I’ve always loved this creepy bastard. In many ways Webstor always came off as the Masters of the Universe version of Spider-Man to me and I wanted to capture that in this piece.

I was originally going to have him rappelling rapidly towards the viewer inside a cavern or down the side of a steep castle but I ultimately decided he would look way more badass swinging down from the top of Snake Mountain Spider-Man style while shooting his laser rifle.

I based his look on the Masters of the Universe Classics toy line but gave him the original figure and Filmation cartoon color scheme. I tweaked his boot designs to look more like shin armor on top of an open-toed leather boot. This just made sense to me since the character is supposed to be very flexible physically and can climb and cling to most surfaces like a real spider.

I also wanted his grapple rope to resemble how Spider-Man’s web lines look kind of chaotic and messy with lots of slacked loops flopping around.

Finally, I just re-did one of the famous establishing shots of Snake Mountain from the original Filmation series and really had fun doing all the textures on this one, especially the ornate carved-out snake, the weird Dark Hemisphere sky and the molten lava of Blood Falls.

Origin: Araneus son of Raknus is one of the last remaining members of an ancient Eternian race of Spider Warriors called the Arachna. The Archna had been driven to near extinction on planet Eternia by the Snake Men during the reign of King Hiss forcing the few survivors to scatter and hide deep underground in Eternia’s cave systems.

Many years after King Hiss and the majority of his warriors were banished to another dimension one of the few remaining snake men on Eternia, Kobra Kahn, was exploring the caverns deep beneath the Snake Men’s former base Snake Mountain when he accidentally awoke Araneus from hibernation.

Despite their races being ancient enemies and perhaps because they were the last of their kinds the duo felt a kind of kinship to one another and struck up a partnership. Araneus took the name Webstor and the duo became criminal mercenaries often in the employ of Skeletor but both just saw this as a way to reach their individual goals.

Unlike most of Skeletor’s minions Webstor isn’t totally loyal to Skeletor nor does he outwardly fear him. Webstor also doesn’t put up with the verbal and/or physical abuse Skeletor heaps on others in his employ and will often respond sarcastically or insult Skeletor if he does the same to him which has earned him respect among the evil warriors as well as from Skeletor.

Webstor has also allied himself with He-Man and the other Masters of the Universe on occasion when their goals are similar. Webstor has great respect for He-Man in particular since he is one of the few beings intelligent enough to figure out how to escape his traps.

An alien race sent a seemingly abandoned spaceship to Eternia to determine the level of intelligence its people were at. If it determined the populace was unintelligent they would invade and conquer the planet.

Webstor and He-Man both arrived to explore the ship at the same time. Webstor called for a truce and the two explored the ship and working together they managed to solve every puzzle inside it. After the final puzzle they were then told of the purpose of the ship and proved to the aliens Eternians were a highly intelligent species and exempt from invasion.

Once the ship left He-Man was so impressed by Webstor's intelligence and co-operation, that he implored him to defect from Skeletor and invited him to join the Masters of the Universe and use his skills for the side of good.

Webstor respectfully declined, saying he knows he can’t beat He-Man right now, but he nevertheless vows that someday he will overthrow Skeletor as leader of the Evil Warriors and perhaps then finally overcome He-Man as well.

Strength Level: Webstor possessed superhuman strength allowing him to lift (press) 10 tons.

Though he can sometimes come across as a savage, Webstor is a stoic and extremely intelligent individual who is gifted at designing and engineering traps as well as complex problem solving. Webstor is also an expert mathematician and strategist as well as an accomplished escape artist and thief.

Webstor, as with all Arachna, is a naturally gifted climber, mountaineer and spelunker whether using his bare appendages or equipment and he can easily cling to different surfaces.

Webstor is ambidextrous has superhuman levels of dexterity in his fingers, clawed appendages and toes. Webstor also possesses superhuman, agility, reflexes, stamina and speed as well as having Olympic level gymnastic and acrobatic abilities which he incorporates into his fighting style.

Webstor is also an expert at ambush warfare making him a master of surprise attacks and stealth. Webstor is also a highly skilled marksman and proficient in the use of laser guns, rifles and throwing weapons.

Equipment and Weapons: Webstor wears an armored vest with a “fast pack” backpack device that can pneumatically launch a grappling hook attached to a strong cable to great heights. Once the grapple is hooked or anchored to a stable object the fast pack will allow Webstor to ascend or descend quietly and rapidly.

Webstor carries a large rifle which he can use to shoot netting, stun blasts or powerful laser blasts.
