It is entirely too easy to make things too even and unnatural. I think this'll definitely help.

I just stumbled across one of your tutorials and headed to your deviantart page. Now I've gone through just about all of them. Awesome stuff! It's amazing that wanky beginners like me have the opportunity to benefit from this kind of generous support from experienced artists. Thanks a lot for doing these sorts of things!

In art school and at work they call the problem on the left "picket fence(syndrome)" because the size and frequency of features is even and uniform, like a picket fence. This tutorial is a good demonstration of the concept, I'll link to it when I'm trying to explain this to others/in critiques.Β

Aaah, this is very helpful! Thank you for providing a simple, but great tutorial I seem to, due to perfectionism, always do the 'not-exactly-random' thing way too often. This was, like aforementioned in the comments, a real eye-opener, so again thanks!

Thank you! I've been wanting to get in to drawing furry characters for a while now, rather than simple designs and pattern based drawings. All of my attempts seem bland, and I believe that this is why. I can't even begin to convey how much of an eye-opener this was for me. So, seriously, thank you!

Nice tutorial! It's the kind of thing that some of us understand instinctively to a degree, but we don't rationalise it the way you do so - when we make a design that isn't as successful as others - we don't know what to attempt to make it better. Thanks for sharing!

Wow, this is so important! I didn't realize I had an idea of "randomness" that made me do exactly the opposite in a drawing. We need more eye-opening tutorials like this, thank you!

This totarial is nice - it sure should help me to cure that even "randomness"

Excellent toot. You put into words and pictures something that's hard to explain. But you nailed it.

This is really good!! This stuff is important in design, and I'm glad you made such a good tutorial. I think one of the reasons I love your art is because it is so balanced like here :3cΒ

So far everything has been things that most tutorials online tend to overlook! Really insightful every time one of these come out.

Brilliant. I find that teaching creative design never quite comes across but you presented it perfectly. And what an unconsidered yet essential part design. Thanks for sharing.

Hmmm I have that problem when I try to stylize a brick wall or similar things. I tend to even everything out too much. It's hard to work against, but I may aswell give it a try.

Cool concept, I really like the idea. I'll have to practice this, my own art is way to 'fair and even'... which may be why I can't draw natural looking distributions. Thanks for this tutorial!

Very informative to the people. An issue a lot of artists don't teach or discuss these kinds of flaws other artists can make when drawing.

Zadomi [2014-04-30 07:24:08 +0000 UTC]

It's a really useful tutorial all things considered, but I felt that it was a tad bit biased since the figures you did for the perfect distribution side look noticeably less refined than the randomly distributed figures. The bias doesn't influence the intended message much at all, but it was still kind of distracting.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mldoxy In reply to Zadomi [2014-04-30 15:46:13 +0000 UTC]

Think of it this way. When you think about what your doing you automatically give it more attention. The only bias was that on the right I had to "think" more about what I was doing. On the left I just immediately what came to mind.Β
