Description
I'm sure many of you that know some American history, know of the Minutemen. They were the farmer/soilder of the revolutionary war that were said to be able to be ready to fight at a minute's notice. I was thinking about where that spirit is today and it dawned on me that it is safe in the hands of the modern firefighter. Ready in less than a minute, these brave souls, often volunteers, leap into danger without question. This September 11th marks four years sence 343 New York firefighters did just that and didn't return. This is a tribute to them and and to all those willing to put themselves in harm's way to save or defend another. This drawing is 18"x24" on smooth bristol and features the helmet of a firefighter along side his boots, staged and ready to go. Fire fighters have a habit of staging their boots and pants so when the alarm sounds, they can literally jump into them, pull up their pants and be off in a flash. The boots and pants are arranged this way in the drawing. I got the photos from a visit to my local fire station. If you would like to visit their website, here's the link. [link]
Special thanks to the Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Department for letting me take the photos I needed for this project.

I do make prints of this piece but I just haven't offered them on DA.
Tell your dad I really appreciate what he and his fellow firefighters do.

Wow, that's just amazing. I mean, just damnright awesome! It's done with so much accuracy that it looks like a greyscale photograph! I saw this and thought you were a photographer, and then i saw you drew it and I was speechless. Seriously though, that's just awesome.

Your work is simply awesome and above all it is very meaningful. I like the photorealistic appearance you achieve by using a lot of darks and highlights. The letters in the helmet are very well done and I know that is hard to do sometimes. And I see, it took you a lot of patience to do it, since working with pencils on such paper size requires an insane amount of time, but it really worth the DD. Good job!
P.D: On a side note, how did you covert that work into digital format to submit it to DA?

so many people are technically great, but don't put any feeling into their art. you manage to be incredibly technically impressive, and yet still have the focus be the deeper meaning. congrats on the well deserved DD.

Thank you. I hope that is the essance of art. Image without meaning is just image. Image plus emotion is art.
