Kaitlin is skinny. A lot of times, images of her garner catty remarks about how she needs to eat more, or whatever. Anyhow... I'd been thinking of doing a shot of her sitting in a corner with a plate with a single baked bean on it, but then I realized that it'd be pretty hard to see what was going on. Besides, the nasty remarks are often unsubtle - which means an unsubtle image is more likely to work.

Anyhow, I find it amazing that people are so concerned about whether a complete stranger is fat, or thin, or tattooed, or - whatever. As if it's their business, somehow? Well, if it's my business, I make sure my models are well-fed.

But, on the other hand, you can't ignore the fact that the standards set by the fashion system (and fashion photography) push people, especially young girls, towards a look that can be unhealthy and dangerous (even lethal) to maintain.

It is increasingly clear to medical scientists that clinical anorexia is a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder -- and, like most OCDs, it has a significant genetic component. So, the idea that seeing skinny girls is going to drive other girls to want to emulate them is pretty much debunked. That's for clinical Anorexia.

By the way, I tried to learn about the mortality rate for Anorexia and it is so low that CDC basically does not report it (under 4 dead per year) Which means that Anorexia is less of a public health problem than people slipping and falling down in the bathtub.

Comparing the public health impact of Anorexia versus obesity and - well - if we were being practical about it, we would literally dismiss Anorexia as a concern. Eating disorders are definitely a sad thing for the loved ones and families of someone with an OCD/eating disorder - it's not even a blip on the public health radar.

so? since deaths due to anorexia aren't statistically relevant we should simply ignore the fact that a lot of people suffer from it and the fact that the fashion industry obsessively pushes people into emulating unhealthy lifestyles?

uhmmmm... i think i might possibly sound like some kind of radical chic beatnik after rereading what i wrote.
anyway...
obviously obesity is a (statistically) much bigger problem than anorexia, there's no doubt about it. but i don't think this means that you can so easily dismiss it as a non-problem.
and then, even not considering clinical anorexia a public health issue, the global trend of viewing only almost impossibly super-thin girls sexy, cool, trendy or whatever inevitably creates emulation that may not lead to clinical anorexia but nonetheless is not too healthy (too thin is not much better than too fat) and creates frustration.
being constantly measured with an "impossible" model surely can be one of the environmental components of obsessive-compulsive disorders as genetic components are not the sole causes.

Don't get me wrong, i'm not looking to pin the causes of every evil on "Society" at large or of photographers , i am convinced that most of the time responsibility is completely personal.

As Kaitlin said, the important thing is that people should start to learn to accept and love their bodies as they are, and this is clearly much more a personal issue than "society's fault". But i think that being continually compared with unreachable models doesn't help much.

Exactly. Do you worry about people falling down in bathtubs, hitting their heads and drowning?? Do you worry about the fact that parents and schools, as well as soap manufacturers, all promote bathing? Because (on the average) 11 people die EVERY MONTH from this horrible scourge - as opposed to the 4 or 5 who die EVERY YEAR from anorexia.

So, yes. People make it sound like there are dead and dying anorexics crawling around the sidewalks, blocking traffic. But the reality is that more people die every year from choking on ball point pen caps (7 on average)

I hear you about the frustration aspect, and how many people are unhappy about their body image. But, geeeze, in a world where starvation, war, HIV, etc - are prevalent: screw 'em if they are unhappy with how they look.

I totally agree that it's not healthy to promote an ideal body image so far outside the bell curve, but I think the real solution is to just promote acceptance of our bodies as they are...not to try to swing the pendulum the other way We can learn to love ourselves without bashing or judging others.

I DO have pretty strong jaws...but there was some photoshopping

echomrg In reply to ModelKaitlinLara [2008-07-22 07:01:31 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, i really think that's the problem: learning to accept our (and others' body as they are. Or at least learning to not take what others say about our body too seriously and trying to live in a way that makes us feel good.

ok, now i sound like a motivational speaker
point is to accept what we are

lovely job. I love that you made the food pop out, with it's very bright colors and the rest is very...grey. It really drew my attention, and it gives the whole picture a better feeling. Much better than if it was only in black and white or all color.

Breasts aren't the only thing that make a woman. I haven't seen many men rocking a face, ass, or hips like that.

well, sorry. I don't have boobs either. So I know what you mean, but it was kinda hard to tell, probably beacuse of the lighting and ...well, it doesn't look like you're wearing any make-up...

In that picture you look a lot more like a woman. (I mean that in the best way possible... You're pretty.)

I would certainly hope not. men aren't supposed to be shaped like a woman. XD ...did you think I was a man? Not at all! besides, men are different. you can't possibly compare the two. It's a different kind of beauty from a man and a woman. So, no. No man could be shaped like a woman and be called attractive. It woud be far too strange.

eh, well. we can't all be skinny. It's good you're happy about your body. To be honest, I wish I was thinner. But I'm still working on it through diet and exrecise.

Haha, I understand this completely. Ive got curves and meat and Im still "underweight" for my height, but Im healthy. However, Im still not 'thin' enough. Its one of the reasons I basically told modeling to fuck itself. I dont want to be judge and 'used' for the way my body looks. I happen to LIKE food.

*tilts his head and looks* She's skinny and it looks like she's got a reasonably pronounced case of pectus excavatum ... which based on my own experience probably leads people to believing she's a lot thinner and unhealthier than she is.

Still yeah, people really worry too much about other people's lives instead of their own.
