Seven years of bad luck if you break a mirror, or so the superstition says. That's a long time to believe that you have bad luck, so let's find out the truth behind this one. Long before mirrors were invented, people used to see their reflections in pools of water. Since they had no scientific knowledge at the time, they believed this reflection to be their soul or their other self. And they believed that any interference with the other self would injure it. Hence when mirrors were invented, and they were broken, it was thought that the other self was harmed. And where did this seven year thing come in? Well, the Roman belief was that life renewed itself every seven years. And, since a mirror meant "broken" health, it was believed that the person who broke it would need seven years to recover.Note: Mirrors were harmed in the making of this photo

i have broken 3 mirrors and that is supposed to be 21 years of bad luck, and 8 years on i'm still wondering when the bad luck will start

This is Epic!! I still dont believe this superstition. However you Spell it XD! I broke a mirror with a Plastic Dice! XP I was Not Punished by my parents. Just got a "DONT DO IT AGAIN" face. and that was 2 years ago. my life has been the same as it always was

Very haunting photograph, this reminds me of old film-noir movies. I especially like the feeling here: even it doesn't have any apparent threating elements, the mood of horror and fear is reachable. Its interesting how small little details can be very effective.

I love how you've captured the 7 in the reflection, but wouldn't it seem more fitting to have it reversed. I say this because 7 is traditionally a good luck number, but whether it's good luck or bad luck, it's still superstitious.
That belief of renewal every 7 years is still in existence today.

Beautiful shot...It has a very dark surreal feel to it(for me).Goes well with the whole superstition series..If i may say so i think the dark shadow cast on the lower right side is somewhat distracting,not because its dark but because of the shape or size(I can't place it properly)...The mirror has come out amazing...A distorted reflection of a face or a silhouette would have been nice...What is your opinion?

I think it is Stephen King who wrote the book "Superstitions" which has tons of them in there even a poem as to what can occur if you sneeze on certain days of the week
