Description Spontaneous 30min painting that came to be when I set up the Photoshop at a friend's computer. Painting scenes like these is surprisingly calming to do actually
Also I had to juggle with the german names for things and they are as hard to tell apart as they are hilarious - "Merge with Layer Below" is called "Mit darunterliegender auf eine Ebene reduzieren"

Hmm... Hard to tell what part of it confuses you. General tips could be
1. Don't use saturated colors except for bright highlights. Best keep the whole palette muted until you dive in with brush modes (in photoshop).
2. Use brush modes! Overlay and Hard Light make awesome lighting effects, color dodge makes things glow. But you should best experiment with different brush modes before you listen to any advice. These are also generally meant to be used with extremely smooth airbrush type brushes.Β
3. When painting on one layer, always paint from the back to the front! Landscapes are really forgiving since you can always start with the same thing: Mountains and sky. And really once you've put down something its much easier to build on top of it.
4. Use big and chunky brushstrokes! A quick 30min painting doesn't really need any detail, and once you look closer at this one it becomes apparent that most of the "detail" just comes through the texture of the brush rather than me actually putting down the details.
5. Work with coincidences! Those happen all the time, some of them turn out shitty, and some of them forge opportunities you can learn from. Accidents are some of the best teachers in art

That's it for now I think. :3

"Verbinde mit der ersten Ebene" war wohl zu simpel fΓΌr die Hersteller...?

Kann schon sein. Es gibt einfach keine passende und vernünftige deutsche Übersetzung für "Merge".

Do you have Photoshop?
Do you have a tablet? Like an Intuos?

AnOriginalZero In reply to MonoFlax [2017-08-24 08:07:37 +0000 UTC]

Yes, yes, and exactly that. I'm just trying to get as comfortable with it as I am with pencil and paper, I also tend to struggle when learning new techniques/styles since I'm mostly self taught.

Hehehe Thank you!
The setup wasn't about Photoshop not working anyways though. Apart from the fact that I couldn't change the language (apparently CC requires you to be logged in to creative cloud or something) it worked perfectly fine. I just downloaded some great brushes and set some intuitive hotkeys for the tablet.Β

Fuck off, this is what you create when you just want to calm down??

(Also yes, tranlating commands can be such a pain - especially if you use a program with german but want to apply tricks from english tutorials.)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

MonoFlax In reply to Zorbonaut [2017-08-20 06:52:00 +0000 UTC]

Oh, and you need a very low-opacity airbrush with max softness. Then you can experiment with brush modes and the likes. I suggest checking out "overlay", "hard light" and "color dodge". "Lighten" and "Darken" are also really useful. Basically "darken" only affects pixels that are lighter than the value you selected, so it only makes pixels darker. And with "lighten" its the other way around.

Zorbonaut In reply to MonoFlax [2017-08-20 09:39:48 +0000 UTC]

All sound like cool tricks; I'll try to see if can apply that anywhere, thank you!

MonoFlax In reply to Zorbonaut [2017-08-17 16:06:08 +0000 UTC]

Absolutely! In the beginning I just sort of indicated a light blue tone (or at least it looked blue on my friend's monitor), then a darker tone which almost always turns out to be some mountain shape, then some green horizontal strokes below it, etc. ect. the rest just sort of comes to be after that. The trees in the middle are concept art brushes sampled from tree photographs, so... I didn't paint those manually

any of it?Β
I don't think I could take myself outside and paint, too awkward XD But I mean I get a photo up to reference and I spend about half an hour looking at the picture, looking at the blank canvas (be it computer, or sometimes I feel brave and get the watercolours out XD), look at the screen, look at empty space, like, how do I draw that?! D: and then most importantly, how do I redraw it in a style that suits the rest of my work? XD

MonoFlax In reply to Xenosa [2017-09-07 08:01:13 +0000 UTC]

Hey, I've not painted traditionally yet either. Though I would love to try acrylic painting someday. Just so I could do exactly that: Step outside, and paint some scenery. I was talking about digital painting. Do you have Photoshop?
