Description
Finally finished this... whew. I realize lots of detail is lost because this is a small size version, but in the light of the recent rampant art thievery here on DA I'm kinda reluctant to post anything larger...Oil on illustration board, 15x20".

Well to be honest I wasn't asking for a meaning. I rarely do, if ever. A meaning for every peice of art is for everyone that sees it to find. I looked through the rest of your art and yes I saw that you liked to mix it up, all I wanted to know was rather or not you drew the mural behind the young woman or just used it as a fixed back ground, then put the young woman over it.

Not sure I understand... This is an oil painting. Every element here is painted.

this piece (and everything else you seem to do) is just phenominal! the detail and use of color is incredible. very nice work! how long do you think it took from start to finish?

Thanks! Technically it took a month, but then I only work on a painting a little bit at a time and not every day. I'm slow!

i guess someone could consider that slow but i think that's pretty quick for the amount of detail and thought you obviously put into it!

Very colorful, full of the tribal touch and added the flavor to this painting. I love the careful handling of her hair, the clothes and the background. But I do see her figure lacks some details to her elbow, and a bit of flattening is going on at the forearm... I don't know whether that's intentional. That's what I see.
Overall, good painting.

Foo on me; another dumb technique question. How does your board stand up to the oils? This piece is REALLY spectacular. The detail alone makes my hand cramp, just looking at it....

Thanks! I use thick 40-ply boards (Crescent) and gesso them beforehand. It works out great.

This took about a month from conception (i.e. rough sketch) to finish. I worked more often than usual on it though, sometimes it takes longer because I can't paint every day.
There's no tutorial for this particular painting, but I'm working on an oil tutorial for this one: [link] I will post it here as well as on my site when it's done.
P.S. Thanks for the

Wow, this is amazing what mediums did you use? Acrylics perhaps?
I'm just learning how to paint in Gouache/acrylics now and so far I really enjoy acrylics! However, I'm having troubles getting a dapple shadow from branches without leaves....Anyways, if you could give me a source or useful info I would appreciate it, if not, I guess I'll just experiment.

Glad you like this. I'd love to help, but I don't use acrylics (I hate them, in fact... ) This is oils on illustration board.

Jukeboxhero26 In reply to MJWilliam [2006-03-11 14:42:10 +0000 UTC]
you hate acrylics? Why? I mean, I've only used them and gouache and I've just started learning how to paint but so far I like them better than gouache.

MJWilliam In reply to Jukeboxhero26 [2006-03-11 15:57:02 +0000 UTC]
They just dry too fast for my liking. Oils are much more volatile, that's why I like them better. And gouache is great too, though I only use it for subtle layers under colored pencils.

Jukeboxhero26 In reply to MJWilliam [2006-03-11 17:02:45 +0000 UTC]
That's cool.
Unfortunately, I don't have much experience with different paint mediums like I mentioned before. So far I'm really enjoying the ability to "fix" mistakes in Acrylics. With Gouche I had to be supercareful because mistakes seem to be difficult to correct without further muddling things up since it's water-based and putting more gouache on top would wet the gouache below and mess things up.
Anyways, I love both so far and I can't wait til my Painting Fundamentals class where I get to learn how to use Oils!

Water mediums are the most difficult to work with. They don't forgive mistakes!
Have fun with oils!
