Description
A futuristic life form and former designer pet, the Prickle Puss was gene-spiced to resemble the Cactus cat, a rather ornery feline of the American southwest legend, covered in hair-like thorns that intoxicates itself on fermented cactus water. In actuality, this is a predator unique to the wooded areas, as well as semi-deserts of the Apocalyptic future--the porcupine cat. This creature averaging 28 to 40 inches, is the result of humans combining cells from a bobcat and porcupine. These felines were original designed to function as a accessory pet combined watch dog--its intimidating look and territorial instincts serving to drive away unwanted animal and human intruders. However, with the environmental collapse and dissolution of human civilization, the species escaped its confines returning wholly to a wild state. Like their other feline relatives, Prickle Puss are extremely adaptable, and have been found in conditions of extreme cold and heat.
The average life span of a Prickle Puss should it survives beyond kitten hood is about two years for individual cats and five years for cats in a thriving colony.
Prickle Puss' quills, or spines, take on various forms, depending on the species, but all are modified hairs coated with thick plates of keratin, and they are embedded in the skin musculature. Old World Prickle Puss (Hystricidae Felidae) have quills embedded in clusters, whereas in New World Prickle Puss (Erethizontidae Felidae), single quills are interspersed with bristles, underfur, and outer hair.
Quills are released by contact with them, or they may drop out when the Prickle Puss shakes its body, but cannot be thrown at attackers, contrary to popular belief. New quills grow to replace lost ones.
Miscellany
*Prickle Puss quills are used in basketry, weapons and jewelry by the Chickarney and Churka People of the Northern Faerie Territories of Toria (formerly the state of California).
*Prickle Puss have become a pest in Manhattan(Nuke York) and are eaten as a delicacy.

If it catches mice, I wouldn't mind its looks.

What do they eat? Do they use their quills to stab prey?

Anything that's smaller than it's head. Their quills aren't used to impale food, only for defense, although in one of my stories I have a mutated leshy that has tendrils along his back, which can be control independently to fight multiple foes. Also these tentacles are armed with spikes that can be used for defense and for snagging food.
