Description
I just finished another sketchbook! I am still using the ratty 5x7 moleskine variety. It's just less commitment. These are still mostly drawn from TV, although since I moved I no longer have a Tivo, so I am having to do more DVD (which sucks on apple - they may make great software on the whole but frontrow + mac remote is THE WORST way to navigate a dvd. Seriously, Steve Jobs, IT SUCKS!).
Most of the drawings represent shows I love and watch repeatedly, but I'm just going to call out The Painted Veil as the worst bit of romantic drivel ever made. It is so incredibly bad that the Bronte sisters would have liked it.

Thanks! Though I have neglected my sketchbook so much the past year, I am feeling guilty.

I don't know who half these people are, but (1) You are very, and let me say again, very talented. And (2) FARSCAPE!!!!!!!! I saw Stark and Aeryn in there somewhere and it made my day.

Aw, thanks? Did you see my all-farscape sketches? [link]
I am a HUGE fan of Stark. #1 favorite character, ever, even above Tennant's Doctor Who and Bowie's Jareth.

Yes! Get a sketchbook! It's better than a journal, and you can look at it a decade from now and realize how much you've learned, ha. This moleskine was 3/$10 I think (the nicer ones are more spendy) so it's not a big investment. And it has a little pocket in the back for miscellaneous doodles from other sources (napkins, mail, company letterhead...).

It's called the "Cahier" line (ie. the "cheap" line) and most bookstores carry them:
[link]
The nicer moleskines (the ones with hardback bindings) have thick, textured sketchbook paper and some even have watercolor paper. The Cahiers have something more like scratchy newsprint - which is good for practicing, because I can't work too long on one sketch or I destroy the paper entirely.

so do you plan to do these, or do you just doodle while watching?
I know I doodle a lot while watching lotr, because I know it so well now, but then get carried away with getting the likeness, and pause it, and then forget to watch the rest of the film...

mleiv In reply to squanpie [2009-11-24 18:32:17 +0000 UTC]
It's a mix of both. Sometimes I have to force myself to draw something just because I need the practice (like the plants), sometimes I'll just be watching a show and suddenly see something I have to draw. The latter happens less often with dvd watching (versus Tivo, which I miss miss miss) because apple+remote can't rewind with any ease or precision. It usually just hangs there for ten minutes and then abruptly refreshes at the beginning of the show, round about when I start screaming and throwing things at the monitor.

heh. that does sound rather annoying... although from the sounds of it the moniter gets soundly punished for it though
I really don't watch much stuff myself, so I often end up trying to draw in lessons - I don't get that much practice drawing people, since staring at my teacher/classmates for any length of time just feels kinda creepy

There's something cartoony/illustrative about all your work I think it's probably your heavy use of line. I like it ^^

mleiv In reply to nnaj [2009-11-24 18:39:00 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! That's exactly what I am going for. I used to do more realism, but I'm trying to learn how to draw comic book people (or failing that, Mucha), so I have been simplifying as best I can. Plus I don't want the sketches to take too long.

There's always two barriers to recognizing the sketches - did I draw the person right and does anyone else watch the same shows I do? Yay for both!

I love seeing sketchbooks on dA. I think you can see into an artist's process, how they go about creating a form. Although some of the artists here really put me to shame, they are so awesome. And I *KNOW* they don't take as long as I do to finish.
