Just because she's dark skinned, doesn't automatically make her African American. Some artist aim for South Asian or Indian. And they do this because the darker skin tone matches with her purple coat as a pony.

Oddly enough... I never personally pictured Twilight as black, but a lot of people seem to humanize her this way. Now, I can kind of see it.
I still picture most of them as Caucasian, though, even though they're not really supposed to be representative of any given race/culture/people -- except maybe Zecora, who is a horrible stereotype.

I'm with you EndlessNight, the ponies' colors do not dictate what their races would be. They could be whatever the hell you want them to be. In light of that, why do people always seem to have a problem with darker skinned human versions? ENOUGH.
How about be celebrate the fact someone is willing to make them more diverse instead of doing what everybody else does which is make them white/asian all the time?
