Description
Located in the Dayton Gas Field off Escea's northern coast, Ganymede was one of three Surveyor-class arctic rigs (along with Europa and Io) owned by the Northern Survey group as of 2114.

Built upon a heavy ice-resistant caisson, Ganymede used an angled, encassing superstructure to protect equipment from harsh weather and conditions, incorporating the extraction and offloading facility, cargo storage and accommodation blocks into one structure. The Surveyor class was notable for having a large cargo elevator on its deck, allowing personnel and equipment to reach the primary well on the sea floor, itself a contained structure. Additional wells were connected to--and exploratory operations to locate new wells launched from--this primary hub.

In early March 2114 members of the Escean National League, a right-wing political party listed as an extremist group, seized control of the rig and took its crew hostage, threatening to blow up the platform if imprisoned members were not released.

Unwilling to release the individuals in question, the Escean government initiated negotiations and placed the Guard's Battalion on standby. When negotiations broke down and the ENL members executed the rig's supervising officer, the Battalion was given the green light. Echo Team of First Platoon, Alpha Troop was tasked with the operation and deployed from the ESS Jaeger submarine via SDV, infiltrating the rig caisson and heading up through the structure, systematically eliminating ENL members and neutralising their explosives.

Although Echo secured the rig and hostages, and eliminated the explosive threat, ENL terrorist leader Malcom Darius managed to slip their grasp as he was, at the time of the assault, down in the primary hub. Now aware of the threat, members of Echo, including team leader Ayden Sato, descended to apprehend or eliminate Darius. While Darius was successfully captured, the assault team quickly realised the ENL leader had released and disabled the safety valves for the well, allowing pressure to build to critical levels with no means of averting it. Facing an impending blowout, the Ravens returned to the surface with Darius while remaining topside team members shuttled the hostages into a waiting Thundersnow. In the process of taking Darius to the Thundersnow the well ruptured and the released gas ignited, causing a massive explosion that sheared the walkway between the rig control centre and landing pad, and Echo member Saela Kāgora, who was crossing the walkway at the time, fell over 160ft into the sea.

Forcing Darius into the Thundersnow and ordering it to leave, Sato took the risky decision to follow his squadmate, and jumped in after her. Unconscious from the impact, Saela's helmet visor had also cracked, forcing Sato to connect his own suit via an emergency line to replenish her rapidly depleting oxygen supplies. He then assisted her back to the surface for recovery by VTOL.

While the Ganymede was a total loss the environmental damage was limited, with the ruptured well venting directly into the structure and caisson, preventing minimal leakage into the surrounding waters.
