Description This is my favorite page. Altered books were first introduced to me last year by my 2D art teacher. This is a page from that first completed book.
-altered book, is where you find an old book at say a yard sale, goodwill, in your basement, that you don't like anymore and you alter it. Use magazine scraps, cut out pages, make drawers, compartments, whatever. It's the best fun you can have while freaking out your english teachers.-
It has a rather humorous touch to it as you can see with the poor boy crying. The pages on the left are layered torn pages sewn together. There's an window with those neato 'do not eat' packets and a nice jiggy with black watercolor and masking tape.

Very nice. I especially like the layering of the pages on the left.
I really have to try that sometime.

Thank you. Yeah, layering is really fun! If you do try it, don't hesitate to share photos! ^^

Yes, thank you.
I would need to start to alter books as a first step. It is something I have never done or rather have never completed. Just the usual holiday little booklet that never gets finished for lack of material/imagination/purpose.

Altered books were encouraged in my high school. They were the only projects I enjoyed. *laughs* But yeah, I've been suffering from the lack of motivation and so forth for what feels like years. So I totally feel you in that department. *cries*

Well, that's good. I never felt inspired nor interested by art classes at school. I can't remember we ever did any 'project'. It was purely traditional drawing and freeked me out.

I wish we had at least covered some basic art history, so that I could notice the difference between Mona Lisa and Brach... ah, ah!

I always dreaded the still lives and landscape drawings. *blech* So I'm thankful that my teachers were a little more 'loopy'? hehe

Weird how they don't cover much art history in school. I've had to pay to learn about it in college. >< But I much prefer it over math any day! *laughs*

Well yes, definitely. At least it is something you can use in conversation with other normal human beings, right ? (as opposed to maths...)

Thanks! ^^ I've been bad about working on art lately myself. I try to pick up my altered books again, but give up shortly after. Boo

Very nice. I love the balance of the colors and the composition. The way things are tucked into the layers on the torn pages is cool. I may try that one one of my pages sometime.
And I love that you've finally figured out what to do with those do not eat packets, haha!

Question for you: How do you manage to photograph the thing so nicely? My attempts to photograph mine were horrendous and I finally had to just go with the less terrible of the several shots I took. Any tips you have for that would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much. I really did enjoy doing altered books back in the day. I find they make too much mess now. (eventually!!) hehe

Well the photo for this one was a scanner, which I wish I had one now. The books I used were small enough so I'd get a nice copy. The black background is actually from not closing it.
I hate how my digital camera has flash. >< When I turn it off it just makes it nearly impossible to take a decent photo without it blurring. So I find taking photos outside in the shade much bearable.

I hope that helps a little. ^^

yeah, the ones i photographed were just slightly too big, like... an inch both ways. Typical, eh?

I might try outside. I'll have to remember in the daylight (which is hard for a night owl)

I have never heard/seen of this style (excepting the other post you have with that). It's really unique, I want to try that some day. ^__^ Now I won't feel guilty if I hated a book so much I wanted to destroy it... ^^ This makes me want to pull out (if they are not glued down) the little pictures in the pockets. I don't think DA does this artwork justice, I think it's something you have to see in real life... I love the writing on the right hand page, it corresponds well with the picture. The little 'do not eat' just adds the finishing (and perfect) whimsical touch... great job!

Woah, this is the first altered book posting I've seen on DA. And it's awesome!
I've been doing ab's for a couple of years now with this group in my town. I like the feel of the black water colors. That's really cool, I'll have to experiment with that one of these days.
Good Job!!!
