through their respective games from start to finish. It just makes the story feel forced and unconvincing. At least when you play Revelations, they do eventually start mixing and matching different characters with each other, and it ends with Jill and Chris - THAT's what they should have done with RE5.
π: 0 β©: 1
MJMJR In reply to davidlucas [2013-06-23 11:30:44 +0000 UTC]
Trust me. As bad as the acting and graphics are the story line is pure, classic Resident Evil. It's a mystery wrapped in a disturbing horror story. When you find out what Umbrella was really up to on that island it makes Rockfort Island look like a summer resort.
Yeah but with RE6 you really didn't have a choice since anyone you attempted to rescue died horribly and the individual stories took so many different pathways. Plus they did do mix-ups here and there when the teams would cross paths so I don't fault them for that especially since the AI is so good in that game.
I was actually pretty satisfied with RE6. My one major complaint about it were the glitches. They were especially bad in the lab with the exploding Roomba robots and that fucking boss Chris and Piers have to run away from.
RE5 is a wholly different story. The AI is such a goddamn anchor around your neck that its next to impossible to get anywhere without it fucking you up or getting itself killed. I only wish I could have gone solo in that game and ditched the partner since she was next to useless. Never helped when I needed it, never followed orders no matter how basic and clear the commands were and it constantly jumped in front of me whenever I was shooting an enemy.
I haven't played Revelations yet so please don't tell me anything about it

I'll have to try the Survivor games myself some time.
I won't go any further with Revelations, but I thought it was pretty awesome.
RE6 really disappointed me, though. Too many bosses that can't be killed, and too many chase scenes. We're gonna have a car chase in this level. And a bus in this level. and a train in this level. This part will have helicopters chasing each other and this level will have a bike chase. all these chases and running from things got on my nerves, there weren't enough levels where you can just go around killing zombies. Those creatures that come apart and their body parts chase you everywhere - ALWAYS in a level where you have to collect 3 keys - was just dumb. And we didn't actually get to see Chris and Leon fighting BOWs alongside each other. They have their brawl, which was in the trailer, and they talk a couple of times on the phone, that's it. Two legendary RE heroes finally in the same game, and there's bugger all interaction between them. Even Sherry and Jake got to fight alongside them a couple of times. Whenever the game got to China, I just stopped giving a fuck what was going on, it was like I was just pressing through to the credits. I was very unsatisfied.
Oh well, sorry for my rant!

eBay has a bunch of them. Its probably one of the easiest RE games to find and one of the cheapest.
I hope to get Revelations soon. I just have to sock away as much cash as I can for a trip I plan on taking in the fall.
Well they were going for that whole "Nemsis" vibe but I do agree it went overboard with the chases.
I was irritated by those rubber bastards as well. Still most levels where you face them had a meat grinder or shredder nearby so as long as you could lure them to it you could turn those annoying pricks into hamburger and have a pretty easy go on the level.
I agree there could have been more of a team up between Leon and Chris but with the way the storylines were going I think more people were interested in him interacting with Jake considering the drama factor.
Still who's to say the next one won't have them team up in some fashion? I mean enough fans have demanded it so it will happen eventually.
Its okay, feel free to rant

lol! well i thought they kind of messed up Chris anyway. He sunk into a depression after losing that bunch of rookies, when he seemed to be functioning just fine in RE5 when his oldest partner Jill was supposedly dead. And the way he flips out every time Ada shows up, when Chris always seemed pretty level-headed every time he went up against Wesker. I was like, when did Chris Redfield turn into such a drama queen? And when he says he wants to hand in his gun and let Piers take over, I was thinking Hey! Chris is gonna go into retirement and they're finally going to bring a piece of Resident Evil to a close. But nope, Piers gets killed and Chris gets back to business as usual.
I think the only good thing about Chris and Piers' scenario is that it does make a nice change to have two members of the same sex working together. RE rarely gives us a brothers-in-arms kind of situation, so you get to see a different side to the characters, instead of it always being a dude and a chick. Hopefully RE7 will find a way to bring Jill and Claire together.

MJMJR In reply to davidlucas [2013-06-24 20:41:58 +0000 UTC]
Yeah but you have to consider how old Chris is now in the series and how many people he's lost as partners, friends and teammates. That's a shit ton of death to have on your shoulders. Plus when someone like him is in command the deaths of the men under his charge will hit him harder than most because he was responsible for them.
Okay go back to Resident Evil 1. Did you ever fail to save Rebecca and she gets killed? Chris loses his fucking mind and starts punching the floor crying her name. She was a rookie, he barely knew her and her death affected him. And look at how long he chased after Wesker to avenge the STARS deaths. That's someone who gets affected by loss.
Also Resident Evil 5 is flawed in every sense of the word. It was poorly written and executed so you can't site his lack of emotion in that as him since it essentially wasn't him at all. Chris and Wesker were both done completely wrong. The developers didn't even bother to make them match up with all the previous incarnations descriptions. Their heights were wrong and Chris was given brown eyes instead of blue like in every game before this and they made him the size of a fucking baby gorilla.

davidlucas In reply to MJMJR [2013-06-24 21:26:30 +0000 UTC]
Thing is, if they did end it with Piers taking over Chris' position, I would have been all right with that. He was roughly the same age as Chris was during the mansion incident (In which Chris was one of the first people to ever encounter BOWs), only Piers and the other youngsters have grown up as soldiers in a world where Bio-hazards have become a common threat, and Piers has turned out to be the best of all of them. Then they fucking let Piers get killed, and so Chris ends up losing yet another partner (as if he didn't feel like a big enough twat already with evil Ada reminding him of his track record) OK, RE6 had a big cast and SOMEBODY had to get killed off, but I felt pissed about losing Piers, especially considering how frustrating his game was (I must have restarted a hundred times playing through most of his levels)
And when Chris looks guilty having told Jake about Wesker. It's like "You know that father who abandoned you and became a psycho who betrayed and killed just about everybody who trusted him, collected deadly viral weapons, beat the crap out of my sister and turned my partner against me? Well, i killed him. My bad."
But yeah, RE5 did feel more disconnected from the rest of the series than any other game. Revelations kind of got things back on track for me, whereas RE6 started off well, then went tits up.

MJMJR In reply to davidlucas [2013-06-25 11:25:27 +0000 UTC]
I agree, Piers was a great character and I didn't want to see him die but at least Piers death was well done, it had a huge emotional punch and he went out like a bad ass. How many characters really get to do that in the series? Not many. So I was satisfied that he went out fighting and saving lives and not in a lame shock value way.
I would have loved to see him continue on in Chris' stead but Piers at least went out as a hero and saved Chris in the final battle and destroyed that giant neo-umbrella freak in the process.
I didn't see it as Chris feeling or looking guilty. Chris was owning up to a son that he killed the man's father. That's not an easy thing to do no matter how much of an evil shit the father was. And you know that Jake has tremendous anger and Daddy issues just from playing the game up until that point so Chris is pretty brave for what he did and when he did it.
RE5 played like Medal of Honor: Africa. Not one part of that game felt like Resident Evil. It felt like a horrible fan fiction that I couldn't escape from.
I will say this. The only two things that irritated me about Resident Evil 6 was Helena didn't pay for her crimes and got a free pass after essentially helping murder the fucking President and an entire town.
The second thing were the glitches. Those goddamn robots in the lab that kept exploding would literally "glitch teleport" every time I shot at them and then gang rape me with explosions while my partner was entering in the codes.
The other glitch that drove me fucking bananas was the running bit with the final boss in Chris and Piers mission. No matter how fast we would get to the platforms where we would have to lift and pull one another up the goddamn game would still kill us even if the one character was pulling up the other already before the stupid monster's hand got anywhere near the platform.
π: 0 β©: 1
davidlucas In reply to MJMJR [2013-06-25 11:48:28 +0000 UTC]
I don't think I encountered any glitches (I'm on PS3) I just found the game frustrating enough as it was.
That giant hand chase was the biggest cunt I've ever met in a Resident evil game. I was playing as Piers, so he has to jump up using Chris, then pull Chris up, and it happens quite smoothly, so I don't know if it will be any different when I play as Chris. The worst bit was when you slide under the pipes or something, I kept timing it wrong, so my character ended up bending over and crawling through like an old lady, and of course then you've got no chance. and the forced camera angles are no help here at all. You're running for your life, you've only got a few seconds to avoid instant death, but the game designers want to force you to look at their impressive animation of a monster crashing through the scenery. Fuck that shit. If they want to do that, just give us a cinematic and be done with it.
One of the things I disliked the most about RE5 was those Indiana Jones style ruins. They were ridiculous. Sure, RE has had statue and gem puzzles with the odd boulder trap since day 1, but that was taking it a bit too far, they even nicked the sun mirror puzzles from Zelda. Then what does RE6 do? Sticks an ancient tomb underneath the city, complete with a bloody mining cart chase. Why not discover an alien space ship buried down there while we're at it? Shit, I better not say that, they might just put in RE7.
π: 0 β©: 1
MJMJR In reply to davidlucas [2013-06-26 10:53:54 +0000 UTC]
Were you doing Co-Op online or playing by yourself? Because I noticed when I played online with my girlfriend the glitches seemed to get more intense and crazy.
Brother I was doing the same thing. I was Piers and my girlfriend was Chris and we went through that same shit. It took us almost an hour to get past that part because of that stupid hand slapping the platform away glitch. Also one of use would crawl instead of slide for no reason half the time no matter what we were doing.
In RE6 I really disliked that they would force your character to look in different directions while your in the middle of shit like running for your life or in the middle of a battle. Like I didnβt need my perspective changed while I was running just to see the plane Leon and Helena were on crashing into Japan. I knew it was going to fucking crash because I was already on it. And I could hear it quite clearly as I was running so I donβt need to have my head forced up to see it from the ground.
I didnβt particularly like the sun god ruins with the mirrors in RE5. I thought it was kind of lame. I think the only thing I loved about RE5 was the Hydra shotgun. I used to love when those pricks with the elephant masks would leap down and do a war cry and one shot turned them into fucking hamburger.
But with the mining stuff I knew what they were going for with that. Besides the obvious homage to Temple of Doom mining is a pretty big industry in Africa and the US so itβs not unheard of here at least here for entire mines, equipment and all being left behind underground. Many of the companies here were doing a lot of illegal shit and when a mine disaster or something else would happen to ruin the company they would simply abandon the mines and get the hell out of town.
Also its not unheard of for the older churches here to have catacombs underneath them and if Tall Oaks was a mining town it wouldnβt be too far fetched for the mines to break into the catacombs somehow. Its almost a ready made lair for Neo Umbrella to set up a lab underneath. Itβs a given that if Umbrella is anywhere there will be an underground lab.
Also compare the RE5 mine cart shit to the RE6 one and I think the RE6 one was way better and ultimately more frightening and fun.

I never played online, I've only done single player. My AI partner rarely died, in fact the only time I seem to have lost them is if I tried to run off ahead during a chase sequence without using the assist commands.
That sliding was awkward, because if you didn't press it at the right time and just carried on running into the obstacle, then the character would auto-crouch through. And even when I did pull off the slide, I might end up going off to the side instead of straight ahead.
And you know what else I hate? The way they've taken files out of the gameplay. So you collect them by shooting targets and read them later on at the menu screen when you've finished playing. How shit. Reading journal entries and research notes has always been a part of RE gameplay. It helps ground you into the game's story and give info on the area you're exploring, and also provides hints for unlocking doors and finding essential items. With RE6 there was no time to stop and absorb what was going on, I always felt like the game wanted me to get the level over and done with.

MJMJR In reply to davidlucas [2013-06-26 11:58:33 +0000 UTC]
Try playing it online and see if you have the same issues I did. Also its fun as hell with a friend.
I know, half the stuff like the slide or lifting a partner during sequences like that were so finicky. If you didn't do it exactly perfect in some instances you were completely fucked.
Yeah I have to agree with you on that. I miss finding evidence and files in game and having them add to the game play experience. Like remember how cool it was in RE1 when you read that fucking researcher's journal and then the rotten prick busts out of the closet after you?
Or when you use the journal entries in RE2 to piece together what Chief Irons was really up to?
They really didn't give you much time to enjoy any level for long in RE6. And if you stood still trying to do something you'd get attacked. No matter how much you clear out an area its never safe so you practically have to do every inventory thing on the fly while your partner hopefully defends you.
π: 0 β©: 1
davidlucas In reply to MJMJR [2013-06-26 12:26:16 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, in RE1 the files really gave a sense of horror and tragedy as you find out what these people were going through as the mansion gradually fell to the zombies and freaks. You even got to know what some of the people were like and how they fought for their lives before they turned and tried to eat you!
Even the outbreak games had files in them so you could learn a bit of history and find clues while there were enemies trying to break down the door. Plus you could even press a button to hear your character's response to reading the info!
I'll try online mode when I'm feeling brave, I'm normally really subconscious about playing shit in front of people.
π: 0 β©: 1
MJMJR In reply to davidlucas [2013-06-27 10:25:02 +0000 UTC]
Exactly! The files just added so much more drama to the overall game and gave it more depth. It actually made you feel kind of sorry for a lot of them.
Outbreak was excellent and I find it tragic that they didn't continue that series. As much as I loved Operation Raccoon City I would rather have had that be another chapter in Outbreak rather than a non-canon "What if" game.
You mean self conscious. Honestly play it with a friend. Its much less nerve wracking than dealing with some stranger, especially one of these pricks that plays these games nonstop day and night and then expects you to be up to their level of expertise.

davidlucas In reply to MJMJR [2013-06-27 13:58:56 +0000 UTC]
ORC had some nice ideas, but again, it was too frantic. Don't take time to explore the game, just get the level over and done with. a lot of the time, I ended up going "fuck it" and rushing to the end. I think there's a lot more they could have done with that game, but it ended up feeling very arcadey.
Outbreak is still my favourite. Classic RE style, but with so much more added. Whenever I played the games before that, I was always like "why can't I just use physical attacks? Why can't I pick up a stick and use that as a weapon? Why can't I shoot an enemy in the face when it grabs me? Why can't I move while I'm aiming?" And outbreak basically ticked all of my boxes. And they didn't need to put in any quick time events or car chases or slow motion kung fu fight scenes
Yeah - something-conscious, lol!
π: 0 β©: 1
MJMJR In reply to davidlucas [2013-06-28 10:43:03 +0000 UTC]
Really? I didn't find it that frantic except in the "boss battle" parts of the stages. Like running that zombie gauntlet to get out of city hall or the three way battle with Nicholai, Spec Ops and zombies in the power station. I actually found the USS missions to be somewhat calm compared to the fucking insanity of the Spec Ops missions.
The only level that was all run and gun for me was the last lab and then the Lonsdale Yard but they essentially make it so you can't really do much of anything except run to get the hell out of there because the enemies spawn nonstop.
Yes, exactly! Outbreak had everything the originals should have incorporated into them from the start. Melee, walking and shooting, defense moves, unarmed combat... This on top of very good AI partners with interesting levels and characters that weaved into the fabric of Resident Evil 2 and 3 without rewriting history.
Its okay I knew what you meant

Yes Leon and Krauser go to South America for fun in the sun during Operation: Javier
