Description
Name: Tyrant TeguBiological Name: Challengervenator megalosauroides ("Challenger's Megalosaurus like hunter")
Length: 3.5 meters (11 ft)
Height: 1.5 meters (5 ft, standing)
Habitat: bush-lands, forests, cloud forests, and rock "gardens"
Diet: large xenarthrans, small mammals, flightless birds, other reptiles (including smaller tyrant tegus)
Classification: Teiidae (tegus and caiman lizards)
Description: Thanks to the lack of competition against felids and canids, tegus have become the apex predators in this "lost world". Because of this, they have evolved a few adaptations in order to be top predators in the isolated ecosystem. One is their bone crushing bite rivaling that to a spotted hyena which can be pretty handy when taking down armored prey. Another is their strong forelimbs used for gripping onto prey as well as pushing other tegus away when fighting. But the most interesting adaptation is their strong back legs which British scientist George Challenger misidentified it as a megalosaurus. The back legs are strong enough to make the tegus rear on said limbs which can be used for tackling large prey, battling other enemies, intimidation, or just getting a better view. They can even walk on their back limbs which explains why Challenger misidentified it as an extinct animal, but the tegus mostly prefer to walk on all fours for better travel. How tyrant tegus hunt depends on the animal its going for. For large prey, they rear their hind limbs and rely on their arms to push them over, followed by their bone crushing bite to finish them off. For fast moving prey, they rely on ambush since they really aren't built for speed. Like their relatives, females abandon their young as soon as they lay their eggs which the young are capable of surviving on their own.
