Anorthyte's sharp eyes once again were the talk of the Tribe, though this time for far different reasons than before. Before, Anorthyte had spied omens and fish - today, the young loon spied danger. The foul smell of the sickness that weakened the ancient trees permeated the air, and in places, made eyes water. Scent could not warn them - but though Anorthyte's eyes watered too, the white-thumb was no less attentive.

Anorthyte spotted movement in the trees - unnatural, wavering movement, and with it, a fresh wave of that foul stench. The loon uttered a cry, and the warriors of the Tribe responded - just as the wavering wraith responded. Anorthyte was uncertain if there was aggression in those jerking, empty movements. The creature seemed almost lost. But Anorthyte kept distance just the same - for the very same foul muck that infected the trees was dripping from the creature's pale face.

The white-thumb watched as those of the Dim Coat drove the creature steadily away. The elders worried in hushed tones among themselves - they had not expected these dangers when still so close to the clean white forest edge.

They praised Anorthyte for attentiveness, willingness to rise before dawn. But in truth, Anorthyte had only risen so early hoping to catch a glimpse of golden sunlight breaking through the trees. Gold was a good color in this world, no matter what the elders said - the gold of fire, energy, wonder.

Anorthyte knew, or suspected, that there would be very little gold where they were going.

It could certainly be better, but it's fair for only one day's work, I think. Working with only one color was surprisingly tough. Didn't mark this as mature - figured it'd be fine since we've got a herd of gloopy and boney grabby-cats wandering around already.
