here's the connection as i see it: not long before Jesus was betrayed by Judas, he washed all of his disciple's feet (including Judas whom he knew would be the one to turn him over to those who killed him) as an act of service, humility, and love. since L was being kind to Light in this scene, and was then killed by him, it's similar

Ah! I see. Srry for my ignorance; I've never actually watched Deathnote. Is it any good or is it, like, wierd?

well, i didn't used to like anime, but i heard that this one was incredible so i decided to give it a try and was really really glad i did. it's a miniseries, and i'll be honest, it's kind of weird...but it's also super addicting because it keeps you guessing, has great dramatic dialogue, and the way it's animated in some scenes is so fantasic it's cinematic. definitely give it a watch. warning: it takes a few episodes to really get going. episode 25 and the finale are two of the absolute best...but watch it in order or it won't be meaningful!! yeah. annnyyyways haha. sorry to spam you with a long reply. you can watch DN on hulu btw.

Cool! I'll look into it. Hey, one more question, do you know anything about Bleach? The only anime series I've ever avidly watched is Naruto and that was because it had a minimum of wierdness in it.

my younger brother watches Bleach and loves it. i tried to get into it because he wanted me to give it a try. it's basically Ghostbusters (lol) but instead of vacuums, they use samurai swords and instead of advertising and getting hired they are a secret organization. i think the reason i didn't really get hooked on it is because i am 22 yrs old and i have a hard time watching stuff that is set in high-school with kids that young (the main character is a student by day, ghost-slayer by night) lol. it's got ALOT of cheesey humor in it too, which i like, but not that much. so i don't know, you might like it! oh! one thing i wanted to mention about Death Note: one of the reasons it's weird is the main character is the villian and the supporting characters are the good guys...which is opposite of most stories. you hate the protagonist but love the antagonists....haha. interesting stuff. this has been a long comment brought to you by me.

she washed Jesus' feet not Judas'. Jesus (who L is symbolic of here) washed Judas' (Light) and was then betrayed by him

ah alright. i always think of the first foot washing, my mistake. symbolism is so tricky, it can mean so many different things to different people. bit like modern art in that regard.

hey totally understand why you'd mistake that, the bible is long and has repeating themes and yeah i agree with you about symbolism and art, things can definitely be different for different people, or not mean anything to some

I absolutely adore this scene. It's simply so outof character and fangirl-service which is why it's nowhere in the manga.
Anyhow, you did a great job catching the atmosphere of it ^.^

Here's how I interpreted that rain scene. An elaborate final mind game that happens to have a little religious symbolism that may or may not have been intended. One more jab at Light before L goes down, that may or may not have had total malicious intent behind it. L could've been trying to appeal to whatever humanity Light may have still had in order to save himself, or at least shake Light up some. Maybe tease him about how "lonely" he would be without the opposition towards his plans for the new world; remember that for the next few years, Light seemed bored after L's death, and when Mello and Near came in, he mentally harped about how they were far inferior to L and all. "It'll be lonely, won't it?"
And maybe even nudge him about the cold, hard truth that traitors must expect to be betrayed in turn; remember that all of Light's allies towards the end died, turned on him, or otherwise became indisposed, thanks to Near and Mello's antics that of course could not have happened if it weren't for what L had set up before them. Shoot, remember when L offered earlier that Light could take over for him if something happened to him, which of course, he does? If Light said yes and accepted his title, that'd have meant he was Kira and putting on an act. Not only that, but in the bigger picture, L made it so that if he were to die, Light would be chosen as the next L and then L's successors, knowing that L was dead, would zero in on whoever claimed L's title as Kira. In short, by making him the next L he's made him a target. "It seems like it's all been worked out."
I could attempt to tie in the religious symbolism, but I don't think it would work. You know how Jesus Christ washed Judas Iscariot's feet to distinguish which one of the apostles would betray them? Well, to be frank, neither L nor Light could accurately fit Jesus's description. They both look more like Judas, to me. So it's one Judas to anotherβ¦ "It's the least I can do to atone for my sinsβ¦"
Kind of like when Pontius Pilate washed his hands before sentencing Jesus to death, in a vague way. So he would symbolically be not guilty of staining his hands with the blood of an innocent man. But here, like I said, it's very vague, given Light's innocenceβor lack thereof. So, I'm not going to bother firmly tying in religion to it. They're still just humans, after all. Humans who get in way over their heads, but humans all the same.
If there's any big difference, it would be that L knows his shortcomings, is aware that he's a bad person, whereas Light thinks himself incapable of doing wrong.
Have I mentioned that you're a helluvan artist? Seriously, it's beautiful.

You might be getting some things mixed up. Jesus said that Peter would deny knowing him three times before the rooster crowed. Judas was to betray him. Pontius Pilate washed his hands at Jesus's trial so he wouldn't be guilty of executing an innocent man.

Magicaru In reply to gdpr-4033231 [2011-09-03 20:47:52 +0000 UTC]
yeah but if i remember correcly...Jesus din't wash Judas' feet.....he said that he would be betrayed but the reason he washed the apostle's feet was to give them a lesson about humility....but it wasn't Judas's feet he washed.

Oh, he washed his feet. The fact that Jesus watched his traitor-to-be's feet was a point he was trying to make about humility and forgiveness.

I cried a bit when I saw this scene. It hurt me that L was subjecting himself to a belittling act because he knew that Light had won.
Anyway, the lines and lighting are very nicely done here.

When I watched the anime, this scene just creeped me out. It seemed to me as though a fan girl got hold of the director's neck and forced him to do this scene just so these two could get a really awkward, almost romantic moment! As far as I remember, it didn't really... accomplish much, did it?
π: 0 β©: 1
moni158 In reply to YraelMogget [2011-09-03 12:47:52 +0000 UTC]
The scene never struck me as awkward, it has an almost dream like surreal quality and the symbolism was so vivid it really stood out to me?
I find it sad that people can't see past silly things like thinking its fan-service or romantic and see what the animators where trying to portray

YraelMogget In reply to moni158 [2011-09-05 08:29:42 +0000 UTC]
I tried to see past it, but my gut response was just feeling awkward and I'm sure a lot of other people felt it too. Also, I'm not religious, and the fact you've named it Judas makes me assume it's got some religious undertone - the scene, that is. So I would have missed that.

But if they ended it there, Near and therefore indirectly L couldn't have beat Kira
Like, L didn't really win,
but at least by having the rest of the series, Light didn't, either.

Sayuri--Y--Lily In reply to Tama-Victorian [2011-09-04 12:00:48 +0000 UTC]
So basically Light loses and so does L.
Making the winner in the end Near .

Tama-Victorian In reply to Sayuri--Y--Lily [2011-09-04 15:57:24 +0000 UTC]
I think so...
Because L's ultimate goal was for Kira to be brought to justice at the hands of the law, so by Ryuk killing Light, L lost too.
Sometimes I sit and analyse this series 8D
