Sweet tutorial! Keep 'em coming. I appreciate especially the info on the scrim... I would have just assumed that was a sheet or white muslin... Had no idea there was actually scrim material...

Mjranum, you my dear are a great writer. I'm no photographer, and have no interest it in what so ever. Even so, I couldn't help but get hooked into your tutorial, and on top of it I actually learned a little something about the process of taking a decent picture. This will surely help out a lot of photographers, should they have the brains to come here and read it. Kudos to writing one hell of a tutorial.

GiantBrobot In reply to ??? [2009-04-09 02:30:31 +0000 UTC]

Great tutorial...but for that extra hint of professionalism, try something other than Comic Sans for your typeface...your photography is pretty professional looking, it's a shame to see it degraded by such an immature looking type face...

Otherwise, nice job, lots of useful information for photographers

mjranum-stock In reply to GiantBrobot [2009-04-09 05:56:02 +0000 UTC]

I have no idea how someone can consider a font to be "immature" or unprofessional. That's weird.

It's a font, WTF?

👍: 0 ⏩: 3

GiantBrobot In reply to mjranum-stock [2009-04-09 16:06:22 +0000 UTC]

Hey, typefaces can convey any type of mood or style. Something written in Comic Sans or Chalkboard has a playful, more childish tone to it than something written in Trade Gothic or Helvetica.

Typefaces have character too, just like pictures...

Sorry, I wasn't trying to sound condescending, I know that type choice isn't very important to a lot of people...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mjranum-stock In reply to GiantBrobot [2009-04-09 20:34:33 +0000 UTC]

No, it's OK. I didn't take it as condescending - I was just really sincerely puzzled. I don't read much into a typeface. Actually, I don't think I read anything into a typeface; it's just shapes. Maybe that's me. I've heard other people say that I shouldn't use red to emphasize things but I think red contrasts nicely against grey. Etc.

If comic sans has a more playful tone, then I kinda like that! I'm a playful guy!

I nearly did it in "abbadon" but it would have been unreadable at that size; I was shooting for clarity because I wanted to use a very small pixel size because I had a lot to say.

Maybe next time I'll use something else.

Tolana In reply to mjranum-stock [2009-04-17 14:00:27 +0000 UTC]

I can't believe someone yelled at you for using Comic Sans. Use what you want, dude. The reason design folks consider Comic Sans to be the bane of the industry is that it's has been too widely (ab)used, since being released on every Windows PC for the last 10 years.

Font is not equal font.
Your photographs are really awesome!
BUT! Using Comic Sans and Arial (I think it was Arial) is not justifiable.

Here's a list of the best fonts:

I love you for this

Seriously, it's amazing seeing your setup and hearing tips on how you work. I'm going out as soon as possible and buying some pvc pipe and a big sheet

mjranum-stock In reply to Ayelie-stock [2009-04-09 01:50:03 +0000 UTC]

I humbly (seriously!) suggest you don't use a sheet; buy a scrim on ebay or use white nylon or goretex. Sheets don't transmit light very well compared the the scrim material. Scrims are made of the same stuff as the front of a softbox; I guess I should have said that in my writeup.

themuseslibrary In reply to mjranum-stock [2009-04-09 13:01:48 +0000 UTC]

Glad I'm reading the comments! I was about to go out and get a piece of muslin for the scrim part.

I've also read that using the sunlight covers you put in the windshields of cars works as a good, cheap reflector.

This article from a Do It Yourself Site is just full of awesome lighting hacks (like a airline barf bag as a lighting diffusuer, how to build your own ring flash out of a toothpaste tube and fiberoptic strands, etc): [link]

Thanks for writing this! I'm adding it to my collection of tuts for future reference. It's been so much help seeing the studio setup, especially! My main issue is just not knowing how to use my space and reflect light correctly (as I shoot in a basement with icky fluorescent lighting).

Ayelie-stock In reply to mjranum-stock [2009-04-09 01:57:57 +0000 UTC]

Hmm. How much more expensive would a scrim or nylon/goretex be? I have a rather limited budget You mentioned you found yours for $20 on ebay - is that common or are they generally more expensive?

I wouldn't need much for now, since I do mostly object stock. But in the future I want to recruit some members of my former ballet company to do some model stock with them, and need to find a low-cost lighting solution; I figure a diffuser screen with bright lights behind it would be the cheapest, and I could use the screen to reflect the sunlight on sunny days as well. I'm familiar with scrim material from years in the theatre but had assumed that sort of material was rather expensive.

themuseslibrary In reply to Ayelie-stock [2009-04-09 12:56:45 +0000 UTC]

Actually for object stock, I'd suggest building yourself a Light Tent: [link]

I've been using it to shoot objects for eBay and it's handy for diffusing light and eliminating any background

mjranum-stock In reply to themuseslibrary [2011-05-27 03:19:32 +0000 UTC]

Very good point.

I actually started to make a walk-in light tent - 12x12x12 - but then I realized I was losing my mind.
