Description Man in the Moon, can I ask you some questions?
I'll take your answers, as merely suggestions.

These are the opening lines to a poem I wrote when I was 14. It seems like a lifetime ago but it helps to illustrate the importance of the moon in my life.

When I was little, my mother used to read to me a book entitled 'Goodnight Moon', and it remains, to this day, my favorite book. I'm an only child so I live in my own imagination and when I was lonely or confused I would sit in the window and have conversations with the man in the moon and as I got older I came to realize the effect the phases of the moon had over me. My emotional, physical and spiritual being was transformed with the waxing and waning of each cycle and when I started with the Craft it all came together.

I don't have the proper equipment to effectively capture the moon in a way that I would deem fitting for such an important factor in my life. As such I've opted to pay tribute with this piece.

Carl Sandburg once said 'The moon is a friend for the lonesome to talk to' and that effectively captures it for me and perhaps helps to explain my attraction, devotion and sometimes obsession with it.

So gentle...
It's an expressive shot...

awesome..

it reminds me my poems about the moon..

I think many of us are attracted by that pale and gentle mother, that brushes our head while we're crying in the night...

good work...

I like it a lot, and your description makes it even more interesting. I find the simplicity and the soothing shades beautiful.
I'm sorry to ask, but what exactly is it that you've taken a picture of?

I don't remember reading Goodnight Moon as a child, though my dad says I did. He actually bought it for me as a surprise gift recently. What I do remember reading is a book called Goodnight Owl. I love that book still.
This is a lovely tribute to the moon. realistic and abstract at the same time. I like how the moon shape seems to fit so perfectly into the window design. like it's a mirror or painting. the texture of the moon is also really interesting. looks so soft. I'm not sure how you did this one either, but it's a lovely picture. And I really like the opening lines of your poem. thanks for sharing it in the comments below. I was wondering what the rest of it was like myself.

Are you a wiccan? I used to practice them but became lazy after just a few tries. The moon confuses me. I don't know when it's waxing and I think the full moon is a new moon? Hmm... i have a problem there which makes me feel even more troubled when coming to cast some spells. I got so fed up so I gave up and moon magic.

Yes I am wiccan

You can tell if the moon is waxing based on whether the right side is light or dark.. and a new moon isn't a full moon.. it's actually the name for the time when there is no visible moon in the sky

Really outstanding composition! I, too, have a large affinity for the moon (although an even larger affinity for Dr. Seuss, hence the name). "Goodnight Moon" is also one of my favorite books, and being able to re-read it to my daughter really takes me back to when my mom used to read it to me. And when you said you used to sit in the window and talk to the moon, it gave me goosebumps, because I used to lie in bed and watch the moon rise in the night sky, talking to it while falling asleep. So secure, and so comforting. Thanks for doing the moon justice with this beautiful piece. Your work is truly great to view.

<-- for sure...

This reminds me of a song by Chriss Cornel, called 'Moonchild'. You should look for it. It describes this dev so perfectly. I think the poem of that song will suit this deviation perfectly. Anyways it's nice to have something like this in your room, it reminds of childhood memories and it's kinda warm.

This is a wonderful tribute! I like this so very very much... first of all, the photo is wonderful. It has such a vintage look and feel to it.. the textures and colors are so sensually stimulating.. i want to reach out and touch it with my fingertips. Really well done. I'm not sure what exactly this is a photo of though, i suspect it's a nightlight.. but to me it looks like an ornate window and the light shining directly in the moon part would come from the moon itself. That's what i first thought it was when i saw it.. does that make sense? Well, i think your words, as alway, just add so much weight to this and make the whole concept of resonate.

I may be somewhat biased though.. i absolutely adore the moon myself. Although i'm not an only child, my brother is much too old for us to be close... that combined with a lack of friends, i grew up talking to the moon too. I always adored her and never felt more energized than when there was a full moon. I remember the day i became so conscious of its effect on me.. i woke up in the middle of the night and my entire room was absolutely flooded with blue light.. i actually woke up because the moon was directly outside my window and it was so bright it woke me up. It was the most surreal experience and i remember just laying there.. feeling it all around me. Since then i've always arranged and re-arranged my room in such a way that my bed would get direct moonlight. At times it made it hard to sleep.. but that's when i would talk to her.

I think as females we definitely have a pretty interesting connection with the moon.. but it's more than just its cyclical nature.. there is something about it.. hard to put it in words. When i first began to delve into the Craft.. it began to explain a lot of things.. but i got out of it before i understood completely. But the connection will always remain.. i actually use the triple moon on all my pieces instead of the copyright symbol.. and i plan on getting something of the sort tattoed on my back.

ay.. sorry for having rambled on for so long .. this is just everything that you made me think of with this piece. There is just something so very familiar about that photo, i can't quite put my finger on it.. but it does bring up some interesting memories. You really do such thoughtful and wonderful work, danielle.. i like this very much. I absolutely adore how much of yourself you invest in these pieces.. it's quite admirable actually. With every piece of yours that i see.. feels like you open yourself more...that, in my opinion, takes courage. Takes courage to share yourself so willingly with audience like this.. and i so respect you for it. Again, fabulous work.. i'm so damn happy i get to enjoy what you do..

goodnight stars
goodnight air
goodnight noises everywhere...

... I've read it so much, I have half of it committed to memory... I don't know how many times that book made both my restless runnynosed son and his young college-bound dad yawn at the same time...

... your image is very provocative, very romantic... it's a topic with such universal appeal... I find myself staring at the moon at night and thinking, "so, I wonder how many other people are staring at it at the same time as me?"

oooooooook I promised so here it is:

Man in the Moon, can I ask you some questions?
I'll take your answers, as merely suggestions.

Why is it, there's love all around
for me though, it seems it can't be found?

Why is it, when I open my heart
It seems to be so easily ripped apart?

Why is it, when I try to do well
I feel as though I've been sent to hell?

Why is it, when I try to speak
It seems I am ignored, Am I weak?

Do you think I need to be brave,
perhaps I should come out of my cave?

Do you think I should stand tall,
and not be backed into the wall?

Man in the Moon, I know I asked a lot,
Thanks for your time, thought I'd give it a shot.

I feel a little better, just getting these written down
Perhaps tomorrow I can walk with a smile, in lieu of a frown.

Thanks for putting that up it is Lovely

You are a definately a deep thinker. Oh what a curse! huh? LOL... I think I can relate. Often I wish I was like Homer Simpson (ie lack of serious thoughts) here I am gone to ramble again but I saw a rerun of the Simpsons tonight and I laughed, a line stuck with me... Marge was going to become a real estate agent and she told Homer "I think I'll give it a try" and Homer responds, "I dunno Marge, trying is the first step towards failure." LOL I was gone to change my signiature to that but it would send the wrong message. but I just thought it funny and worth sharing. Oh well, what was I talking about? oh yeah deep thinking... well it's good after all What do you think?

'The moon is a friend for the lonesome to talk to' <-----yep, so true.

anyway, i'm not a practicing wicca or druid or geomancer or anything, but i have been an occultist for almost as long as i can remeber - and the moon kinda means something special to me on a deep spititual level too, tho its hard for me to put into words. i guess the only way i can explain it is that when the moon is in the sky i kinda feel like someone is watching over me, which i know sounds a little cheesy.

nice pic by the way - i'm not sure how you did it but i like the results!

- 1. great shot, do agreee with kev though the dark black is kind of entrapping to the eyes, but you do what you can to fix it and hope for the best, which you've done.
- 2. you beat me to the moon piece ppffffffftttt. shooting mine either tonight or tomorrow.
- 3. As for the comments this is where I would just go on and on, needless to say, you know how I feel and am in the same bout as you (only child, craft, etc.). So the commenst are perfect, all you needed was a bit of Raffi and we'd be rockin

Baby Beluga in the deep blue sea,
Swim so wild and you swim so free.
Heaven above, and the sea below,
And a little white whale on the go.

Baby beluga, baby Beluga, is the water warm?
Is your mama home with you, so happy.

Way down yonder where the dolphins play,
Where they dive and splash all day,
The waves roll in and the waves roll out,
See the water squirting out of your spout.

Baby beluga, baby Beluga, sing your little song,
Sing for all your friends, we like to hear you.

When it's dark, you're home and fed,
Curl up snug in your water bed.
Moon is shining and the stars are out,
Good night, little whale, goodnight.
