Ironically I wanted to pursue marine biology and oceanography as I thought it would be fun to have equal parts field work and ‘mundane office work’. I am fascinated by nearly all -ologies.
This piece actually came of I didn’t want to ‘work too hard’ on art. I figured a landscape would be ‘easier’ than figure study of any sort. I like doing landscape stuff because very few judge a tree, etc but everyone can see when a face or figure ‘isn’t right’. But I still like doing faces and figures art regardless.

Memory.
I find that I tend more towards drawing/painting/etc. a 'representation' of whatever more than a 'photo-realistic' whatever.
Not that I don't want to use references for have anything against using them. Quite the opposite! I generally just doodle when I feel it is 'the time' (or when I have the time) and then I just go to it. Instead of being truly studious and at least doing some summary ref checks if not actually topical study (as I should)...
I do occasionally plan better and/or know what I want to do which also means I plan enough to use references.
Like this one:
Which lends a lot of credibility to 'you get what you earn' in time spent studying. Not that it is a "great" pic but it definitely stands out and is a genuine representation.
I'm still building my 'vocabulary' so truly I should use references more. But on an equally positive note I do look at things more studiously than I used to before pursuing art. And it is a bigger 'vocab' than it was. Used to be stick figure pixies after a LOT of work and angst. Now I can usually make a good likeness without too much effort and look forward to doing the 'finer stuff'. A lot like doings scales. In all modes, right?
