Description For my fantasy and folklore class I chose the native american tale of The Wendigo. The story is such that an Indian warrior leavs his starving family in the heart of winter to go find food. While hunting he encounters The Wendigo, a shape shifter bent on eating him. A fight between the two ensues and the man is victorious...

Done in watercolor and ink.

I have a publishing company and we are making a book on Wendigo, written by an italian writer.
We would use your picture as cover of this book.

My only comment for the dude; "Run, random guy who appears to be a member of one of the Water Tribes in Avatar: The Last Airbender! Run!"

Also great pic! Wendigo is defiantly one of my fav cryptids!

The wendigo is supposed to be the embodiment of famine and starvation.

As the wendigo is often described as a spirit or a ghost, I really like the direction you took with this, as well as the fact that what little you can see of him is this giant gnashing mouth.

When I think of the Wendigo legend, that is the creature I imagine: an ethereal presence with a gaping maw moving through the mist. Very nicely done!

love it, sorry to say it was actually the starving people that turned into the Wendigo.. but amazing concept, reminds me of a story i heard a long time ago about a man who went hunting and his starving wife ate her own flesh until she was a skeleton then chased him, until he shot her and she fell into a pit; where she tries to claw her way out of til this day.
but i digress..
once again great job

It's how Marvel turned it in a classic Hulk comic, where he was into Quebec, and he was asked help to save some lost guys...

"And I saw him.. who.. was.. eating..."

The first original wendigo was once a Indian who resorted to cannibalism and ate his own eyes and mouth. He still wonders the earth as a evil spirit....

I wonder how the man was able to defeat that thing--for starters, it's a lot bigger than he is.

I kind of curious now what this 'Hidebehind" story your G-Grandfather told you is about. If you got the time, send me a synopsis!

RaptorFarmer In reply to mostlymade [2007-12-22 21:46:13 +0000 UTC]

He basicaly just said that the Hidebehind was a thing that was so fast that if you try to look at it it hides behind a tree or close behind your back so you cant see it.

I looked it up on Wikipedia. It didn't say much but it did say about the Wampus Cat my great grandfather used to talk about to scare my mom. But it said very little about the Hidebehind.

I wish I could tell you more, but all I know is that its practicaly invisible becouse all you feel is a sense that somethings always waching you.
