Here is the 78th page of my Explorer's Notebook for the Animal of the Month Event at : the Platypus!

I guess there is no need to introduce the really unique platypus, a mammal that lays egg, has fur, a duck's bill and a beaver's tail As you see, this cute and weird creature isn't very big and lives in a very small area of the world... until recently, they were thought to be numerous, but scientists say they might really be endangered, mostly because of the more and more devastating draughts and fires that touch Australia each year... There are organizations and programs in Australia to protect them, help them rebound, so if you can and want to help, just google "save the platypus"!

Like dolphins, they use electrolocation to locate their prey (worms, crayfish, insects...) and because they don't have teeth, they keep gravel in their cheeks to help them cut the hardest parts of their food. Their feet are very special, because they are webbed in water, but a platypus can retract the webbing when walking on land!! that's why you can see photos of it sometimes with webbed feet, sometimes with claws, sometimes both... They're territorial and not very social, a bit like bears, and only the mothers raise the babies until they can swim alone and feed themselves.
