Description
This is intended as a counterpart to [link]Kaitlin is skinny. A lot of times, images of her garner catty remarks about how she needs to eat more, or whatever. Anyhow... I'd been thinking of doing a shot of her sitting in a corner with a plate with a single baked bean on it, but then I realized that it'd be pretty hard to see what was going on. Besides, the nasty remarks are often unsubtle - which means an unsubtle image is more likely to work.
Anyhow, I find it amazing that people are so concerned about whether a complete stranger is fat, or thin, or tattooed, or - whatever. As if it's their business, somehow? Well, if it's my business, I make sure my models are well-fed.

Hahaha! A WELL deserved DD! I like your words! I like them a lot!
I don't care how attractive stick-thin is, I like my body in health and my organs working more than I care about peoples' opinion of my figure

Two seconds before this popped up on my screen, my wife had pointed at my favourite dish on a picture containing the local recipes in the guidebook for our vacation destination: French fries. There is no coincidence.
Anyway:

I am amazed myself by the fact that you are amazed that some people are so concerned by what a complete stranger looks like. If you really think that, I don't know why you are taking the trouble of showing pictures of perfect strangers to us.
I think that as an artist, you know and you wish that people are concerned, touched, moved by what you're showing them. The problem is that you don't have control over what people will think of it. Sometimes, they see something that is there but that you were not aware of and never wanted to show.
If you had a child that was suffering from anorexia and you were fighting hard to get him out of it, you'd be annoyed by anything coming close to promoting it and saying that anybody suffering or fighting this disease is an ass-hole.
Anorexia is a catastrophic mental illness that destroys not only the life of the person suffering from it, but also deeply affects everyone who loves that person. And if it was only up to them, there is nothing they would like more than to well-feed that suffering person.
So I'm not condemning your work. I am condemning your arrogance in defending your ignorance about it. I think that you should accept that people can be offended by your work and that they might have very good reasons to be offended by it.

Isn't there usually a sort of a divide between the model/subject and the viewer?? When I put up an image of someone, it's just an image. Anyone who knows anything about photography should be aware enough to realize that the image is manipulated by lighting, composition, pose, and - possibly photoshop. For someone to take a look at a photo and feel that they "know" the subject well enough that they are justified in intruding into her life -- that's just presumptuous. And, frankly, weird.

True.
If you had a child that was suffering from anorexia and you were fighting hard to get him out of it, you'd be annoyed by anything coming close to promoting it and saying that anybody suffering or fighting this disease is an ass-hole.
If I had a child that was suffering from Anorexia, I'd be up on the latest research and I'd know that even severe clinical Anorexia responds well to antipsychotic medications used in treating other forms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. I'd also know that the mortality rate for Anorexia is practically nonexistent, and that it appears to be strongly influenced by genetics (like many other OCDs) --- and the last thing I'd do is call someone an "ass-hole" if they apparently knew a lot more about Anorexia than I did.
Last, but not least, if I had a child with a neuropsychological disorder, I'd like to think I would be rational enough not to project my child's problem onto complete strangers.
I am condemning your arrogance in defending your ignorance about it. I think that you should accept that people can be offended by your work and that they might have very good reasons to be offended by it.
If you're condemning my "ignorance" you're on pretty shaky ground - because you don't appear to be particularly knowledgeable about Anorexia. Talk about "arrogance" and "ignorance" - you need to school yourself a bit better, then - maybe - you'll be ready to give me a lecture.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my comment. I must admit I was a little bit quick and harsh with my judgement. I hope you'll forgive me.
I never condemned your ignorance as it is a thing I share with you and every human being.

Z'ok...
It's weird - this is a topic I've gotten embroiled in any number of times (because, as a photographer, I have also sometimes been attacked because "my" models are too skinny) - so I've really had to school myself on the topic. Don't get me started on Body Mass Index...
I ought to do a journal entry that summarizes everything I've managed to learn about anorexia. It's really kind of interesting!!
Did you know that nowadays some hospitals counsel parents who have OCD that their kids will be at increased risk (up to 90%!) of having OCD as well??? It also appears that OCD and autism may be related in the sense that they both appear to result from genetic damage. So, there are kids who are born that are just waiting to express OCD -- and, yes, if they have a playmate that calls them "fatty" they might obsess about body image. Or about lining up their silverware. We don't know enough about this stuff, yet.
I monitor a lot of psych/bio blogs and research (this stuff interests me) and a lot of parents of autistic kids have the same kind of deep (and useless) reactions to autism as the parents of anorexics. These disorders certainly cause serious emotional turmoil!!!

We like to think of ourselves as rational beings, but rationality has very little to do in human behaviour, I believe.

Just because someone you know has anorexia doesn't mean you have to condemn complete strangers that appear to be thin in a photograph, nor does that give you medical knowledge and judgment to do so.
What's the sense of that? Are you saying that any thin model promotes anorexia? What would it help your anorexic loved one if you went on an Internet model bashing spree?
Isn't it very arrogant to think that an anorexic loved one entitles you to post nasty comments towards thin looking models?

Excellent, I love the concept. I'm so sick of people commenting on the weight of complete strangers like they have a medical or psychiatry degree and can diagnose an eating disorder based on picture alone! It's absurd and extremely ignorant that people think they judge a MENTAL illness based on physical looks alone..
That aside, excellent photo!

the idea and concept are very amazing. the photo also is very well done. i just do not like the combination of black and white with color 'though i can see why you might have done it. the model is this classic black and white model (if you want to call her like that) and the food is just very bright and would not work that well in bw.
two worlds clashing together.
just very well done!

I agree with you about selective colorization, honestly. I think it's cheesy. When I shot this, I was thinking "this is a cheesy image" so it seemed like the right idea.

well... i don't know...
I mean, obviously being fat or thin is a personal choice[*], so it's a little silly to say "eh, she should eat more" or "you should lose some weight" (and AshitaUchiha is an asshole, no matter what).
But, on the other hand, you can't ignore the fact that the standards set by the fashion system (and fashion photography) push people, especially young girls, towards a look that can be unhealthy and dangerous (even lethal) to maintain. i.e. being a size 0 means that a 17/18 years old girl has the same waist size that the average 8 years old girl.
And that's a problem.
Obviously anyone can choose to ignore that and look whatever they like, the ultimate responsibility is always individual.
Yet you can't ignore the role that photography (not talking about your photography specifically here, while i know some of her works i don't know enough about yours to """judge""").
M
oh, btw, the picture is great a strong and thought provoking concept and a nice exection. and she's a great model too.
like everyone here i'm wondering how did she manage to keep the funnel up! very strong jaws or photoshop?
[*] obviously unless someone has physiological problems
