Description
With the increased water volume, a new habitat has formed on Lithos, the Bathypelagic- or Midnight-zone. Now the Central-lake's greatest depth is -1500 meters (5000ft), deep enough that no light reaches the bottom with 500 meters to spare.Even in the pitch black depths, a surprising amount of life exists. Basically all nutrients present here, fall down in the form of marine snow (freshwater snow in this case). This forced a lot of species to attain a bottom feeding lifestyle.
One exception is a species of fairy-shrimp descendant. "Macroanostraca baleenus", can be found at depths of 1000-1200m below lake-level, but they often come up near the surface.
They filter the water with their baleen-like mouth parts, searching for any organic material. It is important to note that in the open waters and at great depths, very little life can be found, only the very top and very bottom is viable for most organisms. Because of that, this shrimp needs to be an indiscriminate feeder, only this way can they thrive.
They don't have many predators where they live so their overall shape has not changed much. They grow 10-15 centimeters (4-6inch) long, females are usually on the larger side. Their eggs are kept in their egg sac usually as long as they hatch.
