Really nicely done, I like the look of fissures in the bark, did you use displacement or just standard bump?

Thank you. I used displacement because the quality is much much higher as that of the standard bump. The standard bump just places an illusion of complexity to your object, the displacement actually changes the geometry of your object revealing much more detail and depth.

Absolutely! I've never used displacement on a tree trunk, it's a great idea.

God I want this program so hard. How long did this take to render?

About 2 hours, but working on the material took about a whole day. You can go into great depth when it comes to the material editor, its good fun. You should definitely get your hands on Vue.

Thanks.
I'd love to get my mitts on Vue. It would be a wonderful addition to my workflow. What I'd love to do is use it as kind of a matte painting generator over which I could paint in some of my fantasy characters like this: [link] Of course I'd have to match up the background to the character but that wouldn't be hard. My real passion lies in painting characters. I'm not terribly fond of doing backgrounds. Vue would make backgrounds significantly easier except for one problem: RENDER TIMES. Ehck. I hope someday those render times get cut down. Then it really would be feasible to shoehorn it into my workflow and it would definitely be worth the money.
Anyway, thanks for the thoughts.

Wow, nice work there Bobbie the Jean. Now Vue does offer a lot of optimizing techniques that can seriously decrease render times without a noticeable loss of quality. You will have to experiment a lot, so go ahead and buy Vue, you won't be dissapointed.

You took the challenge and ran with it! Excellent detail on the texture. Very nice results. You'll have to share your technique with the texture settings.
