I`d propose using black to transparent gradient on the layer mask, to create the effect of increasing distance, which makes the background blurrier and blurrier. It looks more like real camera focus this way Great tut

I used lens blur instead of gaussian and I'm really happy with the results. Please excuse the crazy wings and sparkles, I had to do something to change the stock pic as per their rules.
